We travelled 12193km in 47 days towing a 1100kg hard floor camper trailer and averaged 11.8lts per 100 km. I must admit I kept the speed on the long halls to about 95 to 97kmph as I found in my NP speeds above 100km knocks the fuel average up to about 13 or 14 lts per 100km.

If treated well, how many KM's should you get out of a Pajero DID engine?

Hi Baree18, I can't help with this question but most diesels will do many 100,000s klms.

It has been known that some DiD engines in standard configurations and with the scheduled servicing are getting in excess of 350,000Km's with no major mechanical problems.
It is when you start playing around with the motor with some modifications, then this may pose a problem later on.

Hi there, It has a timing chain however there has just been a recall on the timing tensioner so hopefully you can get some feedback on wear. The book says at 200,000 to replace but it seems this is not absolutely necessary at that time. I was told that if it is rattlley then do it. Not sure of cost.

Thnx Tony G. I call few Mitsi dealers one said it has a chain. But all others said it has a belt. This is a 3.8 ltr 6

What is the level of service like away from major cities - parts availability, technical services, mechanics' familiarity with the vehicle etc. This is something the Toyota people bang on about but how good is Mitsubishi?

2 answers

I'm not sure as I have not needed to seek services. However, based on the fact that the Pajero has been around for a number of years it could be said that most mechanics are familiar with the vehicle by now.

Peterg21
Peterg21

The good thing is that the Pajero in its various models have been around for over 25 years, the current shape, engine and drivetrain nearly10 years.
This means many of the bugs have been ironed out of the mechanicals over this time, but more importantly many of the 4wd workshops, both Mitsubishi Motors and mechanical repair independents have got good experience with the Pajero.
I get my NT Pajero serviced at a non Mitsubishi mechanical service centre and I have had no problems with their repairs nor service.
When you travel around Australia, Mitsubishi has dealerships in many regional and country towns, though not as many as Toyota, but it would be pretty close.

What is GDI?

2 answers
brian
brian

I googled the internet for you / gdi stands for gasoline direct injection in America / in Australia it would be petrol direct injection / I am not sure exactly how it works though back in the old days most engines used to run by carburettor which used to mix petrol and oxygen then they started.this system which is also known as fuel injection where valves provide the pistons in the engine with petrol and oxygen

brian
brian

It's got something to do with valves sending the right amount of air and fuel though the problem is that most vehicles are run by computers these days

Mate you might find that you were overheating and to protect the engine it kept you in that gear so you'd either stop or slow you down.

I have 2005 Mitsubishi Pajero. My car's front lights were left turned on while it was parked. The battery eventually died. So the car was jump-started. The instruction control light were turned on and are still on. What does it mean an how do I turn it off?

It could be a surge of power or it could be something else / the first best thing to do is to replace the battery then you can contact mistsubishi Australia"s headquarters to see if they can shed anymore light on the subject.

brian
brian

In the future it's best not to jump start a vehicle as damage could occur to the onboard computer / perhaps it's time you took the vehicle to a mistsubishi Australia workshop or a auto electrician workshop might be able to help / you might just even need to a new battery

It could be a number of factors / it could be a blocked fuel line or faulty fuel pump or it could be the spark plugs / my advice is instead of worrying about the cause of the problem perhaps you should try to take it to Mitsubishi to get the problem repaired or a trustworthy honest and reliable mechanical shop to get the problem fixed

brian
brian

It could also be a problem with the transmission computer / also a transmission specialist workshop also might be able to help

It could also be a problem with the electrics in which case a auto electrician workshop might be able to help

I own a 2002 DID Diesel Pajero. I've owned since new and has 185,00kms. To date I've replace the clutch and something in the dash to do with the temperature gauge (as you can see I'm not mechanically minded). Currently I need to have the air conditioning fixed...gas leak...also a leak in the power steering fluid...and I've been reading about a potential problem with the timing chain which would require a new diesel engine. Should I have these problems fixed at the same time and potentially what else am I up for? Trying to decide whether to move on to another car or fix the one I own. Thankyou. Julie

2 answers

Hi Julie..thanks for the email. Unfortunately I'm not I'm not mechanical minded either but what I'd recommend you do is to always have it serviced with a trusted mechanic. I've been using the same mechanic since I've had the Pajero. I don't go to Mitsubishi, not because they aren't good, my mechanic is half the price for the same work and my Pajero runs like new. The age and Km's that my Pajero is at now, 288,000k's, it's gone past the normal Log Book Service so we do a maintenance plan and if an issue arises we fix it.
Those leaks are minor issues, if you decide to keep your pajero, find a mechanic you can trust and I'd get it serviced every 10,000km's not 15,000kms from now on. If you have a concern with your engine, get them to look at it but mechanics these days do a diagnostic check of your engine when your having it serviced, to see if it's loosing power or compression etc, they'd check for normal wear and tear during your service.
Hope this helps.

What do mean by gas leak / is it a gasoline leak like what they call petrol in Australia or liquid petroleum gas / my suggestion is whichever problems you have its best to have them fixed by mistsubishi service workshop or a quality trustworthy and reliable shop otherwise who could cause a fire and that could be dangerous

What is the problem when the DGI is flashing green 4x4 signals or peach light on the dashboard without engaging 4×4 gear?

1 answer
Traveller
Traveller

The four flashing lights on the DGI will come on if there is a fault with the solonoids which activate the transfer from 2x4 to 4x4. I had a problem once with the same issue but it was after they were blasted with a high pressure water blaster. As soon as they dried out properly they were fine again. They are mounted on the right side of the engine bay just below the air box. The flashing amber light I believe is from the switch in the front differential. It seems to come on after about 20 - 25 minutes of constant driving. May not do it around town with the constant stopping and starting. It is a $195.00 fix at Mitsubishi (fitted) and only a short time to replace. Mechanically I cannot fault the Pajero but some sensors are problematic. Like anything, the more you complicate it, the more chance of problems.

thinking of purchasing 2004 pajero np already on lpg, would appreciate any input as to the pros/cons

2 answers
Traveller

Having owned both petrol and diesel 4X4s When I speak to owners of the petrol V6 Pajeros they complain about heavy fuel consumption. I understand the vehicle that you are considering is running on LPG but consider that the engine does burn considerably more gas per kilometre travelled so it is not really as cheap as you might expect. Secondly I have found LPG fuelled motors to be less reliable, especially in the very cold. Perhaps I'm bias but I honestly prefer the TD 3.2lt. It has performed faultlessly. It has really good towing power or for mountain driving with a full load of passengers due to the great torque. Money permitting I would seriously look at the diesel version before considering the LPG. Also consider that if you wish to go off exploring Australia then you will ford water crossings from time to time and that will not trouble a diesel but a petrol/lpg may end up dead in the water. Food for thought!

Very common issue with that model-companion shaft seals.
Usually occurs when under load such as towing.

When selecting 4hlc the orange light starts flashing and the green lights go out. De-selecting, going back to 2 wheels drive the orange light still flashes. When switching the vehicle off and restart the light stops flashing and the vehicle is in 2 wheel drive. When the orange light flashes while the 4hlc is selected, the vehicle is still in four wheel drive, but I don’t know if the central diff is locked. Maybe you can help.

Try selecting LLc when in neutral and if lights flash too long select reverse-should hear a clunk and lights stop flashing.
If they don't stop flashing then one of the vacuum modules may need replacing-not expensive if you do 'em yourself-maybe 20 mins job.Good luck.

Look for engine missing under load-top gaskets leak into plug tubes and cause this.
Look for rust under lower rear door seal.
Look for erratic temp gauge needle.
Listen for whining sound around 60-75kmh-diff wear.(has it got a towbar?)
260 is getting up there for a petrol but not too bad for a diesel, really depends on how well it's been maintained/treated.

I am looking at a 2 door SWB 1999 Pajero Exceed 3.5 ltr V6 with 88000km on the clock. It is a japanese import into NZ. The dealer has just replaced teh cam belt and I think teh water pump. They are asking $13,500 for it. The boody and interior are in mint condition. Most of the people I have spoken to say it is to thirsty and steer clear of them as the blow up. I will not be using it for 4wd just driving to and from work (15 km return)
My question is to all you guys out there is "what do you think" "What would be likely faults" and
"what should I be aware off"?
Thanks very much

Mate whoever said they blow up knows nothing about this engine-just check the Pajero forums online to get real info/advice from people who drive 'em.
My 3.5 V6 is the best, toughest motor I have ever come across in 30+ yrs of driving. With 235000klms on the clock I have just completed a 3000klm trip towing a big van in hot temps including some tough hill work maintaining 5000rpm for several mins at a time, she purs like a kitten and is super quiet like a new car!.
They are no more thirsty than most other 4x4 vehicles-I still get around 14 ltr/100klms regardless of the driving conditions.
Timing belt is the big expense with 'em but your's is done-great! also watch the top engine seals, plug tube seals too-not a dear fix and the temp gauges go nuts due to a pcb error too-again cheap fix.
These are a really great vehicle-I can't bring myself to let go of mine and have no reason to believe it won't give me another 200000klms of service.Go for it-your gunna love it.
