Are there test pots available for DWD? I only found 1L, which is a bit pricey for a test. Would like to see the look on my timber prior to committing.
Hi Scott, sorry a 1L is the smallest size for DWD. Many stores will have brush outs which will hopefully help you decide if you like the general look of the coating however I appreciate the colour that it ends up will be specific to your exact timber.
Is this product ideal for a water jetty deck ?
I have numerous deck in the back yard, mostly in the shade. They were built about 12 years ago and professionally painted with Intergrain DWD. Some years ago I thought they needed refreshing and I belt sanded the surface and then applied DWD again. The result is patchy and not great. I now want to ry and fix it and want to ask how to go about it. Gerry
Hi Gerry, if the finish is patchy we would suggest getting the timber back to bare with a sander to start again. Once it's sanded, clean with UltraPrep Timber Cleaner to get the surface ready to accept the new coating. Putting in the proper preparation will give you the long life and beautiful finish you've had in the past. Hi Erin, I did not think sanding the timber down was an option but I did some sanding in the last hour and decided; hey, I can't go anywhere so I will do it. Once I have used Ultraprep Timber Cleaner, how do I go about it? Do I need a primer and do I have to use DWD or can I use some of the other Intergrain product that is available from Bunnings
Hi Gerry, if you are sanding back to bare timber you can use the Timber Cleaner and then use any coating of your choice as the timber will be fresh. If you like DWD and would like to use it again, definitely recommend the primer first to help seal the surface and get the longest life out of your coating. Or, if you've just sanded back the top surface of the coating (not back to bare timber) and it looks nice and even again (no patchiness) you can use the Timber Cleaner and just coat with DWD, no need to use the primer. The Intergrain Team
Hi Erin, Some of the areas are in very good condition and I will probably simply give them a new coat. So I suppose I should stick with DWD so they all look the same? If so, I will need to get Dimension 4 and DWD. I can't find a retailer near Raymond Terrace that sells DWD (Bunnings don't have it). Can you tell me where I can order it from on-line. Thanks Gerry
Will Dimension 4 seal cedar coated in Weatheroil? Or should it be removed somehow with a prep solution
Best to contact intergrain support but I’d sand back to bare timber. Protecting timber for a long time isn’t an easy job, lots of prep work and lots of coats. Cut corners and you just won’t get the life out of it.
Can I apply DWD straight onto bare cedar, say three coats? Why is the primer necessary?
my house is clad Western Red Cedar boards and I used DWD about 10 years ago and now wish to repaint. The coating is still in good condition except for patches. Can I just coat with DWD or do I still need to do the 3 phase system on the whole lot...very expensive. This area only gets morning sun
Hi, best to speak with Intergrain Tech support but based on my experience a light sand and couple of coats of DWD will be fine. If you have patches that are water damaged with black stains I'd sand these back, use reviva, primer then DWD
Hi Deb and Kim, to ensure your new coating adheres, give the existing coating a light sand, decontaminate the surface with UltraPrep Timber Cleaner (previously known as Reviva) and then apply maintenance coats of DWD. Cleaning the surface with the oxalic acid cleaner is a really important step to ensure the new coat adheres and you get the longest life out of your top coat. Use of the primer will extend the life of the top coat further. The Intergrain Team
I have some external windows that are in fairly good condition with a previous coating of a stain varnish, is it ok to just scrub down with reviva, prime over the varnish with dimension 4 then coat with DWD or will I have to strip the previous coating off first? (I've tried it on a beam and looks ok just wondering if it will affect performance down the track)
Hi Darren, best to give intergrain a call they are the experts. For best result I’d recommend sanding back and then revive, dimension 4 and dwd. I normally put 4 to 5 coats of dwd to give maximum protection and will last 10 years at least. 1 or 2 coats of anything just doesn’t last especially if it’s direct sun and exposed to rain. It’s a brilliant product but a little bit of work to apply properly.
We oiled our merbau deck on a warm sunny day. Two days later it rained and the deck now has streaky milky stains across sections of the deck - can you pls advise what this is and how it can be fixed?
Had the same problem with dwd. The milky stains will dry up and go away. Once it’s fully cured you won’t have the problem again
Can intergrain dwd be applied with a roller
Hi Julie, we recommend that you do not use a roller to apply DWD. Instead apply with a quality brush or spray. If you are coating a horizontal surface like a deck, use the Intergrain DeckBrush or a flat deck applicator.
Hi I have a lot of hardwood doors and windows that have been varnished and are now peeling and going black with weather damage and was wanting to know what would be better to put on them after we sand them to try and remove some staining either Reviva or the vertical timber cleaner?
Hi Ian, it's difficult to say exactly what products to use without knowing a little more about the surface you're dealing with. I'd suggest after sanding the timber back to bare, to clean the timber with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner (formerly known as Reviva) before applying a new coating. Please contact us on 1800 630 285 to get more detailed advice on your specific project.
I have moved in to a house that has had dwd coated on all the decking. When it rains or I hose it down it leaves a layer of dirt which I cannot budge. How do I clean this layer of dirt off?
Regards
I'm not an expert, but I think you're just noticing the dirt more because of the coating. Whereas if it was an oiled deck it wouldn't show up as much. There is so much dirt in the atmosphere right now. I find the best way to clean mine is with a microfibre mop and bucket.
Two coats of dwd after inter grain prep
Each time it rains it goes milky
Now two weeks in Queensland
Will it settle eventually?
Yep the milky look will dry out eventually it happened to me before
I believe it will. Happens to me each time I recoat. Eventually it stops.
Glad to read the comments....Same experience here, 2 hours north of Cairns in the Daintree. We used Intergrain 20 years plus ago, and never had these problems, and I do NOT hint on climate changes.... I am advised to wait one more week for the 3.coat to cure- just lucky we don't have guests right now who would use the steps.....
Can tinted natural stain go over DWD
Hi Paul, we would not usually recommend this system, if you are changing coatings it is recommended to remove the existing coating first. If you'd like more information specific to your project, we would encourage you to contact our technical help & advice team on 1800 630 285. The Intergrain Team
I've had success mixing a bit in with the dwd final coat or two, staining timber before primer doesn't work, it stays oily and stops the primer penetrating, then the DWD bubbles and peels everything off.
Hi,
We haveJust laid in a black but deck about four weeks ago.
Im wanting to keep the timber as natural as possible while still protecting the timber.
I was thinking about using the DWD, however I read some reviews that said it was not best for lighter timber.
Could you suggest the best product for use
What is the difference between Intergrain DWD and Ultradeck
Hi Susan, while they are both great, highly durable, water based coatings there is quite a big difference. Intergrain UltraDeck is our most popular product as it has a more natural look than DWD, lasts 3x longer than conventional oil based deck coatings and is a one product system. Intergrain DWD is a longer lasting coating when the surface is prepared well and the coating is applied correctly however it is a system product which means you must apply Intergrain Dimension 4 UltraPrimer first, then 3x coats of Intergrain DWD. DWD is a high build product so will give you a less natural look than UltraDeck. It is recommended to test a small area before applying the product to your whole project to ensure you are happy with the colour and finish you will achieve. Hope this has helped you with your project! The Intergrain Team
Thank you, very helpful. We had a few planks to be replaced on our verandah which had previously painted with intergrain Ultra. But we have a full tin of DWD unopened. (?) I was going to use it on an exterior previously marine varnished door the coating which had deteriorated over the years. But it seems like too much bother with DWD.
Can Intergrain Ultradeck be applied over Intergrain DWD on an outdoor deck?
Allan.
Hi Allan, it is possible but not recommended as DWD is more of a varnish type finish meaning the Intergrain UltraDeck finish will not be right. If you like the low film build look of Intergrain UltraDeck we would recommend removing DWD with a coatings stripper or by sanding back to bare timber first. The Intergrain Team
Thanks for your response. Much appreciated
I have used Ultra deck over a previously DWD coated deck without issues. You just have to recoat more often in high traffic areas
Thank you. Will remember for the future
I have a deck which has not been oiled for years. South side of house so no sun and is quite damp. So far I have cleaner with high pressure water and scrubbed with Napisan solution. What is best product to use?
we have used ultra deck on new deck that adjoins one that we had used DWD and now we wish to use DWD on the new deck extension so it blends better color wise can we apply directly over the ultra deck or is it advisable to sand back apply the three stage process.
Hi Les, unfortunately this is not tested so we are unable to guarantee the results if you go over the top of UltraDeck with DWD. At the very least we would suggest to give it a light sand, wash with Reviva and then apply 3 coats of DWD. For best results, sand back/strip to bare timber and do the complete 3 stage process. The Intergrain Team
Is DWD as good as the older UVC to preserve pine outdoors
