12 years of ownership
Bought my Astra AH new 12 years ago. Just done 100,000km, so relatively low mileage. Apart from replacing usuals such as tyres, brakes etc, the only unusual one was to replace the air-con unit with a recon from 'Natrad', (they have them on the shelf), and recently replaced the coil pack (after market is cheap $55) which was a very simple DIY job. I have had a couple of sensors replaced, but considering the age, and German electrics/electronics is not unusual. The 1.8 petrol engine & manual gearbox will go on forever, just keep them serviced...Read more
, replace the cam belt every 60k and you have a solid & safe workhorse. They are a well-built car, feels safe, and the doors shut with a solid clunk. Headlight lenses are acrylic and will become opaque overtime if left in the sun. One lens is clear the other opaque. Most parts are now 'after market' and cheap anyway so only go to Holden as a last resort.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Comfy, Powerfull and Good Looking
I have a black SRi and it looks good (only when washed, else its full of Sydney dust and damn do astras make alot of brake dust!!), drives well - bucket loads of power, handling is awesome with the sporty leather seats and with the Michelin tyres it stuck to the road pretty well.
I bought the car in July 2014 with 50k on the clock, issues (if I may call it that) as follows:
55k - power steering malfunctioned - fixed under dealer warranty and they replaced the steering rack as well
70k - spark plugs ($40 each for Originals x 4 - meant to l...Read more

Holden Astra Sucks
After 13 fixes $41,000 later the judge says no money just 1 more fix
Watever big business sux
So 6 years later I'm supposed to be patient for one more time so the judge can say you've had the cat for 7 years you've used it right?
No I've had Anxiety each time i opened the roof.
June 6th 2018 Update: Holden Astra was so bad it hit discontinued... not only that some parts you cannot get
If you want to spend 45K then sob for the following years... deal with holden! I regretted having ever dealt with them and the last straw was to find out some parts have been totally discontinued.... joke
The times I was left by the way side - rained on ... how infuriating.

Reliable, but bad paint work
I own a 2006 Astra CDX, bought it new. It was silver, now patchy silver. Very disappointed with the paintwork on it, because it's a great, solid, mechanically sound car, but was worth nothing because of the paint when I tried to trade it in a couple of years ago (decided to keep it).
Also, a few days after the warranty ran out, the compressor for the air conditioner blew up, costing me $500 to replace it. The dealer I bought it from said I could 'try' applying for goodwill from Holden, but 'good luck with that'.
Besides that and the pain...Read more
t, it's been a good, reliable car. It's got 100K on the clock and the only money I've had to spend on it was the timing belt and new brakes, not unusual or unexpected in a car of its age. I chose this car over a VW Polo TDi, due to the solid feel of the car. You do feel safe in it.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
excellent build quality and reliability
I owned my ah astra cd coupe for four years.apart from servicing and replacing front brake pads nothing else needed doing. It had 110000 on the clock when I bought it and 175000 when I sold it.It was a pleasure to drive being a 5 speed manual was fun and zippy couldn't really fault this car I've owned 8 previous cars and this was by far the best!

Dont buy one and if you have one sell it now
Bought a second hand 2005 AH Astra auto for my daughter.
First the horn wasnt working - turned out to be the CIM module. At the same time the auto gears were not changing properly. Luckily these both got fixed under the dealer warranty.
A year later the gearbox had issues and would not change above 2nd. Caused by the transmission fluid being diluted by coolant as the design is such that gearbox coolant flows through the radiator and any failure causes this catastrophic result. End result the clutches etc in the gearbox were ruined and neede...Read more
d a complete rebuild. Say goodbye to over 4 grand. That was 2 weeks ago. Now tonight the motor has developed a horrible misfire and has complete loss of power. I'm hoping its just the coil pack but who knows - could be a complete engine rebuild knowing my luck. If you have one of these bucket of bolts get rid of it before it sends you broke.Similar opinion? Who says European cars are unreliable?
I bought my Astra CD as a used car and owned it for 2 years and 8 months. I really like that car because the way it handles, the practicality with the fold-able backseats and that is one of Holden's best known models. What made me choose this model over other makes and models? Well, it's pretty difficult to keep it simple. It's a good honest European built model, it isn't too expensive compared with other European small cars (mine has, 4 airbags, ABS brakes, cruise control, alloy wheels). So far, my Astra has be very reliable, servicing costs a...Read more
re reasonable and better still, Holden manufacture spare parts for Astras and as far as fuel goes, I use 95 PULP and it costs around $57 to fill up and fuel consumption i've managed to get 7.2L/100 km (compared to 7.8L/100 km on normal unleaded). I had no issues whatsoever and I shall keep it until it gets worn down.2 comments
UPDATE: I have clocked over 200,000 kilometres without any problems. The battery needed replacing as it was 5 years old. And I have decided to get ambitious and see if I could aim to clock 400,000 kilometres.
Another thing. I've managed to get 6.7L per 100 km lately with my car. Still running on the 95 PULP. Maintain them and they could still be good for many years to come.

2005 Holden Astra AH CD - excellent car
I bought my Astra hatch almost 3 years ago at a Brisbane dealership when it had just under 25,000kms on the clock. I needed something small-ish that was comfortable and economic. After test driving both the Mazda 3 and the Astra hatch I much preferred the Astra - it was far more comfortable to drive. It's been a fantastic car. I moved interstate to Canberra about a week after I bought it and was pleasantly surprised by how well it handled the long drive - since then it's frequently driven back and forth to Sydney and has always gone well. 2009 Astra 1.9CDTI Manual
It's not helpful that ieatwords lumps all the models together. I think the diesel, especially the manual, is a much different car to the petrols.
I bought my car second hand at 18 months old with 13000km, for two-thids of the new price (not including on-road costs, which would have pushed the new price higher). It's about to have its 120,000km service. Timing belt still not needed.

n when you open the door, and even though it was still under Warranty Holden were unable to fix it. It's surprisingly annoying! SRI Turbo is a great car, vey fun to drive
I bought a 2007 model manual Astra Coupe Turbo with 60000kms on it, have had it for 3 years now and it's up to 78000kms.
This turbo model is a lot of fun and great to drive. It's better that you select 'Sports' mode when you drive it as that improves its handling immensely. In normal mode it can understeer a bit and especially in the wet.
The interior has a nice fit and feel to it and the car outside and in still looks great 7 years later.

Solid and good looking. Mechanically soul destroying.
The Astra was such a love/hate car for our family. The love comes from the fact that all of the Astra’s are good to drive. They feel solid, hold the road well, have aged well so still look good and, most of all, have that definite European feel about them. The fact that Holden switched it out for something as dull and generic as the Cruze will, for them at least, go down in history as a fatal mistake.
With this in mind it pains me to admit that we have never been happier than the day we walked into a dealership (not a Holden dealership) and ...Read more
parted company with this vehicle. From start to finish it was an absolute nightmare. To be fair, the problems experienced were largely attributable to the fact that we bought the diesel car. It was the first diesel we owned and the performance of the manual car (the auto has a lower spec motor) was downright impressive. Whilst first impressions were heavenly, the AH diesel Astra is an absolute lemon. The engine is actually a Fiat motor. It pops up in numerous Fiat, Opel (Holden), Saab and Alfa Romeo vehicles. And. Everything they say about Italian cars being unreliable to the point of absurdity is quantified by this engine. We bought our bright red Astra with 5000 kilometres on the clock (2008 model) and sold it with just over 85000km on the dial. We have never parted with a vehicle with such low mileage but it was pretty clear to us that holding onto it for any longer would be a fatal mistake financially. Without the factory warranty the bills this vehicle could serve up were nothing short of staggering. The first major issue was at 20,000kms. A complete failure of the dual mass flywheel in the vehicle. The car was off the road for three weeks whilst Holden messed around trying to diagnose the fault and then tried to avoid paying for it (approximately $4000.00). Apparently the “first time” the problem had occurred but when Google actually auto-fills a car complaint when you search it then it generally means that the problem is a big one. A global one.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Fuel efficient, but has its issues
I have a 2004 automatic astra city . I have had it just over a year and all it has done is cause me trouble, I bought it with 107,187km on the clock. My timing belt went 2 weeks after. at 115,000 my transmission started to play up, it took me a whole light set to get through one set of lights and I was the first car, I took it to get scanned and nothing turned up. It has since cost me over $1000 to get the transmission replaced because it kept doing it. At 123,000 my speedo dropped out and didn't want to work when doing 100km down the freeway....Read more
I have my car serviced every 7000km and now it seems to be a problem with my cv joint. I am a careful driver and would recommend if buying 2nd hand get at least 2 mechanics to check the car out before buying. Fantastic little car
We have had our AH ASTRA CDXi since brand new in 2005 when we purchased it in August.
This has been a very reliable little car and apart from the cam belt changes and water pump that is done at the same time servicing is quite the norm as with any car, brakes do wear a little quicker but we are not too easy on our brakes anyway.
Battery has been replaced once, air con re-gassed and I have upgraded the standard 16inch wheels to Factory 18 inch Astra SRI Turbo wheels that feel nice and solid with the wider tyres.

good considering it is now on 198,000km, idles beautifully still and air con is still icy cold. Paint finish on these cars is typical of a European made car, thick paint and top quality clear coat, still turns heads as it is the rare breeze blue colour that looks so nice on a sunny day.Similar opinion? Good for a first car
This is my first car and have found it very reliable. Purchased second hand at 60,000k. Easy to maintain/service, although at around 100,000km the timing belt needs replacing and this can be pricey- so be wary if purchasing one around 90,000k. Cruise control is a breeze, very good on petrol, handles well. Not sure about other models but my car has full airbags including curtain airbags.
If you are outside the car and hold the unlock button down all the windows go down/ go up when you hold down lock. Cool trick and can close the windows once you've left the car.
Only one cupholder, no console/elbow rest.

Still not sure...
I bought my 2006 Holden Astra CDTI second hand only ever owned by one other owner as my first car.
The first 5 months of having the car were fantastic. It did everything I needed it to do and more. The reverse sensors were super handy, the fog lights were great and the Diesel engine was a dream.
It wasn't long until my little Astra took a massive turn down hill. I was driving on the highway when all of a sudden my battery warning light came on. As this was my first car I had no idea what this meant but did the right thing and tried to pu...Read more
ll over. It was only 2 minutes when all of a sudden all the power to my car cut out. My breaks were no longer working as apparently this happens with the diesels and my steering locked up. If it wasn't for my car being a manual I would have driven straight into on coming traffic. When I managed to get my car to the mechanics I was told my alternator had busted. Luckily it was covered in the warranty. After the repair my lights started blowing and would cut out randomly in second gear. My radio also cut out and it was as if my car was losing power almost instantly for only seconds. 3 months later I took a trip to New Castle (8 hours away) and half way there my car started making really weird ticking like noises. I got the NRMA out as soon as I arrived and they told me it was again the alternator. I wasn't going to make it home and instead spent my holiday carless. My lights are still blowing but everything else is healthy. I'm now just waiting for the 4th alternator to make its appearance. My mechanic has been so great and super reliable and has told me to get rid of the car ASAP as all Holden CDTI Astras have this major issue. Please don't buy the diesel Astra. Size, look, reverse sensor, great fuel economy, 6 speed manual transmission, sports mode, drives really really well Alternator, expensive to fix if not in warranty, blowing lights, always on edge about the alternatorSimilar opinion? We like it ...
We really like our Astra Twin Top. It had a few issues when it was brand new such as having to have the fuel pump replaced 3 times. This issue ended up being an issue that they recalled all the Twin Tops to fix. But now that is all sorted its a great car. It looks great and drives really well.

the roof takes a fair while to go up and down.

Great car! I wish i did more research though.
I recently bought a 2006 Astra AH with an optional extras pack including 15" alloys, power windows for all doors, reverse parking sensors and cruise control.
Excellent car, looks good, drives really well and is reasonably fuel efficient with low maintenance costs.
In terms of power, it is a little sluggish when over taking but you can get around that by pressing the "Sport" mode button on the dash which allows you to rev higher through the gears and sharpens throttle response.

er purchasing it and doing more research I found out that the 2007 models and after were built with a Z18XER engine putting out around 103 KW as opposed to the Z18XE in 2006 and earlier models which only puts out 90 KW. The later model engine also gets 7.8 L P/100 KM where as the earlier engine gets 8.2 L P/100 KM average. Bottom line is if you had the opportunity to get the later model engine do it! but other wise it isn't a huge sacrifice as the earlier models are still a great car and you may be able to get them cheaper and with added extras like I did. Looks Great, Reliable, Low running cost's, decent efficiency models before 2007 are built with a less powerful and less efficient engineSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
