I am wondering why there was no answer to the question on stepping through channels for the review entitled 'fundamentally flawed'.
Point 1 was that you cannot step between tv channels only.... because all channels including radio are in the same list.

This device, like all previous panasonic DVRs for many years now, allows you to build your own channels lists, which allows a list of all tv channels as Denis wanted, or even better, allowing to have list that also removed duplicate channels. See P71 of the manual. This means a list without having both the HD and SD of the same program is possible. Or perhaps also remove other channels you never watch? then you can change between your favourites channel list and the 'all digital channels' list if wish to try one of the those channels not on your own list.

So this is not a question, more of an answer.
As for a question....when is an update coming? I have a 955 in one room and a 945 in another. Both of these older models had triple tuners and in some ways the UBT1GL-K seems a step back to the old dual tuner models.

I thought either bluetooth or via the HDMI connection to HTPC but the Panasonic locked up for a few minutes. My router is far from lounge room but wifi receiver connects HTPC, not sure if PVR has blue tooth.

Hi Am looking at buying a panasonic bluray player / recorder either DMR-BMT1G4K or DMR-BWT955GL. It is not clear what the major differences are except for 3 tuners in the 955. Also is it definitely true Panasonic will change the the units to Multi Zone for DVD playback but this does not include BluRay discs. Finally I am upgrading from an old DMR-BWT800 where the DVD disc player has failed. I like the editing features of this unit. Is the editing the same for the newer models
Thanks

The differences might be the size of the hard drive or whether it has blu-ray or ultra 4K player. I think blu-ray is multi regional anyway, I don't know about multi zone DVD thing. Some futures are different. I know someone who has an older model than the one I had, they have no problems with it. Where mine is fully out of the box, don't trust Panasonic, once bitten twice shy. I also think the remote is small and crowded. It has no eject button or volume control for the PVR. If you do decide to buy one keep your receipt! And if like Harvey Norman they offer to E-mail you a copy of the receipt, do it, just for make sure you have a copy somewhere if you need to take it back.

Probably a silly question, but can this unit be connected to a foxtel box to transfer recorded programs to blank dvd?

By USB stick.

Thanks Jason, on further research, as this model doesn’t have rca inputs, you cant record direct from foxtel to dvd with this model, as is my understanding. Will stick with my dinosaur model, thanks for your input nonetheless!

Greetings All - Regarding the DMR-UBT1GL-K ... Can anyone recommend a 3TB external desk top Hard Disc Drive (with its own power supply) that is compatible with this unit?

The only info I could get about this is:
Certain non-recommended USB HDDs cannot be used with this unit (page 33 of the unit manual). USB HDDs with a capacity smaller than 160 GB or greater than 3 TB cannot be used. This unit does not recognize USB HDDs other than those in which the size of one sector is 512-bytes or 4096-bytes.

This looks to be the same requirement as for their TVs. I have been using the Seagate3TB Expansion Desktop HDD. I bought mine at OfficeWorks but they now only appear to have the larger models. The Good Guys claim to have them at some of their Melbourne stores.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my query = very much appreciated. I've also just found another contender = Western Digital - WD Elements 3TB (WDBWLG0030HBK-AESN). The 3TB animals seem to be getting hard to find.

Hi William, you are not able to record Netflix or an internet catch up service. Netflix will not allow you to record onto an external device. The recorder will allow you to record free to air TV, your own content from your cameras or SD card or USB device.

Hi AusT, yes you will need to have this feature unlocked to be able to play all region DVD's.

Why on earth did the Pana Rep say that posting by Denis was "definitely useful information for Panasonic". The information on setting up a Favourites List (which then forms your Electronic program Guide - and can be edited at will later) is under 'Basic Settings' (get that - **basic**!) on p. 71 of the Eser Manual under 'Digital TV Tuning'. My goodness - how difficult must that be to fathom?! Unforgivably poor is the comment offered by the Pana Rep who dealt with the query as they, of all people, are expected to offer clear and precise answers. Users are (I think) allowed to get a bit phased with all the complexity of today's products, wonderful though they may be.

I think she was acknowledging that the product is fatally flawed by poor design, and my experience is not just “user error” caused by me not reading the manual.

Really? Then why would you have gone on and on about how trawling through innumerable radio 'channels' and other unwanted TV channels; and presented this as part of it being fatally flawed? I wonder? I was trying very hard to be easy on the person with the difficulties and offered a precise and easy solution which involves actually reading the product guide - anyone who had would not have the problem of which you complained - its just that simple I'm afraid. But never mind, some people just cannot be helped I guess.

I agree with Jason T. The Panasonic Representative needed to communicate how a Favourites List can be created. The Panasonic Rep. could also have communicated the many positives associated with this Blu Ray recorder. I ended up buying this recorder despite reading the negative review above beforehand. I do not find the open/close and power controls on the top surface of the player to be so much of a problem. It really is just a matter of awareness of where these sensors are which gets easily resolved after a couple of attempts locating them. The sensors are identified on the top of player which may be difficult to see and touch when stored in a dark cabinet, but I have experienced no such problem after a couple of attempts locating them.

There is plenty going for the DMR-UBT1GL-K to counteract the perceived negatives experienced by Denis - negatives that could have been resolved quickly by reading the User Manual. I usually have no faith whatsoever in User Manuals these days but this one is meaningful. It is ALL in ENGLISH and helpful on many technical fronts. Designed to assist overcoming the many technical hurdles associated with synchronising this multi functional device within your existing system. It does get complex and this is a hurdle, but the User Manual is far better than any manual associated with a technical product I have purchased in the last 10 odd years. It makes getting the technical glitches eventually resolved if they can be resolved. Most of my technical issues have been resolved - so far.

YES I firmly agree that it is very easy to get phased by the complex nature of modern day electronic products like the DMR-UBT1GL-K. I bought this model three days ago and am slowly getting used to all its capabilities. The picture, functionality and sound are excellent. These are what initially won me over after experiencing the negative fact that Panasonic has enforced the inability to copy music from CD's onto the hard drive. This is a very major deceptive flaw associated with the advertising and salesmanship of this product that I was highly disappointed about. I let Panasonic know this loud and clear. Almost sent it back due to being misinformed of able to store all my CD music collection on the hard drive. I am slowly becoming aware that this is not so much of a problem due to the DLNA functionality that reads all video/audio content stored on devices like a laptop, or reading by USB from an external disk. The inability to copy music files directly from CD onto the DMR-UBT1GL-K hard rive is a disgrace though. Buying into the global Corporate control of so called copyright when you have already purchased the CD products and simply want better access to them. Better access offered by compact disk burners/copiers that cost about $40.00 but not available on this highly advanced DMR-UBT1GL-K. This is definitely a global based Corporate deception to *regulate and enforce* control upon what can be heard or viewed. Panasonic has bought into this deception which is highly disappointing and a disgrace. Detest this *regulated and enforced* monopolised control absolutely and making it known here.

Will get around to a full review later on the DMR-UBT1GL-K. Still sorting out some Miracast issues integrating with my overall system. Have found the Panasonic technical support and customer relations people to be helpful so far. Definitely the DMR-UBT1GL-K has a lot going for it that counteract the negatives experienced by those who do not want to explore its overall capabilities.
