After 5 hours of too-hard work - not bad at all.
It's the motor, it's the motor, it's the motor. I looked long and hard at a Masport 3-in-1 - almost the same price. Frankly - the Masport was better 6 ways out of 10, particularly in design and ease of use - but a 140cc versus a 190cc for my requirement ...
Aside: (Really, the best solution for me would be a Deutsche, [I'm cutting Phalaris Grass, sometimes over 1m high] but they're five times the price new, and even 30-year-old ones are sold for twice the price)(!)
...for my requirement, I needed some oomph. The Subaru-powered Ryobi has t...Read more

Cheap & nasty with plenty of power
This mower was a replacement for an underpowered Masport purchased from Bunnings, the Masport was a great, high quality product but simply underpowered. This Ryobi has also gone back. This screamed cheap & nasty as soon as I opened the box from the cheap bolts used to bolt the handle together (who bolts handles together these days? use camlocks...) to the lack of design which places the fuel tap (why?), the primer and the wash out attachment directly under/behind the height adjustment bar making every action difficult and awkward. Don't believe...Read more
the box that says this is a mulcher mower, it is not, it does not mulch the grass at all and leaves it sitting on top to dry, brown off and make your lawn look like rubbish, a good mulcher mower cuts the lawn into small pieces and blows it down into your lawn, this means you have to use the catcher which is where you discover it doesn't actually fit without bending it a little, oh!, and it simply hooks over the flap hinge bar. When you have to empty the catcher it leaves more grass on your lawn and on you as it blows straight up in your face than in your catcher (please don't tell me to turn the mower off when emptying the catcher, this would mean 36 restarts for the backyard alone). it is an 18 inch cut instead of a 19 and also does not cut edge to edge which for me means 18 laps of my backyard instead of 15 with a 19 inch cut. Lack of edge to edge means that you can only cut your lawn in 1 direction unless you want a strip unmowed. Everything about this is cheap except for the engine itself, this is a real powerful and smooth engine, its just a shame about the rest of it, if all you need is power with no other nice to haves then this might do. This was replaced with a Honda powered Victa.

Heavy, sacrifice weight for power
I will never cut wet grass so I have no idea about that. My 9yr old Aldi Mower has died so I got the Ryobi 190 after reading the reviews. I don't have lawn, just 600sqm grass on a rural house block.
Some of my grass was 30-40cm high. The Ryobi 190 powered through that (mulcher mode) without barely breaking a sweat. The mowed area looked good too. I will keep the grass lower now I have a decent mower. It took a bit of stuffing around to learn how to get the catcher on/off, and the mulch plug on/off. All good now.
The mower is heavy so ...Read more
more effort to move around than my old Aldi mower, but once you are cutting it seems very smooth and effortless. The hose clean socket is a bit fiddly to access, but I use it after every mow. My grass now looks like lawn. I'm a happy camper!

Great mower with great torque
This Ryobi mower with Subaru engine always starts first or second pull. The torque of the engine in long grass is excellent. You think the engine is going to stall and it just keeps going. The mulching plug in association with the 4 blades mulches the grass better than any other mower have owned. My next door neighbours on both sides now own Ryobi mowers they were so impressed at how well the engine performed in long grass and easy starting. Would prefer a snorkel air filter to the air filter on the motor. Would happily recommend this Ryobi Subaru 190cc powered mower.

Awesome mower
This has to be the best mower I have ever owned. I have had this for about 16 months. It has a commercial grade Subaru industrial engine so it has heaps of power. Even cutting thick lush kikuyu grass it powers through no trouble. The mower is heavier than other similar machines and could be hard work on a steep section but mine is all flat so no problems. It starts first pull usually and never misses a beat and seems to run a long time on a tank of petrol. I changed the oil after about a year and it was still very clean. You can find a workshop manual online if you search for Subaru 190 cc industrial engine.

Best mower I've used
She starts on first pull mostly, odd occasion it took a second. I love the steel height adjustment as it holds its place no matter how bumpy the ground is. I've used Masport, Victa and Morrison mowers that have plastic height adjustment which often bounced out of its slot on bumpy ground and have worn down over time. It's grunty and cuts almost anything. Especially good on very long grass. Mulched and cuts well and has a good catcher too. Given it is a 190cc, I was pleased with fuel consumption as it has similar to any other mower I've used before. I was also surprised that it's not loud at all. It's no louder than any other mower. Overall, I have to say it made mowing so much easier than ever before.

Good so far but some caveats...
I needed a mower to cut thick kikuyu grass.
Over the last 30 years I've used various Victas/Rovers/Hondas but their standard home 3.5HP models all struggled with this grass when it was longer than normal.
This mower doesn't, on 3/4 throttle it hardly makes the governor kick in. I selected this mower for this reason and am happy with the results so far and it has never taken more than 2 pulls to start.
However:
1) It is quite a bit heavier than other mowers I've used (I suspect a combination of heavier motor and thicker steel deck, long ...Read more

Terrible
Won't go after 4 uses. Checked everything & replaced spark plug. Bunnings solution - I buy the $725 key start mower. Not impressed with the mower or bunnings service. It's now sitting in my shed propping up my garden tools and gathering dust. Waste of money this mower was - would I recommend it? No.

Don't buy Ryobi Mowers !!!!
After 8 months, mower # 1 fell apart … wheels and axels ! Mower # 2…after 6 months won't work (petrol leaking into air filter !). Ryobi and Bunnings don't want to know about it. Paid top dollar for a reliable mower and got rubbish ! Seriously …. WOULD NEVER BUY A RYOBI MOWER EVER AGAIN !!!!

Love it
She cuts well - mulches well - not had much experience with the catcher as mulching suits better on our rough track.
Can't understand the 'hard to push; remarks as my mower is self-propelled and does it adequately but grounds out at times on our uncultured 'lawn'. Handle appears to be too long at first making sharp turns a time for nifty footwork. Seems heavy but I will take that for the solid feel and powerful motor.
Relatively easy to operate when set up properly. Mine came with drive to the wheels engaged at all times making it dangerous t...Read more

Solid, reliable... heavy
I use this mower to cut grass for some income. I cut about 2 lawns a week. Here are my impressions after 2 years of use:
Pluses
- Strong engine can cope with thick grass without too much trouble and without the engine slowing down significantly. It just powers through fairly reliably.
- Reliable engine. With regular maintenance (spark plug and air filter replacements, blade sharpening) it has never let me down.
- Always turns on without trouble. Usually after 2 pulls.
- In dry grass the catcher fills right up beautifully from the back to the brim.
Negatives
- Fairly heavy compared to other mowers I've used, so mowing uphill really takes its toll (great exercise though!).

So far so good
Only bought and used the first time today!
The mower cuts grass well, has plenty of power, is easy to start and once you adjust the handle length is fairly manoeuvrable. The only difficulty I've noticed is the front of the mower seems to sometimes dig into the upcoming grass if its a bit wet/long (when the deck is low and the grass is high). Once you lift the nose a little (or adjust the deck height) the engine has plenty of oomph to power through.
I haven't found the catcher to be a problem. Yes it does hinge at the top rather than the bot...Read more
tom, but it is attached at the top via hooks and if you simply lift the catcher by the front (closest to the mower) it unhooks easily and doesn't tip out much grass at all. I'm most happy that it doesn't slip off with bumps like the Honda I was using previously.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Good first impression on first use
I have a large block with paddock grass/weeds a lot was over a foot tall after my 450 series B&S died, I went for this mower for the 190cc engine over my old 148cc mower. Assy was straight forward and I used 5w-30 fully synthetic castrol edge oil as i had some already and it was compatible. it started first shot on 91 ron fuel, I started slowly to tackle the jungle and it proved up to the job, I filled 6 catcher loads in a short time, I will use the mulcher on the rest. I don't find it heavy even my 6 yo son pushed it. I found the catcher a li...Read more
ttle fiddly to hook on being different to my old masport. I tried the hose fitting to wash and fitted easy enough. As far as cutting damp grass it cut well a day after 30mm of rain. 3 yr update.. Mower still going strong only issue the cord recoil starter has packed up and not pulling the cord back in. I pulled it apart to manually wind it up and starts first shot, looking to get a new part.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Very Good Mower
Have purchased this mower a few months back. and must say I can not fault it. Easy to put together, easy to get mulch plug in and out, easy to clean. Does an excellent job on catching the grass as well as mulching. The mower thanks to the Subaru engine just powers through long thick grass. I found this mower easy to maneuver and handle. Have read some very negative reviews on here, but if you follow the directions and all warning tags and labels on the mower prior to starting you will have no problems.

Leave it Alone
A very nice looking machine but looks aren't everything! Extremely heavy and not suitable for anything other than large lawns. Vibrations after only four cuts causes the handle securing knobs to shake loose. Very poor cutting on damp grass - the grass looks butchered. Damp grass doesn't collect in the grass box. The so called cleaning mechanism - hose attachment - doesn't work and the machine is too heavy to lift to scrape away the grass from underneath. Not easy to keep clean, not easy to manoeuvre. This mower replaced a Mountfield with a briggs and Stratton engine which was used over 6 seasons. In future I'll stick to that make. Really disappointed.

I am very pleased with the mower but a serious look at what I suggest is needed.
I am a mower engineer and the Subaru engine is an excellent product and most aspects of the Ryobi frame are good except for the fact that the back of the mower is 13mm higher than the front, This is the main reason why so much dust is been blown out from under the metal work of the mower and causing the filter cartridge to become saturated in dust. Either new front wheels with an increased diameter of 26mm or the rear wheels need to have a reduced diameter of 26mm or an extension to the front of the height adjustment arm that connects back to t...Read more
he rear axle is needed to be implemented. A lot of dust is ejected from the catcher that is expected from such a powerful engine but future models should be fitted with a snorkel attached to the air intake of the carburetor and attached higher up on the mower handles.Similar opinion? The Good, The bad, The Ugly.
Purchased 3 years ago from Bunnings. Looked at many in this price range and the Ryobi won me over with the Subaru engine and robust steel deck.
The Good - Has done what I purchased it to do on a 160m2 lawn 26 times a year. Has handled heavy grass well and never stalled on me. Has always started fairly easily after one or two pulls. Don't find it too heavy as kids use it.
The Bad - Catcher capacity, mulching plug fitting, dust bypass from catcher, throttle cable crimping, throttle cable dislocates from carby and needs cable ties to hold in...Read more
place, chews through blades but that could just be the cheap blades I buy. The Ugly - It has a 190cc Subaru engine, so naturally I thought good quality based on my prior experience of Subaru small engines on industrial tools. Well only 3 years on and with regular maintenance and the engine is dead, blown rings with no compression or a valve seat according to the mower shop. In Summary - It's a nicely packaged product that looked to offer good performance with a supposed quality engine. In general when running it did a good job and lived up to that expectation, however has failed miserably on longevity. Checked choice reviews and this mower gets a very high score of 84% overall, based on that and for the money it would be a no brainer except that Choice do not, and can not take into account longevity.Similar opinion? Not worth it at all
Started shaking after 3rd use checked blades to find they had come loose i could have been seriously injured be warned this product is all marketing if you want a decent lawnmower stick to a reputable yard equipment brand these guys make power tools they should have kept it that way

I'm dealing with this to mate. Such a temperamental motor. Loves to back fire now as well.
I have just solved this problem with a replacement spark plug. Had checked timing key, tappet settings, cleaned carburettor, checked spark plug, still hard to start and back firing. I replaced the spark plug and problem solved. Just guessing, I assume the plug malfunctioned under compression pressure which I understand can happen. Hope this helps.

I thought I would do a tune up on it removed the rocker cover and reset the valve clearances as they had closed up . I found the settings online and readjusted them. Then i removed the spark plug and cleaned it and finally I removed the carburettor and removed the float bowl and blew out all the jets and orifices with compressed air plus blew out the dust from the filter element. Once I reasembled it and primed the carburettor it fired up first pull and runs sweetly again. You beauty !!!!!!
