Still Love It
Had this for 12 months now (26 April 14) and still the 35 th best Masport mower I ever had. Take my word for it- I can give you an unbiased review ;-) When I am at work I tell our customers to keep the blades sharp and make use of the mulch as the grass just keeps looking better and better and so does the overall rating for the product

Strong Motor on a Weak Chassis
Bought from Bunnings a few weeks ago and cannot find the source of all the rattling. Bunnings are not interested in the problem and my local mower shop thinks it is just the chassis flexing and creaking and will probably stop when it cracks through. Other than that it has a strong motor and starts easily. I'll give it a "C" minus :(

Masport 470
We brought this mower and haven't had it that long and have had a lot of troubles with it. The bolts have snapped on the muffler due to heat and when we rang customer service they do not want to even talk with you instead your told to go to the retailer from which you brought it! I had a wheel snap and now this! Not happy! What a total waste of money do not buy one of these pieces of rubbish. We were told by the staff this was one of the best money could buy! What a joke! I'm annoyed at the lack of customer service this company supplies, if being hand balled is your thing by all means buy this piece of junk! Very disapointed

Ok for cheap bunnings - chasis is weak
Very good engine, however chasis is junk, cheap build.
In one go the muffler and guard rattle off, when it was 2 years old, motto of the story built for bunnings which cheap rubbish as is everything from bunnings will go to mower store next or total tools for better quality gear

Still gong strong
I bought my Masport 470 in 2010 and its still going strong. Much better than the 2 stoke mowers I used to churn through. Its quitter and chews through the long grass. It hasn't missed a beat.

Cheap-ish but starting to find problems with age.....
I bought this mower from Bunnings in 2012 for $398. Within 2 weeks the pull cord tore so I had no way of starting the mower. As it was so new I went to see Bunnings and they said - go and see the local repairer. Great, funny how my wife had asked the salesperson at Bunnings when buying the mower, "Do you have any problems with this unit" and they answered "No, these things are built to last"..... Funny enough even when you do have problems the seller couldn't care less.... !! The repairer said they would replace the rip cord completely. Af...Read more
ter it was repaired (some 7 phone calls later and 2 weeks in the shop) all they did was reduce the length of the pull cord. Great after sales service...yeah right..... ! Now that it is coming up to 3 years old, the mulching plug just wont fit anymore as the grass built up under the unit prevents it from going into place, so that is useless. Even after cleaning it, it is a too tight a positio for the mulching plug to fit in. The catcher has cracked in 3 places and is being held together with liquid nails. The engine doesn't seem to rev high enough so I can't cut lower than a 6 on any of my lawn and it chews through a full tank each cut I do of about 300sqm of mowing. On the positive the height is easy to adjust and does start on 1 pull most weeks. No more than 2 pulls so that's good. Doesn't smoke more than once in about 12 cuts so am happy with that, but do I think it will make it to 5 years??? Probably not. Even my old yellow Talon lasted 7 years but it was a very heavy mower and hard to manouever.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Be very cautious about reviewers who have a history of just one review and give 5 stars!!!
I agree with the other reviewers. My mower (which I think is Bunnings exclusive) is just over two years and is the worst buy I have ever made. Bits have also fallen or rattled off and even though the owners manual doesn't state it, the catcher has to be inserted in at an angle. Sticking it in horizontally when the mower is running results in the lip of the catcher being destroyed. I took the unit immediately back to Bunning's who said that they don't handle warranty claims and that I should see a dealer. What???? Took it over the road to a...Read more
dealer who said that the catcher is only warrantied for normal wear and tear which means that when grass going in eventually wears it out. The fact that there is a design fault with the catcher doesn't matter. Masport sells a dud deal and then wont stand behind their product. Joe.mackay.334s review below draws some interesting comments which are worth reading. Gee Joe you don't happen to come from Braeside Victoria? This is where Masport have their offices. So Joe or whatever your real name is at Masport, when you read this how about going to your bosses and offering a recall on this product and to make good the defects.Similar opinion? A bad experience
Purchased from Bunnings about 18 months ago. Bits keep falling off and the so called "lifetime warranty" on parts like the catcher is just hyperbole. Unless there is a "manufacturing fault", my experience is the Masport warranty has not been helpful to me as the buyer. Essentially anything that is wrong with my mower is made out to be mistreatment on my part. In hindsight I should have been more cautious with my purchase decision. Before I bought I noticed that the Masport website does not provide any downloads or the fine print of the w...Read more
arranty terms and conditions which should have been a warning to me. If companies are not fully transparent by openly publishing warranty t&cs then I suspose its a case of buyer beware!!! . If you are serious about getting a good mower and one where the manufacturer stands behind their product and parts I suggest you consider your options. Penny wise pound foolish.Similar opinion? Not the Masport of old-
I have about 100 m2 of lawn -flat cooch.
My 1993 Masport served me well for nearly 20 years.
In December 2012 I purchased the 470 from Bunnings.
My opinion is it is not the same quality of old.
I find it runs rough and from new burns oil.
Handle is not bolstered and grip is not comfortable
You need the special oil removal kit at $30 odd because it has not sump plug to drain oil.
The decal rattled off mine and the catcher plastic is not as strong as what my 1993 version.
The "lifetime warranty" for catchers appears to only extends to grass going in. If you accidentally pick up a gum nut - then warranty claims are problematic. New catchers are $130.

As an addendum. The catcher on this mower cracked when the mower picked up a gumnut. Dale at Masport asked me to take the catcher to a local agent Eastern Hills Mowers. The mower shop said that the ca... Read more

Three years old and dead.
I purchased this mower from Bunnings in November 2011. On the weekend (December 2014) two thing happened. A long piece of metal that holds the catcher along the bottom at the rear broke off and then it literally blew up. Oil sprayed everywhere, smoke billowed and the mower died. Up until then, I was happy with it and purchased on the back of a friends recommendation. I can't help thinking a mower should last longer than three years. Very poor.

Perfect
We purchased the Masport mower in march this year great mower easy start and lightweight easy to push. It's much quieter than my previous mower and been great to use. The mower was recommended to me by a friend who was happy with the mower and suggested I went with the Masport. I feel for under $400 you can't go wrong.
Great value and reliable

Poor performance
Bought my Masport 470 from Bunnings 2013 it was great to start but developed a problem operating speed is up and down. I checked the spark plug was all fouled up so cleaned and try out seemed okay. I bought a new plug and changed the oil, it is still running rough and fouling new plug right away. Cannot sort it out and operating manual is useless. Never buy this model again.
Easy Start
Running rough and with fouling of spark plug even if replaced with new one.

No problems yet
bought this mower from Bunning's for under $400.
unpack it and started straight away.
used it a few times and starts so easy.
using only fresh fuel with every use and making sure all the bolts are tight.
so far run only half throttle and cuts well.
the cutting is even and nice without those burn marks in the grass.
the 4 blade system is the best unlike the Victa in the same price range which is only 2 blades
let us see in 3 months what happens with the Masport 470
easy to unpack and start easy
nothing

Cheap price but also cheap build quality, you sure do get what you pay for!
After reading another review on this page, I concur and I have had similar issues. The motor caused the housing to vibrate and I ended up with a crack in the housing around one of the screws, which in turn caused it to vibrate more due to it not being secure. This got repaired within the the warranty period. Six months out of warranty, the mower got a split brace underneath between the two rear wheels, one side of the brace literally snapped clean off. However, as someone below mentioned, Masport Australia fixed it for free after I complained, ...Read more
even though it was out of warranty. It's a piece of junk (albeit cheaper that other mowers) and I'm waiting for the next issue. I originally got recommended this based on Masport being good quality however, I will spend the extra money next time probably along the Honda line of mowers due to this bad experience. Purchase price, generally starts okay, it's a loud mower by comparison to others. Incredibly bad build quality. Has been repaired twice.2 comments
I agree that the mower is poor quality. What annoys me even more is the lack of support from Masport. I alos bought a new one from Bunnings and used it happily for three months ( a totoal of four uses... Read more
) when the cord snapped. I took it back to Bunnings and after a week Bunnings calld to say Masport would not honour their warranty as this was a wear and tear part! Really! Four uses is all they expect their product to be good for! To their credit, Bunnings paid a third party to fix it as they are interested in customers. 17 months down the track the thing can not be started. The cord will not come out at all. I can see why as there is a design fault that I am certain will lead to the cord being cut again soon but has now caused the cord to become tangled. If Masport were a prefessional outfit and had at least looked at the first complaint, the second would not have a happened and they would have been able to prevent future problems. But I think they are only in it for the short term buck and don't expect to need long term customersI have the masport model #478944. Kind of confusing, all their cute names (e.G. Genius, etc) & is called by other names like ""series 21" etc on the numerous labels stuck to it; essentially i think is... Read more
the "genius", without a wood chipper port but does have "smart chute" and deck raised, lowered with one 11 position handle (the good points). But self propel drive is badly engineered, relying on belt slippage for speed control, not gear ratio change as with snapper and better commercial mowers. I paid just under snapper price, mid $700 range (cloth bag not plastic). (1) belt stretched, frayed, useless after 2 days, employee pushing 21 inch mower over 1 acre yard and others in the heat. Belt fixed quickly by dealer. (2) certain temperatures, 6.75 (standard head, incorrectly called it a 5.5 ohv in my own review, sorry!) briggs engine has auto choke that causes engine to be un-startable if warm (not hot or cold) unless choke blade is held open with a pen, screw, or similar) and constant (every 3 lawns) need to pull air filter and choke engine fully with my thumb while running to clear gunk from carb jet... Not something a homeowner would enjoy.... Gives you a gassy finger. About to install "slow-down kit" for this 21 inch push mower, hoping that the lower ratio will require less running of the mower at reduced speeds which seems to destroy belt quickly. The $40 (plus) "slow-down kit" will not be installed free, i've now been told belts are not under warranty either, guess they replaced the first based on its mere 2-day lifespan... So, hoping the belt that comes with the "slow-down kit" (now my 3rd belt, have been pushing manually for over a month) will last longer. Snapper commercial, with real speed ratios for me next time, even if i have to refurb a used one in the fall, or buy one somebody leaves at shop w/o paying their repair bill when grass goes dormant for the winter & shops are stuck with repaired but abandoned machines...Similar opinion? Masport 470 Minus 4 stars
I purchased a Masport catch N Mulch 24 Mayember 2011what a mistake, the motor Briggs & Stratton although a good motor vibrates so badly that it has caused the muffler to crack and break off, the pull start housing has also cracked and broken off at all 3 points it is bolted on to the motor and the attaching spring for the rear axel has snapped off along with the catcher retaining bracket, cant wait to see what else is going to fall off due to the vibrations. It is also without a doubt the loudest mower that I have ever had the misfortune to pur...Read more
chase I would estimate that the noise level would be at 120dbA at the operating position which makes it noisier than a 747 aircraft. I am in the midst of trying to repair all the pieces that have fallen off as I cannot afford to throw it on the dump where it belongs and buy a new decent mower. I feel for Briggs and Stratton as their motors are for the main very good motors however the attachments from Masport are dragging what would otherwise be a good product down. I will try and keep this piece of rubbish going until I can afford to purchase a proper mower but most certainly not from Bunnings and definitely not a Masport. The Briggs & Stratton Motor1 comment

Very Happy jan
Brought one of these about six weeks ago, got it out of the box, put the catcher together, added oil and filled it with petrol, primed twice & as "Wim" has said it started on second pull.
Have since mowed our average size lawn - small back yard but a bigger front yard, side lawn & nature strip & deliberately did not top up the tank to see how it was on fuel after what "ed-8" had said which made me think twice about purchasing it.
Well I can run the mower at minimum throttle & it cuts with ease & are pleased to report that on 1 tank of fuel I...Read more

Not Happy Jan
Have owned this for less than 4 months and it is a dog. Took it out of the box, put oil and fuel in it and started it up. Right from day one it ran rough (keeps speeding up and slowing down) and vibrated a lot. I though it needed a bit of time to 'run in' so took it easy the first few times I used it. But 4 months later it's still no better and probably worse. I can't run the thing at full speed because the vibration is so bad but even at part throttle it heavy on fuel. I use the much attachment so don't have to empty the catcher but even not h...Read more
aving to stop all the time to empty the catcher I need to fill up twice to do my suburban yard. The mulcher attachment has a hole in it around the size of a 50cent piece and the exhaust guard broke because of the vibration. The starter cord won't rewind now so I can't even start the thing so it's off to the workshop already. To really top it off, am told by the service agent that the starter is not covered by warranty so I have to pay to fix the starter on a 4 month old mower. On the plus side, it does start easily and not having to empty the catcher all the time is good. Update: Update, The mower is less than 2 years old and has needed repair 2 more times (so 3 in total). First time Masport fixed most things under warranty. Now it's running poorly again just a week after getting it back from the last repair. Workshop say it's the blades but these are almost new and they were okay before the last repair. Couldn't replace the blades because the workshop didn't have any and they said Masport didn't have any either but that could just be an excuse. Tried to get blades from Bunnings and they were also out of them. The mower is exclusive to Bunnings so you'd think they should have some! Time to scrap the piece of garbage and buy a cheap Chinese mower. They cost half as much and aren't expected to last but I bet I get more than the 20 months I did with the Masport. Starts easily, don't have to empty catcher Runs very rough, uses lots of fuel, starter cord already won't rewind, Tiny fuel tank4 comments

1st day
Opened box, assembled catcher, added oil and petrol, started on second pull.
We have two lawns, one buffalo and the other couch. Results was amazing, both lawns were cut very evenly and all cuttings were trapped in the generous sized catcher. Even when the catcher was full the extra weight did not vary the height of the cut. Very pleased with the mower. Will follow up this review after having used the mower for a season.
Easy start, generous sized catcher, ability to cut close to wall on the left side of the mower

Bought this about 6-10 months ago. Love it,
Only use it on mulching and it’s a breeze to use.
Certainly lives up to the rapid start name - first time every time.
Easy to manoeuvre and love not having the weight of the catcher - plus not having to empty it.
Put the mulcher shield in - that took a wee bit of persuasion- just a tad fiddly nothing more. If you took it in and out all the time would probably have the knack in no time. We haven’t taken it out partly as didn’t want the hassle again but also as don’t need to - I just beg a catch...Read more
