Part problems
I have a loved twin top that had cost me a small fortune with engine chain mounts falling off, roof needing repair etc. have just had cable in door handle snap and am told No Parts are available in Australia for this car??? Holden service excellence? I also checked for recalls as the Holden dealership failed to check. Found 3 outstanding including a brake hose. I booked car back in to have recalls done and was told the car would have to remain off road for up to three months while they sourced parts from Europe but could not guarantee they coul...Read more
d get any?? Sadly I will be buying anything but another one of these as I want a car that can be mended for more than 3 years. The best car I have owned
This is the best car I've owned by far. We bought it brand new in 2005 and it has served us well doing 160,000 km. It is very easy on fuel compared to my son's Mazda 3. He probably has thrashed that though. It has very thick doors compared to our japanese cars and has 6 airbags traction control, abs and many other more safety features that our japanese cars did not have. I have the Automatic which probably needs another gear on the freeway but nothing I can't live with. I bought this for my daughter new but she was given a company car straight a...Read more
fter Uni. I loved it so much we kept it and sold my car. It has given me no problems at all. It feels rock solid on the road, like a large saloon and I love the brakes on this car. It is very easy to clean the interior compared with other cars because of the fabric used . It only needs a service once a year compared with every six months like a mazda or toyota of similar vintage so I use my expensive oil filters and spark plugs. Accessories and parts are very cheap if you buy these from the UK or other EU websites. I bought the official vauxhall roof racks and boot protector. I also bought a replacement heated electric mirror I ripped off reversing up my narrow driveway for $80 from ebay.co.uk. I think the paint is much better than our japanese cars because our other car is parked in a similar place and is subject to bird dropping damage but the Astra's paint looks brand new . It still looks modern compared with some similarly aged cars. The polycarbonate headlight lenses have gone hazy and yellow. Fuel efficiency only 12 monthly service intervals not 6 months the polycarbonate headlight lenses went yellow and needed to be cleaned

Finally got my dream car!
Purchased the '09 model secondhand in 2011 & couldn't be happier, from the price to the color - just perfect. Drives beautifully & is good on fuel. I can still fit my suitcase in the boot even with the top down & when the top is up the boot is bigger than many sedans. Glad I waited for the hardtop just because I feel more secure in it.
Leather seats that hug you, heated seats, rear park assist, how quick & easy it is for the hardtop to open & close, awesome stereo.
Not enough cup holders.

Pleasantly surprised ! Best twin top in its class.
Bought a very nice condition MY2007 this year (2012) as I wanted to have a convertible and I am over my 4x4 phase :)
Didn't really know what to buy to fit my budget (< 20k), so I tested the Renault Megane twin top, the volvo 93, fold focus. Also drove a Astra soft top as comparison.
The AH twin top beats all of those hands down. By far the best engine - the 2.2L is just so much fun to drive, especially in sports mode. Best features - computers everywhere, everything electric, leather, heated seats, park assist - all stuff which is usually f...Read more
ound in more expensive cars. Handeling is sensational - 6 gear manual gearbox a blast. And then of course the top, which is nothing short of sensational ! And the styling is a sure head-turner. Cant share the criticism of some others - at least not yet anyways. Everything works flawlessly, including the opening / closing of the roof. No leaks, squeeks etc. Things I would like to see improved: Add electric seats /w memory. More storage and cup holders. Probably a bit more horsepower. All in all a very very nice car. I am pleasantly surprise how much I love it beyond the twin top (which was the main reason why I bought it.).Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

7 years old, One lady owner since new, its been trashed and bashed and still looks like new. Rarely serviced but never missed a beat, rear ended twice, first time sitting at traffic lights, 4 wheel drive slams into the back of me, I get out and see its lost its bumper and one light,,,, my car,no damage but a crumpled number plate, its like it springs back into shape. I Will keep this car for a long time, as its pretty has held its value and a potential classic.
after seven years and 140000km nothing has broken or worn in the interior and it has never broken down.

2009 Holden Astra Hatch
I've always had my car serviced by Holden, they're overpriced but didn't want to void the warranty. 2 services prior to new car warranty expiry I noticed the coolant warning come up occasionally on the computer dashboard so had Holden check it out twice and both times they said it was fine. As soon as it was out of warranty and I took it for it's next service they said the sensor is faulty and will cost me to replace it!
I refused saying I had brought it to their attention twice while it was under warranty but they said it didn't show up a...Read more
s faulty when they conducted the tests under warranty. Still refused to pay for it so now I have to put up with a faulty sensor. About 3 months after that service my car was running quite rough and the engine light was staying on so took it back yet again and was charged $400 so they could tell me they couldn't find anything wrong with it and the engine light isn't staying on anymore! Ran okay for a couple of months after that until 19th Jan when the same thing happened again; it was running so rough at one point I struggled to get my car up to 60kmh and now that engine light is back on. Had other minor cosmetic issues also. Stay away from Holden. Seat warmers Engine and electricals. No centre console. Lack of cupholders. Cosmetic faults.Similar opinion? Terrible car
My wife brought her 2007 Sri brand new. My wife is a conservative driver never crashed, i often get mad while driving with her because she is like a grandma. To begin this car goes through a new set of front tyres every year which is crazy. Even if you get them alligned, balanced and get decent tyres they still wear unbeliveably fast.
The car was regularly serviced but not at holden dealership. At 23000 kms a gasket leaked and pumped water into transmission. We took back to Holden an they said it is because we didn't get it serviced by them,...Read more

One of the best cars I've owned
I have the 2005 AH wagon and 2008 60th Anniversary Wagon. Both automatics.
Both a reliable, zippy and plenty of room with the wagon.
All I have had done is the battery at 60,000kms, timing belt on the 2005 at 100,000kms. Yes, you only need to do this at 100,000kms. It's the same engine as in the UK and their handbook states 100,000. That was $800. I have never had a problem with the electrics.
I buy my air and pollen filters online from the UK and save heaps. I've even bought the sparkies from there.
I'm looking to upgrade the 200...Read more

Small car that drives like a big car
Bought the 2004 AH Astra CD new and have done 145,000km now and still going well, It replaced the big Falcons we had previously and gave fantastic fuel consumption and great on road feel, it drove on the highways like a big car. It has a good quality finish and feels like a European car inside.
It has towed a Camping trailer all over Eastern Australia. Towed trailer loads of sand, sheep and hay brilliant. It travelled 25k a year for the first few while still taking kids around to sport. Have serviced it at Holden’s the whole time (15k s...Read more

Great Allrounder
I have had the Astra for about 4 years now, it has been a great all round car for the family, surfboards, sleeping and moving .The only problem was a air conditioner coil that was replaced, apparently a standard astra problem over the years. It has a bit of style and space for a very affordable price, go out and buy one today.
Reliable, inexpensive

Electronics!
Was a great car when i first purchased the cdx 2dr astra coupe 2007 model, second hand 30000km. Then the problems commenced. In four years I have had two batteries, two water pumps, no horn function, coolant sensor fault, looses idle (auto), failed to start on many occasions (starter motor/alternator/key barrell). All i get told at the mechanics is I bought an astra!
quick, compact car - suited me when i first got my licence

Roof problems hard to fix
I have had a 2008 hard top. They are very heavy however my biggest disappointment is my roo stopped working. Holden can't fix it! I have taken it to one place who spent five hours on it they can't work it out. Then they said to go to another dealer, how hard can it be?

Great storage space
I bought mine brand new in 2005 so I have to say after 7 years and 120,000 km I've gotten my money's worth. The best thing about this car is that you can buy accessories and gadgets for it from the UK or Europe off ebay. You can then watch a youtube video on how to install accessories or service the car because these cars are very common overseas. Cheap and easy to fix for example the blower resistor on the A/C which cost less than $20 AUD one month ago to fix and simply involved watching a youtube video. You can also buy the cruise control s...Read more
talk of ebay in the UK for less than $20 and then you can buy the diagnostic program for peanuts to upgrade. There are a lot of forums overseas which have alot of useful information as well. Its much cheaper to run and own compared with a 4x4 but has more useable boot space because you are not wasting the boot with giant wheel arches. I recommend buying good tyres and maintaining regular services. Its good for family holidays and I think it is hard to replace because there are not too many cars of this style, size shape. Maybe the skoda wagon but that costs a bomb to service and I will wait until either the new Astra wagon is sold here or Skoda gets a bigger presence on ebay, forums and youtube for servicing etc. Cheap parts and accessories coupled with Vauxhall/opel forums and youtube videos make it easy to own for a long time.Similar opinion? Excellent
We bought the Astra before my son was born and I wanted a car that fit a pram and dog in the back. It has more boot room that most cars on the market, including most 4WDs that are designed for kids and all the stuff that comes with them! It has great safety features, is very quiet inside and is a very stylish, well put together car. About the only thing I could even complain about is that the interior light is at the front which makes it a bit hard to see to get kids out of car seats. We also bought the 60th anniversary which had heaps of extras thrown in for free, including cool tyres.
Love it. Quiet, roomy, gorgeous car.

It's a great car and a great head turner, especially with the top down. only dissapointment-engine is starting to get a bit noisy after only 13K.
looks great and drives well, handles corners sensationally.
Indicators are hard to turn on and keep on.

Good
A great car that we hired for a day to do a trip down the highway. The car handles well for a front wheel drive, steering is responsive and brakes. The back seats have enough room for 2 adults and we even had our son in his child seat (forward facing) with plenty of room. The roof is quick and easy to take off/on with the flick of the switch although with the roof off we couldn't fit anything in the boot so had the roof on for most of the time so we could fit a bag and a pram in. The car had enough power to get us up hills which we were impress...Read more
ed by it being a 2.2L engine. Overall a good car for couples or singles but not recommended for a family car as I would have liked. Convertible (obcviously,) On Board CPU that tells you your fuel consumption, cruise control, handles well areound bends on the highway, rear parking sensors (definatly needed) Boot space is down to nothing if you have the roof off, rear visability is very poor due to the high rear of the car so have to be extra careful when reversing, front wheel drive, stereo sound is not as good as you would expect for a $50K car, a bit of road noise when on the highway1 comment

Not impressed with this good-looking car
I could not wait to buy a convertible but have learned from this car that they're just a bad idea. The roof seals leak during heavy rain which broke my heart, I've taken it back to Holden a few times under warranty (luckily) for an incessant squeak from back windows, flaps that spin out when roof is let down needed oiling two times in 6 months, shade that needs to be pulled out in order for roof to come down snapped back halfway during converting which caused my boot latch to snap - I had to drive around with a boot half way open (backwards!). ...Read more
There were a couple of features I did like: the small petrol tank, fairly good on fuel (9.3L/100km), the orange dash lights (different to the usual green), gear changing is a breeze due to light clutch, 6-speed manual rather than just a 5, nice sporty seats with seat warmers, and various other small things like steering wheel buttons etc. The thing that really got to me was that there is NO storage space at all; they could have put a storage box on top of the dash (like the Cruze) or next to the steering wheel (like the Eos) or even either side of the radio (like the hybrid Camry) but all they give you is a slot under the head unit which fits a cigarette lighter and no more! I will never buy a convertible again -- going to get a car with a sunroof instead. Drives well, nice sporty handling, light clutch/easy gear changes, seat warmers Roof seals leak, absolutely no storage space whatsoever, no room in the back, no mp3 decoder or aux port, no auto headlights -- lacking a lot of features that I belive a 2008 model car should carrySimilar opinion? Nice but Costly
Have had this serviced at Motorama SpringwoodQueensland since purchase so it is maintained as per warranty and manufacturer recommendations.
At 10 months batery dies, not covered by warranty, who cares about warranty on consumabkes but a battery should last more than 10 months!

a new car lasting <20,000 kms isn't a good signof overall quality. At 23,000 kms had to replace ALL the brakes, apparently these are not rated for more than 25,000 ( we're senior suburban drivers so hardly hooning or performing hard braking. Brakes pads were fine but brake spindles shot, hmm don't think it was due to hooning!Holden mechanic said he'd buy a VW before buying any mid-range Holden, gee that sort of sums up what the technical staff think! At 42,000 kms engine seals required replacing, again not driven hard or for extended duration. Techician just laughed and said it's an Astra.. Sort of sums it up!Similar opinion? Watch out for the timing belt and water pump
Up until last week I would have said the Astra was a good litle car, however on a drive to Newcastle this week, the car stalled on the highway. What had happened was that the water pump failed and this lead to the timing belt malfunctioning causing damage to the engine head and head gaskets.
The timing belt/ water pump was due to be changed in 2,000km's. On speaking to my mechanic, he said that he has had 4 such failures with the Holden Astra this year. He says there are very few manufacturers that change the timing belt and associated equip...Read more

I regret the day that I drove out of the dealership!
I purchased this vehichle at 60,000 kms. It seemed to have been well maintained by the previous owner and as such I did not think that I would have too much to worry about.... And I was right until I got to 120,000kms and was informed by the Holden dealership that this vehichle didn't seem to have had the timing belt replaced at the 60,000km service.. And I was lucky it had made it to 121,000kms (double its life expectancy) Of course I was shocked, because the dealership had assured me that everything on the handbook service had been completed....Read more
I immediately had this timing belt replaced and thought right....that should last me to 180,000kms. Then at 121,300kms the problems started... I started to hear this tap tap tap sound after driving home from Townsville where I had had it serviced so I headed straight to my local mechanic.... Turns out that the oil had been dumped in TSV and the guys who had serviced it at Holden, had either not refilled it, or had not put the sump back in properly....and I had no oil... my mechanic said I was lucky that the engine had not seized and he called the Holden dealership and gave them a serving. I probably should have taken them to court or at least fought for my money back on that service. Luckily after a close inspection my mechanic was confident that there was not any major damage and he sent me on my way and because I felt that there was no major damage I let the whole experience slide and simply promised myself that I would never go to that service centre in Townsville again. I followed up with the mechanic in Airlie Beach and had regular services every 10,000kms and kept a very close eye on the oil!! At 140,000kms the car lost all power when I was driving one day, was a flat battery caused by the alternator regulator or something... Being a girl I did the google thing and accepted that it was going to be another rather expensive bill from the new mechanic as I was now in Mission Beach.. Can you imagine my horror when it was over $1,000 to get the car running....plus a new battery. When the car really started playing up at 145,000kms and was reving irratically I could have cried.... another $1,200 and the car was running fine again.1 comment
from what i read the water pump and the cams share the same belt. so the last time you gave up was when the cam belt snapped. I feel sorry for you reading this.
