Good Truck But brick bats for engine
Cannot understand why Nissan did away with the 4.2 Turbo Diesel engine for the miserable 3.0 Litre I had a 4.2ST and it was amazing but the 3.0 Litre engine is terrible and drinks more fuel, it is the worst truck I own, I loved the 4.2 towing and normal payloads were easy, not now and I will trade it for a Landcruiser people ask me how come I have the 3.0 Litre as they warned me not to buy but I fell for it and paid the price. They are so bad and if your in the market to buy one for towing DON'T
Seats and interior good
Noisy engine and no guts

1998 gu 4.5
This is the 4th patrol I've owned, top rig for everything I've done in it same with the other 3, very good off road as do a fair bit of 4wding only thing is its a bit thirsty on the juice, have turboed this one an 3" turbo back exhaust, front mount intercooler- running 12psi boost, since the turbo fittered no needed to drop back to 4th up hills as before the turbo install I had too
Reliable, plenty of room, built tough an can take a thrashing

The best factory bush capable vehicle ever made
The GU Nissan Patrol is without doubt the best factory capable 4x4 ever made. It's bullet proof driveline and rear LSD eats the land cruiser for breakfast. Any one with true bush experience will tell you that a well driven patrol will take you further than any vehicle "period"
Having owned three myself the 4.5 petrol the 3.0l turbo Diesel and now the ever reliable mighty 4.2L turbo Diesel I can honestly say I would have any of them again tomorrow. Whilst each have a purpose like power, torque and fuel economy the truth is all have the same vehicle build quality and equally as capable with different pros and cons. In my opinion you would have to seriously abuse this vehicle for it to fail you.

Absolute rubbish
24000 km on a brand new 2013 ST partol and engine has blown. Nissan wont cover it under warranty as a non genuine oil filter was installed. Nothing wrong with the filter just didn't have Nissan written on it, whick apparently caused the piston to punch through the engine block. The Nissan warranty is not worth the paper it's written on! Dealer has washed their hands of the car. I'm told it will cost $11,000 for a new motor six months after spending over $55,000. Should have paid the extra like my mates and bought a Toyota. d drives well when the engine is not expolding! Do your homework before purchasing a Nissan Patrol. I'll be saving up my money and buying a Toyota as soon as I repair and trade this lemon. Good by Nissan Australia. You have lost my confidence in your ability to act in an ethical manner towards your customers. New for old replacement in the first 12 mths! (what a joke) Looks good when working Engine explodes at 24000km. Nissan warranty not worth the paper it's wriitten on!7 comments
Hi Adam, is your patrol a 3.0L?
had clutch go at 40000 had extended warranty but they would not fix it,also after major service $1100 drove home didn't bleed clutch properly all they said was, sorry about that neatly killed me.

2005 GU IV 3 litre auto - Very Happy
I bought my 2005 Patrol because of known longevity and driver satisfaction of earlier 4.2 litre patrols. I have just completed 61,000 kms of mostly urban work, no off road, no beach work; but towing a 6 metre 2 tonne boat.
I am very happy with the vehicle overall but would prefer extra grunt. I love the auto box / diesel combination, but would love an extra gear or two. I live in a very narrow culdesac and have to jump 6 gutters each time I take the boat out, this is the only time I have ever used 4 wd; to turn the boat around in my narrow cul...Read more

Excellent 4 x 4
I owned a 2003 Nissan patrol auto for about seven years. I purchased it second hand with over 300,00k on the clock and it had a new motor in it (35,00km). Apparently these models (up to 2003) with the 3L turbo diesel had a habit of the motor melting because of an over enthusiastic Australian made turbo. Hence the new motor. The vehicle is great to drive. It's powerful and takes off as quick as any sedan. It loves 4x4 driving and is tough as nails. The comfort level is great and the ride smooth. I keep my tire pressure down because I lik...Read more
e a soft ride. It's a bit thirsty but nothing out of the ball park. Around 650km to a tank. If you are thinking of a patrol I highly recommend them. Just keep changing the oil and oil filter every 10,000k and it will last for ever (provided the motor doesn't melt.) (Update Feb 2017): The transmission blew at 400,000km. Cost $9,000 (Outback prices). This vehicle doesn't like towing a heavy van (2.6 ton) through even slightly hilly terrain unless you drop back to 3rd which puts you at 3000rpm at 95kph and your fuel is down to 27L per 100km. I do not recommend this vehicle for towing heavy caravans. Very comfortable to drive. Just like a big family sedan. No jarring on soft tyers. A few more km to the litre would be good.Similar opinion? Needs changing
Nissan should think about what they have taken away from the patrol. Like with engines, when they swapped out the big powerful straight six 4.2 turbo diesel with its new and apparently more economical 3.0 whiny 4 cylinder turbo diesel. Which actually pulls less and uses more full when towing. But with the body and chassis is perfect, except that they scraped the dual cab which along with the engine is why mining companies are going to toyota to buy the more powerful improved landcruiser that offers more power and efficiency.
Good off road ability, tough and robust.
You don't try and update something while downgrading it the body is big enough give us our td4.2

2004 Datsun Patrol 3.0 Auto
I was a little concerned about a 4 cyl. engine in such a large heavy 4x4 after reading all the reports of the 3 liter being a 'hand grenade' But we have never had any problems with this Pootrol... It has seen plenty of bush work and is currently towing a 2 1/2 ton van around OZ. I change the engine oil and filter every 5000 km and do the diffs and transfer case every 20,000 km. Has done 170,000 km so far..:)

Best vehicle ever owned
I bought my 2004 GU II Patrol 3.0l auto new from a dealer. I had the extended warranty however in the five years it was under warranty the only claim was for a new key remote. When towing my 2.5t caravan I would change the oil every 5000 and the oil and filter every 10000. The vehicle has now done 222,000km is is running better than it ever has. Just did a 10,000km trip with the van on and it returned the best average towing mileage I've ever had with it. Belt tensioner pulley replaced at 200,000km, alternator at 222,000km. Great, comfort...Read more
able and capable 4x4 and I couldn't ask for more from it. reliability and looks Dealer services are excessively expensive. Will charge you $120+ for oil that you buy yourself for $60 and then charge you $5 to get rid of the old oil, $5 for rags etc etc.. Silly, pointless stuff that does nothing to give you confidence in the dealer.1 comment

Love my 2007 3.0L GU5 (Y61) Auto
I seriously wonder why people buy these cars sometimes. clearly some people dont do their due dilligence before buying a car. FYI; the Patrol is a 4x4, not an SUV. If you dont know the difference, dont buy a Patrol. (sorry I dont mean to be rude).
My Patrol has been great so far, it has 105K Kms on the clock and runs a Diesel gas setup. It has good power for towing my 16ft boat, the engine revs freely, the turbo spools early, the ride is comfy (no marks or stains on my interior), and (i think) it looks better than any other 4x4 on the ro...Read more
ad. 7 seats is handy for taking the extended family down to the murray mouth. Offroad this thing is awesome. the gearing for what i do is bang on and has never failed to make me feel confident at trying tough tracks. The solid axel up front makes it stronger than the IFS toyota equivalent, and i can go more than 2 inches of lift without replacing a bunch of parts. Serious 4x4's should be solid axels both ends! The 3.0L ZD30 got a bad wrap between 98 - 02, when the exhaust temperatures would get too hot whilst doing long distances at a constant high speed. this does not effect them from 2003 onwards. Some people say the best engine was the 4.2 Diesel, these stopped in 2004 due to emission requirements, and the petrol ones use about 18l per 100kms. the 3.0l gives the best mix of power & economy in my opinion. (and with a diesel gas system they are signifficantly more sprightly.) My negative experience is that my dash bubbled in the heat, i rang nissan and they installed a new one for me free of charge. The transmission seems slow to change gears, but you can speed this up by installing a $1 (1k) resister. see the Patrol forum for more info. Looks awesome, strong running gear, real 4x4, big, lots of accessories available, ZD30 reputation (no longer an issue), bubbling dash issue, transmission changes are slow in HR,5 comments

Mechanical failure due to mechanics/Patrol itself
Since 2009 our 2004 GU Patrol has suffered clutch replacement, two cracked heads and new injectors inserted. Dud mechanics caused motor to disintergrate on 2 occassions & eventually a new motor installed along with new turbo & other 'bits'. Total repairs around $15,000. We estimate we were without the vehicle for some 5 months ( in 2009 & 2011 ) whilst being 'repaired'. Highly recommend have the vehicle serviced at a Nissan dealer. My wife is strongly urging me to sell the car before we experience further disapointment. But now that the Patrol ...Read more

We have a 4.5ltr 1998 Patrol with all the fruit. We have been off-road, sand, mud and water, down the shops, driven around the metro area. Through-out we have had no major issues, off course you get your normal maintenance to complete but fuel economy isn't bad and off road wow

fuel consumtion
i recently bought a 1999 nissan patrol, 4.5 litre petrol...its a great vehicle, but i am disapointed with the fuel comsumtion, getting about 200klm from the reserve tank, the main is gas..90litre getting 240klm...
at the moment it costs me around $140 to completely fill and am getting 440klm...are there any 4.5 litre owners out there getting better economy ?

lts per 100kms). It does use a lot of fuel but remember its a very big car and motor. When I'm not towing the van I get about 600kms out of both tanks and that drops down to about 450kms when I am towing. Remember if you have a 90 litre gas tank, only about 80 litres are usuable. Me I would get rid of the gas, you lose power and range and it tends to burn out rings and pistons. CheersA 4wd in petrol will chew the fuel get a diesel it will be better u get more bang for your buck with diesel also water getting into electrical plugs isn't a problem either, I've heard ppl say that the petrol motors chew fuel alot
Have or make sure you gas has a full load screw fitted to vapour line to aircleaner, keep screwing it in and drive after each time till you feel it is down on power, then open back up 1/2 a turn, took mine from 200 kms gas tank to 350 to 400 kms

Nissan 3L Patrols
If you have got the money for fuel then go a V8 or a 6. If you want fuel sufficiency and still have the power then go the 3L Patrol. Put it in 4WD you will go anywhere as the gearing in the patrols is so good. It is a big cruiser not a race car and feels like sitting back in your lounge chair when travelling. I think they are a great vehicle. There are always going to be lemons in all makes and models you just have to be unlucky to get one.

Ideal all rounder!!!
My wife and I (early 20's) bought our first car together an got a 2005 3.0L st-s Patrol. we put bullbar, sliders, scrub bars, arb roof rack, spotties, UHF, dual batteries, 3" lift kit, bigger offset mag wheels, 2 1/2" exhaust, upgraded cooler, snorkel, turbo timer, boost and pyro gauges, was a bit sluggish with all the accessories but the exhaust and cooler made the difference we needed!!! Great car unstoppable within reason (not a comp truck)
230,000ks still starts runs and sound like brand new.
Reliable, great fuel Econ for a big capable car, comfortable!!!
Some people say 3.0 diesels are slow. But they really get moving for a big car with a little donk!!!

Loving our Patrol
No matter what you hear about the old 3.0 litre Diesels you can be sure Nissan got it sorted out. Sure the 3.0 engine had a terrible history but if you look close at many of the problems they were caused by neglect. These days there are more safeguard measures taken in order to reduce these. Just go and speak with someone at Nissan who knows their stuff before making up your own mind.

I have driven 4 of these over the past 6 years, each one brand new, 2x 4.2 lt and 2x 3.0 lt ST models, for work. I use the Patrol in the Alpine area of Victoria, mostly on Mountain Tracks and Roads with very little in the way of sealed roads. The car is not built for the rough life, Nissan advised me that it is designed for their best customers, urban drivers. In fact I consider that this vehicle unmodified is dangerous in the mountains

It's a 3ltr nisian there cheep to pick up Becouse there a time bomb. Some call them the (grenade) I would stay clear the running gear is all good but the engine will need serious money spent every 50 thousand km ?... Some people say they never had a problem and others go through a engine rebuild at 10 grand +++. The older patrol gu 4.2 turbo desiel 1999 to 2004 (that has not been malestered with cheep eBay parts) Hard to find that's why you still pay 20 to 30 thousand for them.
Ok thanks they want 9 for it. It is a stock standard nothing been done to it. My partner said it hasn't got much power took it for a drive around the block a couple times
Yeah I'd stay away... 3 ltr patrol was not a good thing.
But my 4.2 patrol is not built for speed it's build to pur along and get me there and back... I'm not in a rush and the speed limit is only 110 100 up where I go but off the track it's nice to feel safe and not be sliding around towing my camper..
