When running, legend unit.
Stalls when revving up. Cant run at high revs. Done carby kit, plug, fuel lines, primer, fuel filter in fuel tank. Blew out breather in cap after soaking in fuel. Checked timing. Running out of ideas. Please help mr honda. I changed the line head to an alloy one with the pre cut line. Great unit when running but it just bogs down & stalls, need 2 reprime 2 to start. That doesnt always work. [email protected]

Bad
I have had my Honda for about a year now, thought it would be a good idea being a Honda but it was terrible. It always lacks in power, I could understand the lack of power if it was something like a 18-20cc engine but a 25cc, I have a 25cc Ryobi and it has a lot more power. Also the "First Time Every Time" starting is rubbish, it takes 3-4 pulls cold and 2-3 pulls warm.

expensive, lacks in power

great machine
I'm a 20 year self employed gardener and use my whipper most days. This is a good quality dependable machine. Change the oil and thats about it - apart from the bump head - this for me is the only negative.
I do a lot of close in hard surface work and they don't last long without a DIY reinforcement - which involves adding a metal surface to the working end of the bump head.
I'd buy a reinforced part if one was available however as it is the (whole $40 plus) head needs to be replaced when the bump is worn.

Not too bad, with some flaws
Went for the Honda as good experiences with their vehicles in terms of longevity. Expensive but not carrying two seperate fuel cans and no mixing of fuel was also appealing. Uses 2.7mm line that makes light work of tougher weeds. Doesn't vibrate too much at all.
Few negatives. Quite heavy for the engine size and power output but then again it is a four stroke engine. Power output not the greatest when compared to a similar sized two stroke but once again expected. Takes several attempts to start even when primed correctly. Biggest concern of...Read more
all is it's been through two carburettors in three years. When asked if this was covered under warranty I was informed that the carburettor is a "consumable" and "the only way they fail is through excessive use". Well... my mower is used relentlessly and never fails, but I use the brushcutter no more than perhaps an hour a month, following all maintenance schedules. My old Ryobi was 21 years old and only died when a piston ring disintegrated! In short, not too bad, but I did expect higher standards of reliability from Honda. No fuel mixing. Takes large gauge line. Quite nice ergonomically. Two carburettor failures, both not covered under warranty, unacceptable on a machine of this price and reputation.1 comment

Good but has minor annoying issues
Bought mine ten years ago and it gets light use - nice and quiet and vibration free. It takes 3 or 4 pulls to start from cold but that's acceptable. The official dealer leaves something to be desired! After 8 years the primer bulb split and thinking "Genuine Honda Parts" the dealer wanted $15. Ends up he told me he uses non-genuine parts. I went to another "mower" place and they had the genuine part for $4-00. I fitted it myself - quite easy. The breather in the fuel cap has a one way simple flap valve breather - it "seized" and after a few mi...Read more
nutes engine use the ensuing vacuum in the tank caused the engine to stop. The dealer wanted exorbitant dollars to sell me a complete new fuel cap when all I wanted was a 50 cent valve. I ended up snipping the valve end so it breathes but have to be careful if holding machine at an extreme angle because it now lets a small amount of petrol leak out. I change the oil and clean the air filter and check the spark plug myself. Can't buy the good genuine cutting cord so use what the professionals use - good heavy duty stuff that lasts a decent while against concrete edges. Get it from the other mower place a little further away than my local dealer but the other place (in Balcatta) doesn't rip me off. Quiet, vibration free, easy to use Official Dealer tries to rip off for parts prices and didn't complete the Warranty details or provide me with correct user info (especially on how to correctly wind cord onto the head).2 comments

Thought would be better
I bought a new honda um425u about nine months ago, thought it would be trouble free for four or five years, got sick of mixing two stroke. started first time in the shop (cityedge mower and chainsaw centre bay road cheltenham), but that has been the only time, shop owner said all i had to do was pump the plastic bubble and pull, Ha Ha,
didn't come with a strap, owners manual or common fault fix guide.
find it very difficult to start, at present i have oil in the air filter compartment,(how does this happen) will only start if choke fully closed, when i try to rev up konks out. "" not happy Jan"" specially for an as new machine

Reliable.
Excellent trimmer, very easy to start (usually only takes 2-3 pulls). I've had mine for 7 years and it's never been serviced and i've never had an issue with it. I just top up the oil as needed.
It's also very quiet which i'm sure the neighbours appreciate.
It takes the 2.7mm cord which i find is more than adequate for the household duties, the engine is also more than powerful enough, most of the time i only have to press the trigger very lightly.

I recently had it serviced at a cost of $93 only to use it several days later when it ran for about 30 seconds and then died. No Problem!
I've had this one for 2 years. I parted with double the money of a cheap one, hoping to get a taste of the famed Honda reliability. My UMS425 is beautifully behaved. It doesn't start 1st time, every time like the salesman said, but I've always got the motor running within 3-4 attempts.
I live on a 3/4 acre block and it gets a work out. Made for it.
Reliability doesn't disappoint. Gutsy engine note.

A joy to use, would not condider buying any other make
After evening after evening of searching through reviews on the internet I finally decided on the Honda UMS425. What mainly sold the product to me was the 4 stroke unleaded feature as I have been getting tired of mixing petrol/oil on other garden appliances I have and this was a lazy way out. I have however only ever had electric brush cutters up until now and a longer garden meant a change to a petrol version. keep control of. After 4 months of use the beast has been tamed and as such I am glad I didn't listen to raving reviews of other manufactures. Next on the garden list will be a new mower, and if the brush cutter is anything to go by it will certainly be a HONDA. No fuel/oil mixing, easy to start, quiteness and oodles of power Should have bought a straight shaft rather than a bent one.1 comment

Negative feedback
This Honda UMS425 GX25 gave me nothing but trouble. At full throttle it stops running all together. At the service they told me it was the fuel that blocks the carburettor. I cleaned the carburettor, but still no go. At $90 for service just to fault find it is not worth it. If the fuel is no good, they shouldn't sell it here.
I thought I brought a good name unit. Now I got trouble for good money.
It doesn't work.

One of the Best
After using 2 stroke line trimmers for years I finally said enough is enough after I couldnt get my
el cheapo Homelite going. So after shopping on the net I went to GYC at Leppington and bought a
new Honda UMS 425 for $299. The first thing I noticed is how easy it is to start compared to the 2 stroke. The other thing which impressed me was the power it has and not only that the bump feed for the line actually works! Four stroke is def. the way to go. And no more fuel mixing!
An absolute Beauty!
The power, ease of starting, no more fuel mixing.

Best Line Trimmer on the market
Best whipper snipper ive ever owned, what a great machine. So easy to start and use, not heavy and was a great price. It feels solid like it will go forever and a day. The big plus for me is how easy it is to reload the cord into the bump head, takes all of like 1 min to reload and keep going, well done Honda. Its a tad thirsty compared to my previous 2 stroke but i don't care, its got so many pluses that it don't matter. Recommend to anyone.
Weight, ease of use, price, quality
Little thirsty being a 4 stroke

Fantastic Honda Line Trimmer
My old 2 stroke whipper broke down after 12 years, and I had a 4 stoke Honda lawn mower. So I purchased a Honda line trimmer, with the sale that Honda was having on this model. What a fantastic unit goes first pull, not like my old two stroke, which would start after 12 pulls or more. Very quiet compare to a two stroke. Does not leak fuel from the fuel tank when turmed to it's side.
Easy start, very quiet and no mixing of 2 stroke fuels

Solid performer
I had a McCulloch 2 stoke before this and grew tired of having to rev the whatsits out of it before you cut. After trying a Honda trimmer I decided they were far better. I bought mine 6 months ago and I've forgotten whatever I paid for it because it works so well. Starting is a breeze (much quicker to start than a 2 stroke), no mixing fuel and much quieter. The best bit is it will cut at very low revs or you can rev it when the going gets tougher, I tried a belt attachment but found this too restrictive. And it's well worth buying quality cutting nylon - lasts much better. You would never use a 2 stroke after one of these!
Starting, noise levels, doesn't need to be revved hard to cut. The only trimmer to buy really.

Our 2 stroke died after only an easy life of occasional use, Decided to research and shop around, Went to Bunnings - no one really helped. So decided to go to the local Honda Dealer in Wangara WA.
