I need a refuelling tanker to travel behind me!
Bought a brand new auto 3l ST wagon in December '10. Great car to drive. Comfortable, great on the beach. Still doing 17l/100km after 14,000km. Complained to Nissan dealership and was told that I should expect that from the automatic. Asked why Nissan are advertising the auto at 11.8l/100km and all I got was a shrug of the shoulders. I knew it would never do what they state.....what car does apart from the BMW I also have. But can they get it within say 1.5l/100km to give us a fair chance of getting our car choice right before we pay $55k for what seems to be for me a massive mistake for my business.
Comfortable driving car.
Sluggish off the mark without really pushing it. Fuel consumption is appalling.

How we love our Patrol. Good value for money when compared to Prado. Fuel economy is excellent for a 2.5 tonne vehicle. We consistently get 10-11 l/100k. Mix of city and hwy driving. Excellent tourque for overtaking and towing. Very good off road. Lots of room in the back. We upgraded the suspension to ARB Old Man Emu springs and shocks. As the original Nissan suspension was beginning to sag, particularly at the front. It was not designed to take the weight of the steel bull bar. Handles very well on and off road now and quite comfortable for a...Read more
4x4. Our Patrol has the added safety pack consisting of ABS and dual Airbags. ABS is definatley a great help pulling up a 2.5tonne unit on a gravel or wet road. Apparently there were problems with the GUII model (2.8Turbo Diesel) piston dramas??. We have not had a single drama with our beloved Patrol after buying it used 2 yrs ago. DIESEL MODEL. 3L Turbo GU III. Great Fuel Economy considering size. Excellent power. Lots of space. EXCELLENT OFF ROAD!! How we love our Patrol. Nothing really.1 comment
what model patrol was this if you don't mind me asking? also do you still have it and are you still happy with it if you do?

we do a lot of long distance driving, we take it off road to go camping etc and must say it has done us proud, the only extras we have on it are - camping draws, cargo barrier, long range fuel tank, 2 inch lift and uhf, we will own this patrol for life and because its a diesel, its built to last
if there was any bad thing to say about this 4x4 and i don`t dislike it but can be a little slugish on take off until the turbo kicks in but we are used to it and not a problem to us.
the space, the fuel consumption, the ease of driving, the best thing we ever did was buy this 4x4, it tows really well, been no real problems with it just general maintenance

We've had our Nissan Patrol for seven years now, and the only reason we've ever taken it to the repair shop is for road rage that wasn't our fault (you should have seen the other guy. This car is BIG.) It's never broken down, never needed tyres replaced. It's like an invincible car that just goes and goes and goes. It's big, yes, but it has space to spare and is brilliant for the active family, with camping, canoeing etc. I highly recommend this car and it is one of Nissan's finest jobs.
Lasts forever, strongly built, brilliant for four wheel driving or a large family.
Hard to handle if you're used to small cars.

Its a truck. Goes anywhere but not in a straight line
Solid reliable work vehicle that is well suited to my job. Handling is truly terrible and it will bounce across the road when hitting pot holes at any speed. Hit rough patches a or bitumen and it will change lanes all on its own!
The engine power is hopeless for towing. i don't know where they get the 3.2 t towing capacity from.
Best thing is at it has a decent seating position and is comfortable with adequate head room for someone who is 6'3"
I have done 300,000 km with the following repairs:

dont drive one unless you are going to buy it
This is my third new Patrol. Look I know they aren't perfect, but they ride better than a Landcruiser. They are a delight to drive. I test drove every darned 4x4 then my wife insisted on trying a Patrol - you already know what I bought. Now I'm not allowed any car other than a Patrol. Just wait till you drive it. You'll end up driving it home. But be warned they cut every corner they can to keep the price down.
Driving it. Off road it will go everywhere.
Only has a single reversing light. That is penny pinching to the extreme!!!

the drive line in these patrols i cannot fault and especially loved the automatic hub system offered on the st 4.8 manual. The sub tank system is a good idea with the petrols as they are extremely thirsty and long trips need to be planned well as there range is more limited compared to the diesels. The patrols are a heavy wagon and coupled with soft tires can wear through a set pretty quickly if driven hard(especially the fronts).Ride is brilliant due to the coil suspension but will squirm on the rear springs when lumped with a heavy trailer n...Read more
ear its tow capacity. The brakes are adiquit but pushed with some spirited driving or a heavy load can quickly become very ordinary. Major servicing can be a expensive adventure due to the hub arrangement but otherwise not to much different to a comparitable 4 wheel drive. a very capable vehicle in the bush and on the road but if i was buy another it would be a diesel ride comfort, power, reliability, interior ergonomics, looks, 4 wheel drive ability high fuel consumption, high dealership servicing costs, parking visibility, braking powerSimilar opinion? Nissan Patrol ST 2011 Rusting despite electronic Rust proofing unit fitted
Nissan Patrol ST 2011 Rusting around Nissan fitted driving lights despite electronic Rust proofing unit fitted, Dealer has taken photo's for warranty claim but my past experience regarding Nissan, i don't hold much hope. The car was less than twelve months old before it started rusting and the vehicle has never been on a beach or near the salt water. More over it spends more time on the New England tablelands of NSW where nothing seems to rust.
Obviously the Nissan accessories need better quality control

I have a 2006, 3.0 ltr man Patrol that I have been using to pull a 23ft/2500kg van around Aus. The Patrol has just hit the 300,000 km mark and other than routine servicing is has not been touched. I have decided to do the injectors and brakes before heading off on the next trip on the advice of the dealer, but other than that he indicated compression was still good and there were no other issues. All but the first 15,000 km have been travelled with the van on the back, we cruise at around 95kmh and the patrol does it with ease although can find...Read more
the going a bit tough on hills but nevertheless it gets there. I previously had a Toyota cruiser from new which was a great vehicle for the first 150,000km and then the cost of keeping it on the road got beyond me. Great vehicle, Could do with a little more grunt1 comment
Am considering changing my GQ for a later model GU. Will be towing a 1.5T camper sometimes.

Love it, when I get another 100,000 k's on it I might consider upgrading to a 2009 model. I've had Pajeros and Land Cruisers and boy don't they have some issues, but this Patrol takes the cake.
Plenty of grunt when you need it and good fuel economy, drove from melbourne to brisbane and got 1200k's before refuelling. Super Smooth ride with the coil springs, Done 280,000 k's and still going as good as the day I bought it. Done 2 trips around Australia and getting ready for another one.
Wish the ST had Cruise Control, Drivers seat could slide backwards more due to my long legs.

Should have those tech teams who designed these models fired!! I think my next 4x4 will be a Toyota Landcruiser/Lexus LX570....No more NISSAN for me that's for sure mate. Never again will I buy a Nissan, I've had other Nissans before and believed that the patrol would be a good reliable 4wd, I was saddly mistaken. $55000 dollar lemon.
Appearance of patrol is a good, rugged 4wd.
ever since purchasing I have non- stop problems, bubbled dash, which nissan will not replace. few bubbles just before warrenty runout, did not think anything of it, know better now. pulley bearing, oil switch, Alternator died replaced, now 14 mths later another alternator dead only travelled 11000kms since replacement. to scared to take car bush as something else will go wrong. Problem with driver door not unlocking with remote, few other problems.

I wont be doing this again! Anyone thinking of this vehicle, take a very close look at the points I've raised. And another thing to do if you do find you have to have one; make sure you have a wheel and tyre exchange written into your contract! The flash looking alloys look great cutting a lap around town, but are bloody useless off road. I have damaged mine first trip out! About 40k's of 4wd work! At $700 per rim, it brings a tear to the eye believe me. I fought long and hard over those rims, believing I could exchange them off another model. ...Read more
Eventually even trying to get out of the contract. Like the old saying says about carsalemen and real estate agents? Do your home work on this one! I have had my GU IV 3.0 for 5500km. And Im struggling to find the good points! Its a good looker? It does cruise quite nicely at highway speeds. The engine seems to enjoy the revs, and it needs to, its doing 2800 at 100km. The motor and gearing are all wrong. At least if you are planning montain work or rugged creek crossings. It simply wont crawl without stalling . And as the torque does'nt kick in till 1800-2000 rpm, it leaves you riding the clutch to avoid bouncing over large rocks and damaging the vehicle? I drove a 4.2 at the weekend, its an improvement torque wise, but still too tall in low range. I owned a hilux before the Patrol, if you plan to do most of your 4wd work in the hills, buy a pre 05" Hilux. I hear the Cruzer is simarly well geared. My other issue is storage, small item I mean. Where the hell is it? Door pockets are crap, the glove box would store about two pairs of ladies gloves and thats all...maybe a third pair perhaps? The aircraft style trays behind the front seats stop me from storing the melways!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Had an 80 Series Petrol/LPG Cruiser, and never got a good days work out of the engine. Had a few friends that bought Petrol Patrols and loved them, one had a Discovery 1st. So bought the 4.8 and put it on LPG. Have done nearly 100,000km and haven't even had to change the Brake Pads. Apart from regular servicing which has only ever cost around $200.00 this car has been the bomb, on and off road. Maybe I have been lucky, but we go on a 4WD holiday at least twice a year, and have spent plenty of time pulling Tojos out of the bog. This was th...Read more
e wifes car, but she just bought a smaller Jeep Cherokee CRD, and it's brilliant. Can't justify $60 Grand on a Comander, so I will be looking to the Patrol CRD when I upgrade. LPG's good, but still expensive by comparison, but then I never bought a 4.8L car with economy in mind. I put in a DVD and the best most comfortable tourer I could afford, and I am not complaining one bit!! If Nissan drop the Patrol range they'll lose me as a customer. Smooth and Grunt, switch to Petrol, and you'll lose the Falcons & Commodores. Can't really say I have any. Will only sell because of the KM's.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

buy the 4.2ltr turbo diesel and u wont be dissapointed......ive seen my mechancis install a number of brunswick 6.5 ltr turbo deisel motors where the 3ltr nissan donk once lived....you have been warned, and good luck with it folks
dont own one, but some free advice, and no i dont own a toyota...
as ive seen with many peeps, the 3ltr versions of this model are a grenade waiting to happen.....the 3ltr motor does not like towing heavy loads over long distances (ie boat) and will blow.........the have to work/rev hard to make horsepower and seem to die a quick death, unfortunatly.

I own a 1999 model patrol 2.8 litre partol, for the size of the car and the size of the engine it is simply GUTLESS! second owner of the car and im happy with it but not happy with its power output.
Great on fuel, suspension doesnt sag with a load in the back, a comfortable car to drive, very stable and tough on the highway, easy to do modifications
THE POWER! 2.8 Litre 6cyl, the smallest 6cyl engine you can get! take off power is shocking but it pulls along fine in top gear, really have to rev it through the gears (about 3000-3500rpm) to get a take off speed. only in manual transmission, blows alot of smoke and can only do a hill start in 4WD!

We love our Nissan, we do a lot of heavy towing with ours; cattle, machinery, horses, hay etc and it always performs well. A bit slow in first gear on take off, but really tows well and is reliable and stable. We lost a wheel off a NEW trailer on a bend at 110km and the car did not shift at all. Very very safe and has never let us down. You really wouldn't know this car is a 4 cylinder.
Stability and power when towing, smooth and quiet ride, looks nice, easy to drive with a good turning circle and easy to park.Turbo is great, fuel consumption quite good (3.0L engine)
Difficult to see trailer when backing; back doors obstruct view. Sluggish in first gear on take off.

Dissapointing. Fuel consumption seems to average around 16 to 18 Ltrs/100 (our V8 Cruiser Utes seem to average around 18 to 20 Ltrs/100) so its marginally better in station country. Thought it would be easier to fix than the new V8 Touyota's but we havent got on well with the Nissans electrics. I think reliabilty is everything in the bush and these two purchased new in 11/07 have not been.

Overall it's a great car. The turbo diesel is made to go with an auto transmission and I would never go back to a manual unless it was a petrol. Great to tow a camper trailer or van up to 18 foot with....feels very stable. Once it gets near 30,000kms on the clock the economy really improves.
Patrol GU3, 3.0ltr auto. Great 3.0ltr turbo diesel engine. Looks good, cruises nice, comfortable, reasonable finish.
Needs a transmission lock when towing to stop the "hunting" between gears. Aftermarket one fixed that. GU3 model had no rear power outlet. Factory floor mats are cheap quality.

It's a 3ltr nisian there cheep to pick up Becouse there a time bomb. Some call them the (grenade) I would stay clear the running gear is all good but the engine will need serious money spent every 50 thousand km ?... Some people say they never had a problem and others go through a engine rebuild at 10 grand +++. The older patrol gu 4.2 turbo desiel 1999 to 2004 (that has not been malestered with cheep eBay parts) Hard to find that's why you still pay 20 to 30 thousand for them.
Ok thanks they want 9 for it. It is a stock standard nothing been done to it. My partner said it hasn't got much power took it for a drive around the block a couple times
Yeah I'd stay away... 3 ltr patrol was not a good thing.
But my 4.2 patrol is not built for speed it's build to pur along and get me there and back... I'm not in a rush and the speed limit is only 110 100 up where I go but off the track it's nice to feel safe and not be sliding around towing my camper..
