Has the potential to be great, but isn't
So most people looking at these will really want a GoPro, but for one reason or another will go with the Nikon. At the time I was heading overseas I was looking for an action cam, and these happened to be on sale, making them much cheaper than the GoPro equivalent.
Pros: The image is pretty sharp, and having a small LCD screen to help frame shots is great. The stabilisation in normal video mode is good. The compositing of time lapse is also good. It's rugged, small and light.
The cons: It won't charge via USB from the PC. You have to leav...Read more
e the waterproof door open to plug it in to charge - meaning it's going to get worn, as well as taking in dust and dirt, so that will fail at some point. The time lapse settings only composite 10 seconds of video. So if you want to get a sunset time lapse, you'll have to use a stop watch, then run out and change the battery, and stitch the videos together later. Particular problems my unit has: It often thinks the battery is flat and won't turn on even with a fully charged battery. The remote shooting using mobile phone never worked - just couldn't get it to sync, meaning I was never able to use it the way I intended. Similarly, uploading photos to mobile device doesn't work. It refuses to detect the memory card if it gets cold. I'm not talking freezing here. Like, 5 degrees C taking night sky images (which it has a setting for) it refuses to work.Similar opinion? Clunky and difficult to use.
With a name like Nikon on the front you would think this little action camera would be pretty good.
Unfortunately it never really manages to be more than average.
The 170 in the name refers to its 170º field of view. As you would expect with a lens that wide it's better in the middle than at the edges.
It offers both video and stills, comes with a few mounting options included in the box, can (apparently) be used under water and also has a wireless remote.
So up to that point everything is great. Honestly the fact that it was good t...Read more
o go straight out of the box is the reason I bought it. But it doesn't quite deliver on it's promises. The remote doesn't work well. You can't set the camera to take bursts. It's waterproofing means you can't operate it while connected to a power supply. Managing images and videos is challenging. And it's too heavy to be mounted on anything that isn't solid. Clothing and harnesses are definitely out.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
