Hi David. The 2 second jump indicates your battery is very low. The owner's manual says you shake it in large arcs. It usually works but takes quite a bit of shaking. Seiko would tell you it's because of inactivity. If it doesn't work, your battery is stuffed and needs replacement. The service manager at Seiko Aus told me the early ones had bad batteries however I've had 4 new batteries. Even good ones last only 7 years. The trouble is to maintain the 200M rating, the watch will have to be pressure tested & that means Folding Money if you get it done at a Seiko shop. You can buy the batteries on ebay then take the watch to a good jeweller who has a pressure tester. Not many watch shops have pressure testers anymore so good luck. Funny thing is, my wife also wears a Kinetic also with the 5M43 movement and it's never missed a beat. Seko Aus eventually came to the party and replaced the movement in mine with a later movement. Doesn't matter what I do, I can't get it up to full charge.

I have a 1983 quartz model, and the batteries have all lasted about 7 years, so going by A G Collins' experience the kinetic function isn't helping much!

But in Melbourne there's a Seiko service place in South Melbourne which changes batteries and pressure tests while you wait if you catch them in a good mood, or next day if not, at a reasonable price. The first time I took it to a shop which sent it to Seiko, which took weeks and cost a fortune. Otherwise there's a poky little shop in Collins Street, if memory serves, which changes batteries and pressure tests.
