Great in most areas...
I am done with 2-stroke! This machine, even though it is a domestic unit is a 4-stroke and everything that I hopped for. Quiet, powerful and easy to use. My only negative would be the balance of it - the controls need to be a little higher up the shaft to make it more comfy when using. Easy to start and you can't over-prime it. So simple now just using normal unleaded fuel. Have had it for 6 months and never missed a beat.

Light enough for the missus!
Have had this bent shaft whipper snipper for over 10 years, it is still running like a beauty. We live on 5 acres so it gets a fair bit of use in summer time. The wife uses it more than me so the following is her feedback.
The good:- Light enough for her to use for hours at a time, no mixing of two stroke fuels, no smelly smoky two stroke fumes when using, doesn't require a lot of maintenance with a oil change every 6 months or so, not very loud when running, easy to restart when it is hot, very economical on fuel.
The bad:- Sometimes hard ...Read more

Reliable and Robust
This machine is a reliable, easy to start and user friendly. It's a little more expensive than most trimmers but the old adage is you get what you pay for. Replaced a Stilhl fs 38 which was rubbish. This is my first Honda product and won't be my last after having used this trimmer.

Disappointed in
I suffered a similar issue to Paul - lack of detail in the manual for changing the line. There was a separate sheet of paper which alluded to how the cord should be changed, however it was virtually in pidgeon English. Pity Honda Australia couldn't see their way clear to publish their own sheet, with clear and concise English for us simple folk. I sort of understand the odd typo (although why I do in this day n age is beyond me!!), but whoever let this through to accompany the sketchy manual is imbecilic...I also watched several U Tube versi...Read more
ons of how to change the cord, but it appears my unit must be a later version, as there are no "latches" on the housing to release the spool. On the sheet it talks about revs of 4.500; 6,000 and 10,500 to when "bumping" to extend the line, however the salesman advised it should be done on max. speed.?? & how does one tell what the Revs are at any given time?? Disappointed in this purchase, as I had 2 previous units, both Ryobi and unfortunately, both 2 stroke. I went for a 4 stroke to alleviate issues with the petrol clogging in the 2 stroke, hence no Stihl, which was my 1st option, although I was pleased at the time to have another Honda, but that exuberance has since vanished - where's me scissors??

A really good trimmer ruined by the bump head
This is a really reliable trimmer from the 4 stroke, easy start motor to the shaft, right up until you get to that horrible bump head. I've never had a single bump head trimmer that feeds the trimmer cord reliably. I told the salesperson that when I bought it and they assured me this one was reliable...nup! It started out OK but after 3 months it was more petulant about feeding the line and the last time I used it it fed the line out too fast and continuously (no - I didn't wind it incorrectly!)
Shame really. It makes an otherwise well designed and reliable unit really frustrating to use.

Rolls Royce of Whipper Snippers
Best ever Whipper Snipper, easy to handle and being four stroke means no more mixing fuel. May have to change spark plug every twelve months but that is all the maintenance it requires. Easy cord replacement and i find a 2.0 mm size cord works very well for a smooth fine cut on your garden edges. Thoroughly recommend this product and with special care it will last you forever.

One of the best garden tool in my shed.
I bought it 1 year ago and used for more than 20 times now. Very easy to start just 1 pull or 2, power is enough for suburban family, no mix oil messy. The only 2 things you should think about before you buy it. The first, it is heavy. Compare with some 2 stroke unit on the market, this one probably 1 kg heavier than a light 2 stroke unit. When you hold it longer than 15 minutes you can feel it. The second, if you are taller than 180 cm, you better think a straight model. The bent shaft is not comfortable for a tall man. You have to bent you b...Read more
ack a little bit to work. I am 180 and I can feel the pain when I work with it longer than 15 minutes. If you have a big yard and is a tall man, try a straight model. Anyway, this is a one of the best garden tool in my shed.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

BEST LINE TRIMMER EVER MADE
I have owned several others eg Ryobi, Stihl and TAS, this is the most reliable, easy to start, easy to load the head, a pleasure to use. My elderly father has one for many years, even fitted the head with a circular saw blade to trim along the electric fences at the farm, has done hundreds of hours trouble free, even my brother has one... Fantastic piece of equipment Honda tough!!

So far so good.
I bought this Honda after reading a lot about them on here and other websites. The combination of being 4 Stroke and a Honda as well as the good feedback was what won me over. So far I have used it twice. Heaps more grunt that my previous Stihl (which developed many problems in lt's last years), great balance, great feel. So quiet when running. Easy to start - the guy at the Honda shop took me through the procedure as well as all the other things about it.
So time will tell. I will do another write up to add to this one in say 6 months after using it over summer in Queensland - that should try it out well enough.

Great little machine
Had two strokes for over 25 years, but got sick of making up fuel in 400ml batches as 2 stroke, then, did not have a very good shelf (I have since found that the fuel Stabilizer, that some companies market, does actually work). My top branded model two stroke had one major flaw, hard to start. So I traded it in on the Honda. In over 5 years, and some pretty have heavy work, it has not failed to start and keep up with the rough stuff. The only thing with them, is as a four stroke they are slightly heavier to lug around, but with the hassle f...Read more
ree use, to date, I have no intention of ditching it. Very easy to start when done properly. It does take a minute to warm up, like most machines, so don't expect them to fully "scream" immediately from a cold start. Have found that it runs better with 98, but have been warned (mower dealer) only to use 91 or 95 and never 98 (runs too hot) or E10 .1 comment

Functionally excellent, but has maintenance issue.
Starts easily, is fairly lightweight, 4 stroke just keeps going, does not vibrate or induce joint problems, nicely balanced - a joy to work with. Maintenance wise, the clutch has gone twice over several years, and the 2nd time, the vibration that happened before I fixed it, wore out the bearing, so it was leaking oil. Being too costly to fix, I sold it one eBay and bought a new one. Bump heads for the new one are about $50, a bit steep, whereas with the old one only the knob was needed.

Goes Pretty Well. Can be hard to start sometimes
Works okay. Is hard to start at times. Seems to splutter quite a bit when warming up. I expected a bit better than this from Honda. I found it light and easy to handle just a bit hard to get going. Hope it will last years as I would expect but I'm still a bit sceptical.

Impressed
I purchased this model yesterday for $329 from a Honda dealer 15 km away as my local dealer said $399 and would not price match, pretty poor effort and I had to drive to the other side of Melbourne to get the $299 deal, not worth it and now I see the 425u is discontinued. Anyway I tested it out on some 18 inch long wet grass and immediately noticed the difference in torque from my 2 stroke Stihl. The Honda handled the job easy without effort, quiet and smooth motor with very little vibration and line so easy to change as well, pretty happy with...Read more
it so far and hope it stays that way, if I get the same reliability as my Honda Blackbird I will be extremely impressed but time will tell. After the job was finished my arms weren't buzzing from vibration and I didn't stink of 2 stroke oil, 4 stroke for sure. UPDATE...Almost 2 years on and still impressed, love this thing.Purchased for A$329.00.

Starts every time. Very quiet
I just returned my 1month old Stihl brush cutter because it wouldn't start. Used it once and didn't want to start. Traded for the Honda I should have bought - lesson: don't trust the salesman! The dealer was good and gave me a good trade-in value.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The Honda starts easily every time. It idles easily and quietly and does an excellent job. The trimmer spool is pretty easy to refill. But, like every line trimmer I've owned refilling, while easy doesn't always allow for easy automatic line feed, so I need to stop and manually feed more line. Could be my lack of experience. But this is a minor issue as it starts easily every time.

No diagram or instruction in owners manual
The most common action needed by an owner is to change the line, why there is no detail of this in the manual is beyond belief.Where does Honda have this detail that can be downloaded or where can I contact someone to post the information which should have have been in the manual in the first place?

Still running great.
Have had this whipper snipper for many years now and great. Only ever had one issue where for some reason after half hour use loses power and stops on and off. Took to local dealer for full service and never happened again. Also have an HRU19R mower and same thing except never an issue. I'm not too crash hot on newer mowers though too much going on with safety, etc. Think the HRU19R was the last of the basic cut my grass no problem mowers. Why change so much Honda.

There are kits on-line that claim to do just that and I've used a blade on mine instead of the head so I would think the answer is yes.

GK
Just a point, the gear box, just above the cutting head, needs periodic greasing. The grease hole has a Phillips head screw and a mower shop should have a tube of grease.
