Hi, I’m error I bought the oil bases 085 Teak Stain, instead of water based. The painter applied 2 coats of the water based ( left over from initial purchase) but it’s come up patchy and lighter in some areas, is it Ok to use oil based to go over the water based product to try and even out tone?
I had my merbau deck fully sanded one year ago. It has faded somewhat and looks dry and no more water beading in exposed areas. It had one Sikkens HLS undercoat and 2 Sikkens Deck top coats. Can i just wash, clean, dry and reapply the deck coat without sanding and will it work ok on some parts of the deck which have not been as exposed to the sunlight and deterioration. I have another deck and did similar. It is around a saltwater chlorinated pool. Does pool water affect the life as it is looking poorly after 6 months.
Yes you can power wash or use the hose on jet mode. Apply deck clean product with a scouring sponge or scrubbing brush. This removes mildew spores. Rinse off. When dry apply 2 top coats. For the perfe...
Read morect finish I lightly sand the deck with a fine sand paper before applying top coats. You only need to fully sand your deck back to the original timber when coats are patchy and timber is dry and grey.I’m after an oil that will still let my mer bay deck grey off
Have you tried straight "Linseed Oil" or if it stays sticky in cold weather (depends where you are try some turps in the oil.
Hi there, I have a hardwood deck that hasn’t been oiled or stained yet. It gets a lot of sun and rain. What would you recommend it cover it with? Thanks - Lynne
I have been using Sikkens on a hardwood (spotted gum) deck for 15 years. I follow their recommendation of 1 x base coat of Cetol HSLE, then 2 x coats of Cetol Deck. Before each yearly redoing I give...
Read more the whole deck a clean with sugar soap and a pressure cleaner with a deck cleaning attachment. I then spot clean any areas with stains eg gum tree sap. I give this outline to show I do it properly, no shortcuts or wishful thinking. OK...... From my experience Sikkens is an expensive product that looks beautiful immediately after it's been done. The areas under cover (ie not exposed to rain & UV) will look good for a couple of years. BUT the uncovered areas exposed to rain and sun will deteriorate quickly and need redoing after 6 months. It's a time consuming expensive job. I'm in the middle of my yearly clean & oil right now. I spent $500 at Bunnings yesterday and will have enough Sikkens oil for this and the next recoat. If I was starting all over again would I use Sikkens? Maybe, but I would first off all look whether there is a product more suited to the Australian climate. Thanks so much for that info. That's really helpful. I'll check out other products because it really is very expensive :)
Can I put Sikkens products over Merbau which has recently had 2 coats of Integain applied to it?
I have put on 1 coat of sikkens HLSE and 2 of deck coat. Is there any advantage / point to putting on another coat of deck coat ?
I have put one coat of Sikkens HLSE and one coat of Sikkens Cetrol Deck on a new deck. There is a film of whitish type hardened oil that has dried on some bits of deck where I may have put it on to thick. I'm now wishing I had done 2 coats of the HLSE as I think I put to thin a layer of this on. Can I wait 6 months or so and do another coat of HLSE or do I have to keep on wit the Cetrol Deck from now on?
can i use sikkens on pine decking ? thanks.
Go to the product guide which will usually list the suitable timbers. If you strip the residual oil in the timber first with Power prep it should be fine.
Sikkens recommends 1 coat of hsle cetol and 2 coats of cetol deck. does it make a difference if I do 2 x coats of hsle because it looks a bit dry? And then 2 coats of deck cetol on top?
I did that on the very first application, it took longer but it lasted well and looked brilliant
Oh good thank you for fast reply I thought maybe it was because too much hsle might Caus it to react or something and not dry properly.
Hi Peter, I always put 2 coats of hsle on first then 2 coats of cetol deck. On our timber rails and house poles, I finish with Cetol filter 7 for UV protection. Very nice finish. Lasts longer.
we have a deck that has been stained in jarrah colour stain. We need to repaint the deck now and dont want the jarrah colour that it is now. Can we use sikkens dark oak to stain over the existing jarrah stain (not sikkens)? Can we do this without stripping the previous stain but using a good prep?
Hi Lynne, I've used Cabots exterior colour stains on cedar and a lot of Sikkens products. If the timber has only been stained with oil without top coatings containing polymers you may be okay to light...
Read morely sand the deck and recoat. If you live in a humid climate, always use deck clean first to kill mildew spores. Without sanding, the Jarrah base colour will still be visible through the dark oak and darken the timber. Try to experiment with a small part of the deck first to see if it's the look you want.Should you ever apply two coats of Cetol HLSe if first coat looks thin after being applied to fully sanded timber which was previously in full sun. for many years.
Chris...the recommended coats for Sikkens HLSe on decks is three coats, at least 24 hours apart. If the deck is in full sun keep an eye on the maintenance side of things. Do not be tempted to use Sikkens slip resistant over the HLSe.
Why not use slip resistant over hlse? I've just done my first coat of hlse on my step treads and will be putting the slip resistant over that. Lol I'm a bit worried about you comment now.
I have a new deck front of my house spotted gum and did feast and Watson deck oil but I need some good finish
Can I use silken product over it like walnut color
If you want to apply a Sikkens colour over the Feast Watson oil you will need to remove that coating first. Sikkens Hsle walnut must be applied on bare timber so it will soak in. Let it dry then apply 2 coats of Sikkens decking oil for a good finish.
Hi Atia - if you're still needing help feel free to call us at Sikkens on 1300 745 536 and we'll help you through the process.
I need to strip sikkens cetol from my hardwood deck as it is peeling, how do I do it
If the timber underneath hasn't gone grey then lightly sand the decking coats and reapply. If grey then also wash down with timber reviva.
Are you sure it is just Cetol??It is unusual for it to peel.It sounds like it is Sikkens non slip over the Cetol. You can try sanding it first and see how that goes but if you find it hard to strip you...
Read more might have to burn it off with a soft flame burner first then sand the residue. After sanding wash down with reviva or similar...it might sound over the top but the more you put into the deck at prep the better it comes up. I gave up on Sikkens...too expensive by far, not as robust as they make out and you need to wait 24 hours between coats. Have you thought of Johnsons deck stain (made by Taubmans)??? you can apply second coat one hour after you started the first coat and walk on in 4 hours. It is good stuff. For extra long life they recommend a third coat, which I have found to be worth it. Good luck..... stripping a deck is a pain. Can you apply this straight onto decking after sanding down?
I have a 10-year-old large tallowwood deck which has been sanded back to bare wood. I want a clear matt finish. I'm tossing up between Sikkens Cetol deck and Intergrain Decking Oil. What's best for longevity?
Depends if your deck is fully exposed to sun. If in Qld, recoat every 6 months for either product. I've used Sikkens as a 2-part oil based product but used it extensively on Merbau decking. There is a customer call line for Sikkens.
The Cetol will be better than the Intergrain for longevity,Am not to impressed with Integrain, too expensive for what I have found to be inferior product. I hope you are aware that the Cetol deck must...
Read more be used over a coating of Cetol HLSe. You will require 2 coats over one coat of HLSe.Have you thought of just using HLSe on its own, it is a satin finish but will need 3 coats each 24 hours apart. You must be careful using it as it "dries" very quickly on raw timber so you must cover the deck boards say to at a time and stain along the length of the board, not across. You must have a wet edge all the time otherwise it dries and the dry mark will be seen.So stain 2 boards down and back up 2 boards. You might find you can do more than two at a time, you will find out when you start.Timber decks are the biggest pain on a house.Good luckWhat is the best sikkens product to use on picnic tables in a beer garden attached to a pub, mostly in sun has a retractable roof for when it is raining so not really wet other than spilt drinks.
Can BLX-pro water based stain be used over the top of HLSe oil based stain
I would ring the Sikkens Customer line on this one as the two products have different chemical compositions.
Same as aquadeck cabots?
Sikkens have a a two part oil based product but now also have water based decking products which would may be similar to Cabots Aqua deck. I've only used the range of oil based products.
Do I need to sand all the grey parts off the deck? Actually do I need to sand at all or just use the sikkens deck and timber cleaner ....
If the deck reviver product doesn't get rid of the grey then from my experience you will get better colour and product absorption after sanding.
