Good value for a work horse
Firstly, let me qualify this by stating I am a mechanic with 40 years experience and also a trainer in the heavy vehicle field. I purchased a 4x4 cab chassis to be used as a farm vehicle. Now down to the nitty gritty of this 4wd. Like most I had reservations about a chinese made vehicle and how good it would be. I did a lot of research on the company and the vehicle before I decided to take one for a test drive. I compared it to a Mazda BT 50, and Holden Colorado, both of which I drove the same day.
The interior finish of the Foton is ver...Read more
y good, and on par if not better than some of the more expensive 4wd Utes. It has bluetooth connectivity, cruise control and a basic trip computer. The seats are extremely comfortable and there is plenty of leg room inside. What I like is that you can buy it with a floor mat and not carpet. I mean seriously, who wants a carpet in a work ute? Being a cab chassis with an Australian made aluminium tray (the same tray as the Toyota and Mazda) I expected the rear end to be a bit stiffer to handle the 1 tonne carrying capacity, and suprisingly it wasnt anywhere near as rigid as my old Navara. The engine, transmissions and driveline are powerful as you would expect from a Cummins engine and Getrag gearbox. I have carried a 1 tonne load up the 10km incline on the freeway from Adelaide and it handled it with out a problem. The downside is the 2 1/2 tonne towing capacity compared to 3 1/2 ton from competitors. Of course it hasnt been all roses and I have had a warrantee issue with the steel rims. There was a serious vibration above 80 kph but replacing the rims rectified this. I also has someone side swipe me and getting panels was a bit of a problem. With no manufacturers in Australia from October 17 we will have to get used to this. To sum it all up, the Foton Tunland is a great ute for the price. Sure you might get a few items need fixing but most of the issues I have seen are minor and the frustration comes from the dealers, not the vehicle. Just remember this is half the price of a Toyota, Ford, Mazda or Holden. They are worth a look in. Also remember, people were sceptical about Hyundai when they first entered the Aussie market too. In a nutshell, I love my Tunny!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Great 4wd for the price
it has american running gear, cummins motor, borg warner transfer case, dana diffs, has a german gear box, and bosch electrics. also found out by comparing it with workmates toyota 2005-06 hilux that the cabs are identical. Comes also with leather seats and steering wheel, tub liner, running boards and mag wheels.have had it for nearly 2years 20000 plus k's and cannot really fault it. has had some cosmetic warranties and replaced brake linings ( too hard, they were squealing) but dealer gave no hassles just had to wait for some panels to come f...Read more
rom china. when changing to 4wd have to hold button in for about 20 plus seconds and works perfectly. Even services are reasonably priced (but have found out the can vary from dealer to dealer, my local dealer Pittard Motors Bunbury do a good deal) gives good fuel economy around 7-7.5 per 100 k's, otherwise am happy with what l bought.Similar opinion? too many things failed
Drove ok... a bit loud
Good economy
Towing was ho hum... Wouldn't go towing over 1500kgs even with elec brakes
Cheap... and cheap build quality
Parts hard to source
Issues with tyre sensors
Too many dramas - Turbo hose, seats, windscreen wipers, wiring loom... all in under 30000kms.
Please consider an alternative discount ute.
