This could be due to a number of reasons. If the external switch is stuck but the reel still winds (forward and backward) then it is either stuck in that mode due to corrosion or being jammed with mud, dirt or fine sand. You may not be able to see this as it could be in the hole in the reel body though which the mechanism passes. 1. Do not try to force the switch as it may break. 2. With the reel on a flat surface and on an old cloth, try some silicone spray or similar to flush out any material and/or loosen any corrosion. If that doesn't work, then either a. the mechanism has simply fallen off inside for some reason or b. the mechanism inside has broken off or c. the mechanism is corroded inside. In any case, you would need to open the reel to investigate. Again, use a flat surface and on an old cloth. Lubricate the cover screws before undoing and be very careful to not drop any screws. When servicing a reel I always ensure that the floor is a surface I can see a dropped screw on in case I do drop one. Never do this outdoors on sand, dirt, grass etc. If the parts are corroded just persist with the spray and allow time to penetrate. Sometimes corroded parts are loosened only by the slightest movement first, then gradually more and more until full movement is achieved. If your spray does not work, wipe dry and try another type of lubricant. If you cannot budge it or you find that its broken inside, you'll just have to buy a new part. Good luck.
