Dmax the great
I've just got my 3rd Dmax and just love it. We tow with it and just love going places. Haven't had any issues with any of em. Great for towing and good off road. Fully recommended Isuzu Dmax.
Purchased in August 2021 for A$34,000.00.

Improvement over the last model
Changed from a 2015 LS-T (RT-85) to a 2017 LS-U (RT-87). Both have been used to tow a 2000kg boat and they do most of the family trips these days as well.
As with the last model the ride improved significantly after the canopy & tow bar were added, just like the last one did I'm expecting it to settle a bit more once it has done a bit more towing and had the tray loaded a few times. isy and never revved as freely as this one has done from new. Never had any reliability issues hence sticking with Isuzu. The auto transmission is a mixed bag in the new model. On the plus side it is very smooth under load and it makes for a quieter ride with the lower revs. On the downside the 4th - 5th gear spread of the new 6 speed auto is greater than the 4th - 5th spread in the old 5 speed auto, 6th gear is too high in most situations unless you are driving fast on flat roads. When towing around 90-100km/hr the torque converter rarely locks up and it seems to operate like a CVT if left in full auto - doing anything it can to get in to 6th - even to the extent 6th in auto mode will rev higher than manually selected 5th gear in the sequential mode. Now using the sequential mode when towing & hold it in 5th, mostly locks up the torque converter and the wider torque band of the new engine compensates so it holds 5th slightly better than the old model when towing, (although any incline will usually require 4th). The Hardware is Great, Software Needs Work
I'll say from the outset that my 4 previous cars were new 4wd's (2 Hiluxes followed by 2 Tritons) and this 2017 D-max is easily the best of the bunch. But that's not to say there weren't issues, both initially and one current....

s new 6 speed transmission easily pulled off the mark in 2nd gear and the clutch pedal was half the weight of my previous Triton. It's heavy clutch and lack of low speed engine torque meant you were constantly using the gear lever to "row" it along like a boat and it was killing my left knee in particular. I'd always been a bit of a "die-hard" for manuals but I've conceded they don't work so well with "short-breathed" diesels and determined to go with an auto this time. When first considering buying a D-max, I was frustrated at how much the 2 different dealers and sales staff I consulted didn't know about the car. Since the D-max had a new 6 spd transmission in both manual and auto, my first question of the manual transmission in particular was, "Why?" I found the engine to be especially torquey so I then asked if it was because it had 2 overdrive gears (the "holy grail" of transmissions). All replied in the negative. A week or two later when I finally received my brochure in the post and was reading the specs, there it was - 4th gear was 1:1 ratio. That meant 5th & 6th were both overdrive, in manual and auto. My real dealership frustrations concerned genuine Isuzu accessories. They couldn't actually show me a vehicle fitted with any. When I asked detailed questions about the hard tonneau cover (2 different locking systems) and the sports bar (was it a single welded unit or less desirable bolt together job), no-one knew and they had no close-up photos available. As it turned out, I ordered the wrong locking system for the tonneau, which should've been a moot point because they also didn't know at the time that the hard tonneau cover wasn't available in the Spacecab version I'd ordered. Since the contract was signed, without checking with me, they sourced an after-market version but with the same locking system that I specifically didn't want. And since I was no longer getting a factory hard tonneau, I could've then sourced an aftermarket custom sports bar in the welded style that I wanted, IF I'd have known. So yeah, some heated words were exchanged with the sales manager. Anyway, I've had it nearly a year now and it's generally great but I've had an issue with the new 6 speed auto transmission. I should say an issue in conjunction with the cruise control. I read reviews before I bought the car and knew there were criticisms that the new auto had a habit of hunting for gears, esp around 70-80kph.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Good quality build but seriously uncomfortable
I purchased my 2017 LSU as a demo model in March this year. It had been sold to someone else who traded it in on a Toyota after 6 days of ownership because of his back problem. I have now covered 22,000kms. The ute is well built and reliable. It drives well. That said, the poor quality blue tooth is a problem with people that I call telling me that they can barely hear me. ou they are very comfortable are just exaggerating. I have owned four other utes and the Izuzu is by far the worst comfortwise. After a 300km journey you are like a cripple with back pain and a sore backside. I do a lot of kms each year and this has become a real problem. I actually wrote to Isuzu, received a nice but totally unhelpful reply. I recently spoke to my mechanic who does my servicing. His words were "Isuzu are a well built and reliable vehicle but they lack the refinements of other 4wds in the market. They are not quite there yet. " I can only agree with this view. A great addition
Having owned this now for 6 weeks I think the ISUZU is fantastic.
The vehicle is a light truck after all and it has a robustness when on the road.
The ride is comfortable, I would be the first to complain, since we test drove several other Utes this has to be the one with the most support in the seats, front and rear.
Fuel economy is pretty good, although I haven't taken it on a long journey yet, that's to come, but 'around town' driving ie to and from work it is better fuel than I was getting from my old Mitsi Paj.

Excellent fitness for purpose- superb built quality
Very happy with my D-Max LSU after trading a 2012 HILUX SR5 dual cab with low kms. I need this car for towing a large boat but also have a small farm and go off road occasionally. I test drove other options such as new HILUX and Ranger but not as good a package for my needs. D-Max not as much bling as other options but I am not buying for bling! liner, rubber mats, Water Watch (don't go bush without one). I used the SR5 and new LSU to tow a 2.3 tonne boat. The SR5 was a very good ute. I have always been a Toyota person. SR5 rugged, reliable and very good tow vehicle. Performance almost as good as new D-Max due to a DP chip (DP Chip excellent - more power, torque and better fuel economy). Also SR5 had sat nav with speed zones that LSU does not - why not is surprising. D-Max also does not have a digital speedo that I find annoying for a 2017 vehicle. I put a Navman GPS camera on SR5 that has GPS speed - works well. Transfered to LSU. I have also installed a GARMIN GPS on D-Max to give me digital speed and speed zones. Had my D-Max rust proofed underneath with Septone for underbody and Tectyl 506 for springs etc (due to backing boat into salt water to launch). Also added Isuzu rear parking sensors for car parks (they should be standard on LS-U). My D-Max has ARB steel winch bar and ARB LED bar light. The only sour note on the purchase was dealing with ARB even though they have good products, although ARB LED bar light was faulty and needed replacing. While I am disappointed in ARB, I will not let this affect my delight with the Isuzu D-Max and excellent service from Ron Doyle Motors, the Isuzu dealer. So why did I change my SR5 for a D-Max LSU? 1. Great friendly service from Isuzu dealer at Ron Doyle Motors Eden NSW! Nothing too much trouble to get my new D-Max properly set up for towing and my needs. Superb attention to detail. Excellent and professional after sales support and servicing - a delight to deal with. 2. D-Max very good value for money and best fitness for purpose. 3. D-Max has 3.5 tonne towing. That was the deal breaker. SR5 was 2.5 tonne. For my towing weight I wanted a safety margin. 4. The new 6 speed auto and increased torque in 2017 model.Similar opinion?
