FIIO FA7 doesn't have the audiophile sound but is pretty sweet
Headphone is a very crowded, saturated space. There are tons of manufacturers. To make it even more complicated, most offer lots of models. To begin with there are heaps of headphone types - circumaural that that large and cover the whole ear, superaural that sit on the ears, ear buds, earphones and IEMs - in-ear monitors, TWS - true wireless stereo - battery operated earphones that doesn't have any cord, not even a bluetooth cable that hangs around your neck. That's not all, there are now wearable speakers like the Bose sound wear companion sp...
Read moreeakers. OMG! If you look into any particular type of headphones, there are loads of tech and things to look at, sound quality isn't everything and you can pay through the roof for just a few grams of these goodies - way more expensive than gold / platinum. The only thing more expensive than premium IEMs is diamond! Explains why so many are into it. And to justify the investment, you can order your very own custom made earphones made specifically for you, for your less than standard, asymmetrical and a little bit crooked, unique ear canal and specific music taste. Knowles BA Thanks to Knowles who is well known for their balance armatures used for hearing aids and later for musicians. Their drivers are reputable and are sold at volume. So many new companies or new entrant have come about because of them. Putting a few of these Knowles together with a crossover and there you have it, an IEM product! There are websites that talk about how you can make your own. If electronics stores are as popular as they used to be, I am sure you can just get an IEM case and pick up these Knowles BAs by part number and make your own. Some already come in pairs or quads and have crossover already built-in! One of the reasons I bought these FIIO FA7 is my curiosity about BA vs old dynamic driver (DD) technology. BA is supposed to provide more details but BA can't produce wide frequency range like DD can. DD can produce the full frequency range and unmatched coherence as a result. That's why a lot of top of the range models are hybrid consisting of both BA and DD. Some manufacturers opt for large number of BA drivers (up to 8) and as many as 4 crossovers. This is fascinating because anyone into speaker design knows the complexity of crossover and criticality of matching. Do they actually produce better sound? Logic tells me, No! FIIO FA1 for example has only one single BA driver has good coherence! Construction
