Unfortunately the ZD30 engine isn't the most powerful engine for a heavy car. However you should need to go below 4th for a hill. Sounds like something is blocked. Would recommended checking the air filter, getting a service. Make sure when you see the hill coming you downshift before you get to the hill to allow the engine to maintain a higher rev to get you up the hill. Also worth maybe running some BP Ultimate Diesel through it for a few tanks, as well as some diesel doctor fluid.
There's a FB group ZD Warriors that will be able to answer your more technical questions better then i can.

I would check the injectors and if you intend towing a van it may pay to have the radiator checked. With that many Km's on such a late model most critics will tell you it has just been run in..

I have a 1999 Gu 4.2 turbo and want to know do you have to change the oil filters every 10,000klms?

The 4.2 turbo has a bullet proof reputation that is a much sought after patrol that commands a premium price even though the the motor was discontinued after 2006.Nissan servicing is engine & filters change at 10,000klms. If It was my vehicle the oil and filters would be changed every 5000klms. Cheap insurance for the longevity that motor is noted for. I dare say there would be more than enough owners that would do the same.

I had a 1988 gq swb, changed oil every 5000ks, also both oil filters, fuel filter twice a year, air filter, was a oil type, wash and reoil type, done every oil change, I used the cheapest 15/40 oil i could find, the oil filters were a chinese brand and cost $3.68 each.
The swb had 133,000 on clock when i bought it, and when sold had 840,000ks on clock, the only repairs it ever had was new radiator, shocks, wheel bearings, tyres etc. I think besides the regular servicing done by self, i lived in Mt Magnet, and to go almost anywhere wS a 600k return trip.

Do the y62 motor come in 3lt common rail?

The Y62 patrol is a V8 petrol motor. No more Y61's made, end of an era.

Trent N

The 3lt no longer meets emissions regulations this is why the y61 is no longer in production. The y62 has only had the 5.6lt engine

Pezz 625
Pezz 625

No, only cones in the 5.6 petrol V8 variant but many reports from current owners that used to own the 3lt, are that the new 5.6 V8 uses less fuel than their 3lt diesel.

Hi everyone, has anyone any shaking, shuddering, wobbling problems at speed of 100 / km plus with their Patrol. Thanks

That seems like a serious problem which is usually caused by the seat sway bars though, the most likely best course of action is to take the vehicle to a Nissan Australia workshop or a reasonable mechanical repairs and servicing workshop to diagnose and repair the fault

Most problems starting are usually caused by the alternator or the starter motor though, I'd recommend firstly looking at the battery and possibly having a new battery for the engine otherwise you may have to take the vehicle to a Nissan Australia workshop or a reasonable mechanical repairs and servicing workshop or the problem with the electrics then perhaps a auto electrician might be able to help

Hi All... I need some advice .......I have a 1997 GQ Nissan Patrol, 4.2 Diesel.. I have had it from brand new and kept service up as regular . What I have noticed latterly is that I am starting to burn some oil, and at times my diesel gauge drops from 4 down to 1 .. than after a while goes back to 4 ... this is while running ..is this a diesel pump problem or an Injector prob... I have to admit it has done 345,000 klms and the injectors are still original.. do I have them replaced etc and roughly what would be the cost?
As I am not mechanically minded I would appreciate some advice .. Thank you all... Dicko

If you don't really know what you're doing mechanical wise then it's probably better to take the vehicle to a Nissan Australia workshop or perhaps a diesel engine specialist

Then perhaps you should buy some new wheels and tyres from the tyres shop - they'll place align and balance though, be aware it won't be cheap as it'll likely be 200 to 250 dollars for each tyre plus labour costs though, a mechanical experienced person should be able to pick the problem or the noise could be coming from the braking system

Has anybody had trouble with AT overheat light on a 2004 Nissan patrol ZD30, transmission oil is good, currently sitting in driveway so not overheating, could it just be the sensor?

1 answer
steve lloyd
steve lloyd

To start with, ensure your sensor is connected. These will default to the 'overtemp' light on if the connection is lost. This is nissan's way of letting you know there is a problem.
Next, inspect the wiring harness for damage or corrosion before you blame the sensor. Hope this id helpful

I have a GQ 1988 Patrol 4.2 petrol. It also runs on gas. 60 litre petrol and 70 litre gas.. combined 130 litres. I honestly am only getting 500ks for both tanks combined. Engine runs fine. No issues. Why do I have such poor fuel economy?

It's a 4 wheel drive - that doesn't seem excessive to me though, if you're still concerned you have the option of contacting Nissan Australia or a mechanic

TPS - throttle position sensor is a strong possibility. Get your car scan-guaged and this should highlight an error code which will confirm the TPS or harness related issue. Hope this helps

If im stationary, and need to take off between lines of traffic, i put the auto into first, works a treat, or just use very little throttle, until tyres start to roll, then give it throtle, no turbo lag. I also found, changing the auto filter to a competion one and filling the trasmission with really top oil, the best oil you can afford about $194, The auto is a whole new animal

I just bought a nissan patrol though a private sale that came with a rwc, turns out its not roadworthy and has multiple things that are u Roadyworthy and costly to repair. What action can I take on this?

2 answers
Tagheuer
Tagheuer

First port of call is get another RWC from someone reputable like an RACV in victoria or equivalent in your state.. Then compare this to what was done in the original RWC. This way you can compare and go back to the original RWC workshop and ask the questions. If they are not willing to come to the party and fix something that they should of originally then. You mention to them you will take this to consumer affairs in your state and ask the question why they did not fix this when they should of and how the vehicle received a RWC. You will find 9 out 10 come to the party and are happy to fix problems as not to go down that path in fear of not losing their license.
Ask the question of the workshop you are getting the 2nd roadworthy should they of done this as part of the original repair before issuing a RWC. THEY should be able to tell you if it should of been issued a RWC before money changed hands.
Unfortunately when buying cars its a "Buyer be ware" principle. There are a lot of sharks out there.

Firstly, You would have to find out if the Engine Mounts are the same. I would say its possible. Secondly, if its Petrol or Diesel? I had a 2002 STL Series III 3.0 Ltr diesel built 3rd qtr. Meaning it had the design changed Deepend Sump. Not head issues like the first Generation Diesel. I have sold that vehicle now. Cheers!

Its lost compression. It would need a Mechanical check and a compression check. Depending on how many Kms its done maybe its mileage has finally taken its toll on the motor. Or the Turbo is on the way out!

Tagheuer has the answer i think as the turbo should make the motor kick back and work like it should and be careful because those direct injection motors are the ones that gave a bit of trouble

I am enquiring for my son into the reliability of the new Nissan Patrol Diesel. I know it is the old GU Shape. We both had early Patrols that result in the Hand grenade problem. Can anyone give me CONSTRUCTIVE comment of the latest Patrol. Do they suffer the same Hand Grenade symptoms or have they fixed that. Does anyone have one and let me know their experiences. I'm not interest in the pre 2007 models.

I have a 2002 ZD30 Diesel 3.0ltr. The Pre 2002 had a problem where the oil sump was not deep enough to hold the necessary amount of oil to lubricate to the head of the motor properly. thats why they were having head issues. My model July 2002 + the problem was resolved. The Hand Grenade symptoms I never heard about until recently. But yet again I never had any need to find out because my motor has never missed a beat. Long Live the 3.0ltr Turbos. I Love'm. More economical than any other Patrol model to date and has the towing capacity of 2500kg-2700kg braking. I am currently looking to sell it.Upgrading to a European SUV model. If you are interested my car is on Carssales and CarsGuide. Its the Pewter Grey. with 112,000kms on the clock. With up to date books and Roadworthy certificate. 1 Owner. Cheers!
