Can you use Cabots Benchtop clear on a painted Benchtop, Bunnings told me to use it, but reading the instructions on Tin I think they have got it wrong
I’ve used it for years as a top coat on doors where acrylic paint is used . I cannot comment on solvent based enamel paint as I don’t use them. Cabot’s protects the surface well from marking etc as it...

Read more There are a few variables that may come into account here. If the paint is acrylic, you will need to dull it down by sanding it with 300 grit, then vacuum away the dust, and wipe it down with diluted Sugar Soap. After this, you will need to wipe away the Sugar Soap residue and let it dry. Once dry, you can apply a test patch to test adhesion. If it passes an adhesion test, you are fine to coat. If the paint is oil-based, you will not be able to coat over it with Cabot’s Benchtop Clear. To test adhesion, Apply one coat to a small test area. Allow to dry for 8 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating comes off, repeat the prep process. Can you oil your benchtop with a tung timber oil before applying the Cabot's benchtop clear ?
Hello Kelly S,

Read more Unfortunately, the two products you have listed are not compatible, they are also very different products. Tung Oil is a penetrative product that seeps into the timber and creates an oil based protective natural finish. Our Benchtop Clear, on the other hand, is a clear water-based polyurethane which sits of the surface and creates a barrier to protect your timber, not just from water but also from chemical cleaners and hot mugs. Read more It is tricky to assess over this platform, but there are a few variables that could cause this issue. The most common are humidity and high temperatures. The ideal conditions for coating are 25 degrees and 50% humidity. If you are currently experiencing weather outside of this range, you need to expect it to take longer than the expected 14 days curing time. I have used this product on a number of chairs however this time it turns a milky white colour when I touched it and it does not go away. I thought it might still have too high moisture levels as the humidity is currently high so thought it might need some extra drying time but it still won't go away. I though I might try a hair dryer to see if that would help dry it out but iy turned the whole thing white immediately, not just my hand prints.
Any ideas?

9 days ago we redid our bench top with Benchtopclear do we have to wait 28 days before we can use them In the past we normally put down a piece of linoleum when we work on the bench top just to save the wood from scratches we have just redone them after 12 years So my question is do we have to wait 28days ?? Thanks in advance Alan
Yep although it dries in an hour or so - it takes 28 days to completely develop an impervious layer. I covered mine with a layer of plastic.

So far im liking the finish (Satin) and have 1 more coat left to do. Goes down well, sands to a nice finish between coats, does not darken the natural timber and very low odor compared to other Poly based coats.
My question is:
What can i place over the benchtop once its last coat is dry and while its in its curing stage (14days) as im guessing for most users of this product, not using the kitchen for this period of time is unworkable/impossible, so it would be good to place something (Towel/plastic sheeting etc?) while we continue to live/cook in the kitchen during its cure phase. Your recommendations please.?
Yes its a nice finish BUT the curing time is 28 days in small writing on the tin. The Benchtop dries very quickly but does not form an impervious barrier for 4 weeks. I put an impervious plastic shee...
Read moret over the kitchen bench for the whole time; otherwise oils etc will penetrate the benchtop and sink into the timber with disterous results (I missed out the curing time the first time I did this and had to resand the benchtop but couldnt remove all oil stains.Hello Jpak,

We do not recommend covering the benchtop while waiting for it to dry, as the solvents need to evaporate and it will affect the drying process if they are not allowed to do so correctly. Hi, I’ve been reading the reviews on this site and there are quite a few references to a 28 day period for the product to fully cure.
I’ve searched the Cabots web site for this product but can not find any reference to this - just the “recoat after 2 hours” instruction.
Can someone point me at a comprehensive set of instructions?

I have seen the cabots benchtop which wasn’t around I think when I first did the benchtop. The benchtop is totally sanded back so looking for its coating - so tossing up options I have two questions - will I get the life out of the benchtop product as I did with the previous floor product? How good safe is the floor product on benches?

I have applied 6 coats of cabothane water based clear but the surface is not rock hard which is what I would like to achieve so would like to add an extra coat or two of an oil based clear gloss with extra hardness. Would this work? The timber benchtop is camphorlaurel.

Hi. I have found the information here most helpful - particularly relating to the need for a period of cure time, as well as the caution not to “over work” the product once applied. Can you please advise the best type of roller cover (foam, short-nap, etc) to use to maximize product cover thickness and minimize uneven coverage and roller lines?

How well does benchtop clear fair on very old floorboards (more so as a top sealant than a beautifying finish). As the intention is to redo floors completely eventually, but not yet. In some areas the old finish is completely gone. With small (grubby) children I'm finding it excessively difficult to keep floors clean and someday salvageable where there is no old finish.
I understand it wouldn't be recommended as a floor finish but I have leftover product from doing benches some time ago (they are fairing very well). I have prepped and bond tested a small area and it's stuck on to the raw timber and old finish beautifully.

Hi Cabot's staff member,
Can I ask a few questions regarding the use of Cabot's benchtop Clear Water-based?
Can I used it on benchtop covered by water-based enamel paint?
If it can be used like that, will water drops penetrate through the coat if water drips are accidentally left on the benchtop overnight? By reading the other reviews they said there were water-resistance issues but I am not sure to what extent the water can damage the surface coat.
Thanks,
