Excellent audio quality and comfort at a cheap price
These headphones are great for mids and highs. Lacking a little in bass, but not more so than any other non-bassy headphone. I've tried a litany of other headphones including: SRH440s, Phillips Citiscape Uptowns, Brainwavz HM5s, HiFiMAN HE4XXs and more and these have held their own vs each and every one of those. The build quality is also great - wire frame + leather (or pseudo leather) self adjusting headband mean it's lightweight and sits perfectly on your head. The stock earpads aren't the best, but they're easily replaced with softer ones for a few dollars on eBay.

Great value, but not without flaws
The Samson SR850 can be found so pretty cheap and are great value headphones. They are semi-open, so there's a bit of sound leakage but makes for a better listening experience. The sound itself is quite good for how much it costs. That said, it is not perfect. My biggest issue with the high end. They tend to be a bit overly bright and can make for quite an uncomfortable listen if listening to audio that is naturally bright already. As well as a brittle high end, it is a bit lacking in the low end. I find it doesn't respond to bass frequencies that cleanly. Overall though, it has good imaging and good detail, especially in the higher frequencies. Overall, they are fantastic value but just a bit too brittle in the higher frequencies.

Great Sound at a Budget Price
Received the Samson SR850 from Amazon last week. These semi-open headphones sound very nice. Bass is clean and punchy. If you like open sound you'll like these cans. The ear cups are big and soft. They are very comfortable to wear on long listening sessions even if you have big ears. If there was a half star I would give these 4.5 stars. Highly recommend.

Excellent budget headphones: VERY comfortable
I'm a professional musician; sound is my thing and being a career pro, I often come up against budget restrictions when making gear choices. Over the years I have learned that more $ seldom equals better performance. It creates the illusion of "better" when if fact just judging a product on it's merits and then factoring in the price can lead to better value. There are heaps of products out there that are great bits of gear that aren't expensive compared to the quality they deliver. These Samson SR850 headphones are that. They are safe copies o...Read more
f AKG K240S headphones that retail for about $150 and I own those too so a comparison was easy. Both the SR850 and the AKG K240S headphones are over ear, semi-open headphones meaning that some sound leaks in and out of your ears while wearing them. The Samsons are lighter than the AKGs but are still very well built and extremely comfortable. The pleather ear pads can get a bit sticky/hot when worn for long periods however swapping those out for some cheap (+/- $6) velour replacement ear pads off flea bay will fix that and improve the sound. As for the sound, the AKGs are better in every area. Smoother, fuller with delightful high end that never gets brittle. When new, the Samsons are a bit too bright for my liking and can border on sounding chirpy however this too can be remedied by adding a second disk of foam to the inside of the ear cup (there is one there already); combined with the velour ear pads, the Samsons now take on a warmth that is lacking right out of the box. They become an enjoyable listen to almost every kind of music though they are not for bass-heads or doof music. Aimed at the home recording studio enthusiast, I have found them to be wonderful for TV and movies and leave my AKGs in the studio. I've been told that these headphones are made by Superlux and share driver components with the HD668B. Dunno. But here's the thing: these headphones can be found for less than $50, sound clear and precise, are light-weight and comfortable and with a few cheap modification, can sound almost as good as headphones 3x the price. There are heaps of reviews on these headphones on places like Head-fi. Have a read. The Samson SR850 headphones are very good value, good sounding headphones that won't empty your wallet.
