Our travel agent has just booked us with this airline for a trip from Australia to Europe next year. After reading these reviews I am dreading the flights. Has Cathay Pacific got any redeeming features?
We are traveling premium economy but by these reviews the manners of the staff are anything but premium.
We are still to lock in our flights so should we be considering another airline?
Kind of looking forward to replies!
Cheers Rosie

Hi Rosie. I flew Cathay Pacific (Economy Class) Melb to Barcelona a few months ago, not having flown with them before.
While there was nothing particularly wrong with the service I have to say cabin staff did not seem to go out of their way as much as other airlines I've flown. Staff were polite enough, but I was only ever offered one drink and then meals were served. Once meals had been eaten and cleared away I have to say that cabin staff were very scarce.
I'd hope your experience in Premium Economy might be a little better.
As I said, nothing particularly bad about them, but for the price I paid for my flight I would probably hesitate to fly with them again in future.

Thank you Kayne for this info. Our agent is looking at other airlines for us now so we will see what comes of that.

We flew Perth to Vancouver and new York to Perth with Cathay in Premium Economy. No real complaints to whinge about. Found the seats comfortable, enough for me to sleep several hours in. Very safe airline ro fly with but I must concur with Kaybee. Staff were no existent for most of the time. We have flown before to Europe with them but are looking for another airline for next year to Europe as we believe service can be better on alternative airlines.

Hi, I will be travelling from Melbourne to New Delhi via Cathay Pacific and the connection time between Hongkong to Delhi is 13Hr, I just want to confirm few things:
Can I go out in that time period and roam in Hongkong in a day?
Being travelling on Indian Passport, do I need to apply a visa in advance or I can get it on arrival? because it's transit?
However my final destination will be New Delhi and layover in Hongkong will be for 13 Hr or so, where will i get my luggage? directly in New Delhi or should I have do it all over again in Hongkong?
Please guide, I shall be obliged.
Thank you, Kind Regards

Hi Deepti I went to HongKong last year on an Indian passport, you will get visa on arrival but still have to apply for Pre-Arrival registration form online from their website which costs around 25$ or something not sure of the exact price now. You also need to carry the final hard copy of this form at the airport as they might not accept the soft copy if you just show it on your phone

Yes, from what I saw most people had those items. Take an eye shade though and a set of ear plugs.

Yes, although the blanket is wafer thin. Make sure you are layered up if you feel the cold on a flight.

Our Japan trip was our first time with Cathay but in general conversations with people yes, you get off the plane. Leg room definitely depends on the actual plane

Yes - you will get off and board a connecting flight - no direct flights to London as far as I know.

I flew both economy and business long haul, mostly SYD<->HKG, HKG<->London and HKG<->US,
at the economy class level, they are at par, with Qantas, and the ME3, but slightly worse than SQ.
at the business class level, if the flights departs from HKG, the food is really good (score 10), however slightly worse if it is from AUS (score 8), getting worse if it is from USA (score 7), worst if it is done by a UK kitchen (score 5).

As I've travelled over 30 times internationally, here's the best tip, unless your Business or 1st the food is just ok. The Tip and I've done this for years, Take your big travel mug, take instant soup, instant laksa, a bread roll, fruits and a few nut bars. I also take Tea Bags and those cute instant coffee things Latte/expresso etc. The staff have no problem with you brining things that make you happy.
But I did have the greatest Beef and Blackbean sauce on a China Southern Flight a year or so back. David Adelaide

the food on CX Premium was marginally better then economy. It was served from the same trolley and and at the same time. The only difference was that in the sandwich, PE had Salmon and E had ham!!!!!!!
not worth the money - don't do it go Economy or Business depending on your budget

Adelaide to HongKong direct. Any comments on economy and premium economy before we make a decision would be appreciated

depends on how much you pay, if the PE fare is 130% or less of the Y fare, then it is worthwhile to fly PEY...note Cathay ATM is having huge discounts from time to time, using SYD<->HKG economy as an example, normal fare is about 1,000 . during special can be 700.

We are flying Sydney to Hong Kong 2nd May we have never flown this airline before. We have decided to upgrade to premium economy as night flight. We usually fly Business but seems a very expensive trip just to HK. Wonder if worth it?

Cathay Pacific uses two model in regards to the seating layout.

Model 1. If you are flying to HKK direct or from HKK direct to Australia= You will get normal seating arrangements being comfy as this is not catered for the Asian market and you get the same leg room that you get from a semi decent airline.

Model 2. If you are connecting flight from HKK to another Asian destination, the seats are designed for the Asian market and are very small, the premium economy is a rip off as you are paying for the same type of seat structure as a normal Qantas Seat. This is where they make money in fooling everyone. The economy seats are like AIRASIA. The seats don't recline and only the bottom platform where you buttock is on slides outwards probably 15cm and yet doesn't provide comfort.

Thank you, thought this maybe the case, and yes we are connecting on to Shanghai. Never flown this airline ever so really know nothing about Cathay Pacific. Too late now. Huge price difference, huge mistake by sounds of it haha

If you are flying on their 777s the seats are actually very wide, as they use the 3-3-3 layout for the 777 economy section,

I do not agree with Em Perez because their seats are not narrow at all, nothing like airasia ! in terms of economy legroom they are better than other airlines, only slightly smaller than Singapore airlines. He might be referring the connection via Dragon air on the A320, in that case yes the seats will be very small. But if it is on CX 777 plane the seats will be good.

for their premium economy I believe the seat is the same as normal economy, only more legroom.

you can always create more legroom by removing stuff from the seat pocket and place them in the overhead bins, that will gain you 1-2 inches easily.

they have four flights from Sydney to hong kong daily, and Qantas only have one most days of the week and they have downgraded it to a smaller 747, rather than the A380, guess who is doing better on the route ?

No eye masks, no toothbrush. They give you nothing and blankets are paper thin. Suggest if you get cold easily or are near the exit wrap up.
