Good basic solid 4WD
I am onto my 3rd Y61, The current one is a 2014. They have ALL been good reliable stable genuine 4 x 4's Yes they could do with more power, but with more power comes more fuel. Considering the size and weight they do pretty well on fuel.
They are old and tested technology, they really have changed little in the last 30 years. Some see this as a negative, but I see it as a plus when the going gets tough (I am a professional Automotive/mechanical engineer).
It is comfortable on long trips.
BUT I have decided this will be my last Y61 in 3 or 4 years when I want to replace this one.... There is some newer tech out there that is finally making my head turn.... and in 3-4 years we will see how that is going for reliability.
Purchased in June 2021 for A$50,000.00.

Oil ZD30
Have Navara 05 ZD30 same engine as patrol and best oil for them I've found so far is penrite 15/50 totally different vehicle even on cold startup, they chatter alot on the 10-40 15-40 especially castrol magnetic and had to change castrol mag every 2500-3000kms absolute crap,210000kms and running like new PENRITE 15W-50 HPR DIESEL

PERFECT ZD30 motor. Not a Problem in the world.
I have had the 2002 ZD30 Diesel Auto since new. It has 112,000kms on the clock and has not missed a beat. I highly recommend this motor to anyone.
I was told if maintained and not over strained in the towing dept. meaning nothing greater than its recommended braking towing capacity you will get at least 500,000kms without breaking into a sweat. Plus its more economical than the 4.2lt brother. Plus cheaper to maintain than the 4.2.
Highly recommened. You cant go wrong!

I had a 2007 ST 3 ltr
The actual driving of it was good as it held the road well, the noise inside was normal for a diesel, the reliability was good maybe because it was the common rail system, running costs were average as my trips involved a roof top camper which raised my fuel usage.Faults were Nissans response to cracking on right rear door and the same on rear bumper and when complaining they said i must have been driving on ROUGH roads,it was my 4th patrol but have had Landcruisers since,so overall i was happy with them but Nissan were not at all good to deal with,i think the problem with the ones with engine failure was they were trying to get to much out of them

Keeps breaking down on freeway drives..
Mechanics have said its the diesel pump and quoted 4k..but cant guarantee it will fix problem..very dissapointed and have since found others having similar problems...some have called it a lemon...i have no choice but to trade it in as i wont be able to sell it privately.also on my 3rd alternator..nissan service has been quite poor as well..its back to holden for me..

Offroad Lemon
Had an 03 ZD30 ST-L. Was so comfortable. The leather seats were lounge chairs, You feel like you're driving a truck, I had Mods so power was plentiful, towing was easy and it goes anywhere you point the nose at.. I now have a hilux and Offroad ability does not come close to that of the patrol. BUT! Good things always come to an end don't they. Spent a lot of time in the work shop sending me broke, ZD30 is a terrible motor, If you buy a patrol dont buy the ZD. End result was a 30k debt and a 1995 hilux upgrade

How Nissan took something great and improved it to death
The Patrol was great. Tough, good suspension and gearbox and easy to clean! tHen the 17" wheels, abs and body cracking! The abs stops you from spinning or skidding wheels in slippery conditions. So it is no longer an off road vehicle and I have been towed
by Suzukis! Embarrassing

Fuel average
I've owned this car 1 year now. I've noticed huge differences if you sit on 100kph and 90kph. Average both tanks have been 650 to 670ks sitting on 85 to 90ks at 100kph I was getting 550 to 600. No towing but car has many things inside. Never reached dead empty on main. Even befour switching over from main to sub. I've noticed I can get 60ks sitting on empty. So it would've been close and no fuel light came on. Not sure if it has one.

ot a 4wd till you put lockers then it is a 4wd i know the money is a lot to me i am happy with the patrol you have to to think of what you want before you buy most of the others are more expensive to buy & in the SUV range what can you buy new & go off roading from the show room to the track you buy it to go off road not for shopping & picking up the kids from school & remember they are not more safer than a car this is my point of view.Similar opinion? Basic but Good
When we looked at Patrols we were changing from a BMW X5 for something more useful and useable off-road (the X5 was hopeless). We looked at/test drove the Auto first but were not impressed. It was sluggish and slow to respond and appeared to be under-powered. Then we tested the Manual and it was like a different car again, responsive and appeared powerful when considering the engine size to weight of the vehicle. We tow a caravan and should note that the Auto is rated to tow just 2.5T whereas the Manual is rated to tow 3.2T. Inside the vehicle ...Read more
comfort is very good with nice plush seats and a good driving position and there is a separate Air Con for the rear compartment. Yes it lacks a few fancy electronic gizmos but if you're wanting to go across the outback as we are, then the lack of things to go wrong is a good thing. Driving, it drives well and for the size/weight we get reasonable fuel economy at around 11L/100kms, and towing (2.5T caravan) we average 17L/100kms. Engine Power is fine when you're just driving around, but for towing I wish it had a little bit more grunt for the hills. It does it ok, but you do slow down a bit on the hills. I've still got the car and am planning of keeping it for a few more years yet, but will probably fit an engine chip (steinbauer) to give me that little bit extra. Off road ability is outstanding and mine has been everywhere and the 2012 model has the rear diff lock too which is handy. If you can't afford a LC200 and want to go off road or in outback AU where you can generally only get Nissan and Toyo parts (and some Ford) then I would recommend you to have a look at the GU Patrol.Similar opinion? 4.8 Patrol brilliant
I love Patrols (the 4.8 petrol) - have had 3, have racked up over 300,000 km with absolutely no problems. They have gone extreme off road, then back to cruising on long trips, without ever breaking down. Very comfortable, road holding good for what it is. Only thing is fuel consumption at around 17l/100km, but that is a small price to pay for such a great car

3.0ltr turbo deisel STS patrol wagon
I bought my Patrol 3.0 TD in 2004 and despite the negative press on the 3.0TD engine, I have now done 125,000klm ( yes I dont drive it much) and never had any issues. I have changed oil every 5000klm and used Castrol Magnatec 10w40 but I must admit I dont tow anything heavy or do any 4x4 work. I think the 3.0 TD engine issues were sorted out pre 2002 anyway werent they? All I have changed on my Patrol are the bonnet rams which lost their pressure. I still have the original brake pads on the car!

Patrol lacks quality
In 2012, we bought a 2008 Ti 3.0 L auto patrol with 130,000km.
It's a capable vehicle, but let down by poor quality. It's only up to 142,000km & we have replaced the a/c evaporator unit & less than 6 mths later, split a/c suction pipes, each time approx $800.
The reversing camera & GPS unit works when they feel like it. Has been repaired a few times, still the same. The clear coat on the flares has been blistering since 2013, & what's with the cancer of the dash, is this problem still around? Very poor Nissan, very very poor.

Waste of money
I have had 5 new patrols over the years all have been good but with this model Nissan have not put enough thought & have used poor quality parts. I have had this car since new & well looked after, servicing, clean, garaged & have had nothing but trouble, as soon as the 50,000 k/m warranty was over the starter motor needed replacing, radiator blocked, went on a dirt road & the screws holding in the rear lights fell out ( this is a 4wd people !! ) the car went into limp mode & turbo died whilst towing. After all these years NO MORE Nissan for me EVER AGAIN !! I traded this heap of rubbish on another brand. Stay away from these cars.

An expensive, fuel and money guzzling LEMON
Never buy a Nissan Patrol. We bought one and it has broken down at least once a year, ruining holidays and costing us a LOT of money. The dealerships don't want to know - rude and unhelpful. Nissan also put out a product recall on the car, made the issues worse AND charged us for the work. Worst car I have ever owned. Do not buy one, you will regret it thoroughly if you do.

Rear door fracture warranty
My GU nissan patrol 3ltr common rail turbo was purchased new in April 2010. I have only done 72,000 km and have discovered that the rear wheel carrying door has a crack through the steel frame at window height. After checking with a few mates who have the same model 3 more of them from 2009 onwards have the same crack in the same place. This is not a one off. I am currently asking Nissan to fix this under warranty. I'll let you know how I go.
12 months later and after extensive communication with Nissan through my local dealer to achieve a wa...Read more

Blown up turbo at 36,000kms and no warranty
Well, just heard from Nissan about 10 minutes ago and they will not cover my vehicle (2013 GU8, 3L CRD) for the blown turbo at 36,000kms because a "foreign object" made the damage.....not sure how a foreign object could get into the turbo in the first place.....well, after 2 Patrol, it is time to go to Toyota.....

4.2Ti is a Tank
Well I have my 2004 GU IV 4.2ti, 3in exhaust, turbo boosted to 12psi, 215lt main tank, stock sub both filled to the brim, camp gear for 4 adults, 80lt fridge and towing camper trailer about 950kg. that being said river crossings a breeze, climbs the mountain trails no probs and thinking about putting an "attach Toyota here" sicker as it seems I'm always pulling them out or up and goes on the highway only downfall it is thirsty.
its a small price to pay though coz at the end of the day it's unbreakable and extremely capable.

Great vehicle but a bit thirsty.
'Boris' my Patrol is a top vehicle for my purposes ie outback travel and carrying boat bits etc. I have a 2008 GU Patrol, 3 litre, 4 speed auto, DX model (ie no 3rd row seats and vinyl floor coverings). It is an ex NSW Police vehicle purchased with 62,000 Km on the clock and has been great off road in Qld, NT, Kimberley, SA and outback NSW. The vehicle now has 97,000 on the clock so just run in. The bubbled dash was fixed under warranty with no questions asked. I have not identified any cracking around the rear large barn door so perhaps this i...Read more
s an isolated incident. I hope not to experience the engine problems that some earlier 3 litre turbo diesels had. The only downside is the thirstiness of our 'Boris' as he is a big drinker. Even though I try to drive moderately I never achieve the reported 11L/100km it's more like 13L/100km or 16L/100km towing a camping trailer. An extra gear or two on the auto may make all the difference to the fuel economy. I previously owned a 2.8 turbo diesel MQ Patrol manual 5 speed RX model (also ex NSW Police) which I had for 12 years when it was stolen from the driveway, probably for parts. Poor old 'Basil' was a bit gutless but never let me down.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Updating your Patrol
For people like Brudus.
I've just sold my '02 ST patrol this arvo. Owned from new. full service records Full synthetic oils. A dream car. Bought to tow our 6.5mtr offroad caravan 2.2ton empty around 2.7 to 3.2 ton when rolling (water capacity)

Different car. pulls from 13\1400rev's extra gear in the bottom\middle of power range. Torque like you wouldn't believe.
Av fuel with van. around 6.5KMPL.. Without, 9 + KMPL
and that's over the 12 yrs I've had it Less...Read more

I can/have. 1 patrol full tanks. 1 3.7tinny on roof. 15hp in rear with cat and incidentals. Caravan with EMPTY water tanks (just 20ltrs in first one of three.) Filling them when we get to destination. I travel with 100ser last yr of seesl plus several others from 80 up and meet with a 200 ser 1st edit. and a coupla GU/GQ's over the yrs too. The 3 ltr with load UP TO 3 ton. is most economical and efficient on road. Most comfortable and many times better than any Toyota STANDARD on marbles and off road. Why do you think 90% of competition vehicles in this country are some 80 ser. 80% GU/GQ and suzi. Land rover. Jeeps don't even step off bitumin. unless a shorty with full rebuild under it. and most of the Toyota's have Nissan running gear under 'em too. Get facts right brother. Toyota have a LOT more problems than Nissan. over a much wider range of problemss. Don't even mention the early 100 ser that used todrop theor front endss out onto the road when they hit marbles or corrugations. see ya. Bronc's. Rabbits playing. back after 1\2 time.Similar opinion? Is it safe to buy a 2006 patrol 268,000km st zd30
Diesel manual

It's a 3ltr nisian there cheep to pick up Becouse there a time bomb. Some call them the (grenade) I would stay clear the running gear is all good but the engine will need serious money spent every 50 thousand km ?... Some people say they never had a problem and others go through a engine rebuild at 10 grand +++. The older patrol gu 4.2 turbo desiel 1999 to 2004 (that has not been malestered with cheep eBay parts) Hard to find that's why you still pay 20 to 30 thousand for them.
Ok thanks they want 9 for it. It is a stock standard nothing been done to it. My partner said it hasn't got much power took it for a drive around the block a couple times
Yeah I'd stay away... 3 ltr patrol was not a good thing.
But my 4.2 patrol is not built for speed it's build to pur along and get me there and back... I'm not in a rush and the speed limit is only 110 100 up where I go but off the track it's nice to feel safe and not be sliding around towing my camper..
