Not what I expected
Our Smeg rangehood is actually a SST 415, but similar experience to other reviewers. It functioned well for the first 12 months and then literally down hill from there. The design feature of this rangehood is that it is supposed to hide behind the cupboard doors when retracted back. At the 13 month mark, it began to sag and then really sag! After much complaining to Smeg, they came and repaired the rangehood and other fulty Smeg appliances. But after six months the rangehood saged again and is as bad as ever. On both occasions, otside the warranty period. The design is obviously flawed as the model is no longer available.

Steve Cullen (Smeg national service manager) sorted out my problems in a very expedient and understanding manner. I am pleased to say that my appliance is now working as good as new!

Apparently you get what you pay for
I moved into a new property with this range hood in December 2015 and I see from the reviews I am not alone in finding it to be fairly useless in an open plan living area. I cannot hear the TV with the fan on either setting and I have lost any real hope that it will remove cooking smells although I keep turning it on in case of a miracle. The instruction manual does not give advice on cleaning although it warns us sternly that there is a fire risk if cleaning is not carried out according to instructions! I don't know when the unit was purchased but I guess no more than a few years ago. The date noted is only because I can't submit the review without it.

Noisy and doesn't 'suck'
Agreed with the previous reviews, same scenario- off the plan apartment block. It can only handle very basic cooking. I noticed even the steam from boiling pasta water doesn’t get sucked away properly sometimes. It has two speeds, speed 1 the noise is like driving with windows down, speed 2 is like flying in a helicopter with the windows down…

noisy and smelly
It came with house in November 2015 so is cheap and nasty. Can not cook any thing without filling house with smells. We can not hold a conversation at either speed. IT is vented to outside but is a complete waste of time trying to use it. Wont buy a smeg replacement.

This range hood is not fit for purpose.
The Smeg "Cooker Hood" was installed in a house we bought off the plan from Core Building Group in Canberra. It was installed as a 're-circulation' model. It has a weak engine making the suction nearly non-existent. It may perform better if ducted, however it'll be impossible for us to duct the range hood, given it's location in the house, i.e. downstairs in a two-storey townhouse. The model is 'commercial only', or in other words cheap for builders to purchase. In our opinion, it's not suitable for kitchens where people want to cook as it'll m...Read more
ake the whole house fill up with cooking smells, including clothes you might be drying indoors, curtains, etc. Also, as our smoke detector is near the kitchen, often we have to open all our doors in order to avoid the smoke detector going off. Our advice is that if your builder wants to "sell" you one of these (or you find it in the specification for a house you are buying off the plan), either insist on it being ducted or find a better, more powerful model. We are extremely disappointed and would have expected more from Smeg and the builder.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

PeedOffasked
Took possession of our GJ Gardner house in Goulburn 13 months ago where the building supervisor said that all those vents in the eaves (toilet, 2 bathrooms & rangehood) are part of the Basix requirements. The one outside our kitchen outside our glass splashback window belonged to the rangehood however, we had a builder guest and he noticed that the air was "circulating" back into the room. I had never opened the cupboard doors before when it was in use. Went outside and sure enough zero air was passing to the outside. How is this possible?

Dear Peedoff. It would appear that your rangehood has been installed as a recirculating unit rather than an external ducted unit, which is acceptable. If you have any further queries, please contact your builder to discuss further. If need be, you can discuss direct with myself as I am the National Service and Spare Parts Manager for Smeg Australia, my email is [email protected]

Hi EJO please call Smeg service on 02 8667 4833 as I think there is a fault with the installation of the hood, you need a technician to look at the hood. Regards Chris
contacted Smeg official, he basically said it is a cheap product brought in because builders want them. Had no idea what extraction rate or noise level should be. A service guy looked at it, said it was installed properly and it was all that we could expect. If Smeg put their name to this rubbish we wonder what their idea of quality is
