Happy with my FS38
Have had an FS38 for about 3 years. Best whipper-snipper I have had. Starts easily, isles and runs well. The system for wrapping the trimmer line is miles better than the Homelite I had previously. I see lots of negative reviews it I am very happy with mine. I recommend.

May as well burn your money.
Never had trimmer issues until getting the fs38. Starting issues, fuel feed issues & stalling when used on an angle. Idle & full throttle seem to be the only options. It has 'flat spots', wants to stall & does regularly between idle & full throttle. Trimmer head wont stop spinning when throttle released and wont spin fast enough to do a good job unless at full throttle oh and we cant forget the cord feed issues. How this shonky pos is even allowed to stay on the market with all the same issues reported is beyond me.

Shithouse!!!
Had an old Stihl whipper snipper for years but gave it to s friend and decided to upgrade to an fs38..... well big mistake ! Would take 200 pulls to get it to start! Had it for six months and one day i just lost my cool with it and smashed it to pieces!
I rate the brand highly but these things are just crap. Buyer beware !

Bad experience with Stihl FS38 line trimmer
Bought brand new. Was never much good from the first time I ever used it. Difficult to start. Difficult to keep going once started. Because it was always such a hassle I tended not to use it with the result that it did lie around for lengthy periods unused with petrol in the tank which apparently is not good for them. After refilling recently with new petrol I gave it another try. Couldn't manage to get it to run for more than about a minute. With, I would estimate, no more than a few hours total of actual usage since purchase, I took it to a S...Read more
tihl dealership to see what they had to say about it. Was advised that it was not worth the cost of attempting repairs since its replacement cost was only $179. (I had no interest in even thinking about that.) Cost of a strip down and overhaul would come close to replacement value. Since it was now apparently only useless junk there seemed no point in even taking it home so I offered it free to the dealer to scrap for parts. He seemed quite happy to accept. This was a bad experience which for me taints the name of Stihl. Won't be in any hurry to buy another Stihl product of any description. Disappointing because I had always thought of this as a reputable brand.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Fuel feed issues when held at angle so that cutting disc is vertical.
Depending on which way you hold the unit the motor can lose power and stall. Seems like fuel feed issues but fuel prime bulb is still full of fuel. Motor runs better if throttle is kept running at high speed, Runs at all throttle positions if cutting disc is kept horizontal. Notice that there is no clunk type weighted fuel pick up like a chainsaw would have, so maybe this is the cause?

Stihl FS38 weed whacker
Hi! Max again from New Plymouth NZ! Have a Stihl FS38 weed whacker I use all around the section. I use for edges and trimming light leaf hedges and trees and shrubs I have here and for heavy duty weed work around existing remaining native bush areas on my semi rural section out of town .
It is my go to weapon of choice before using my ride on mower to complete the job of tidying up my 3/4,acre section. I have used it for over 3 years never failed to start . Last week started running rough and low revs then stopped. Could not restart it . Spa...Read more

Reasonably happy with unit now
*****UPDATED REVIEW*****
I have upgraded my original review from 3 to 4 stars. After having used the unit for 2 years it is more than adequate for the intended use and have had no dramas with break downs or with it being hard to start. I think it's only fair to update if you become more satisfied with a product over time.

It's Only OK
After owning an FS36 for about 18 years it finally died.
I was extremely happy with the reliability and long life of my trusty Stihl.
I thought I would buy another Stihl to replace it.
Unfortunately it is not as good as the old one. ...Read more

Chinese made Stihl
The new mates rates Stihl products are all produced in China so unfortunatley the quality has gone. The price is what has become important to Stihl Australia, not the old fashioned build quality we became used to in the seventy,s & eighty,s. Not worth the money i paid for it. Apparently if the serial number begins with 8 it is China made.

Bad from the start
It was tough to start from day one. Have a total of one hour running time on it and a couple of days later it won't start. Waste of money for a first time Stihl buyer. Real dissappointment. It's going back to the dealer, and I would be interested to see him start it. Yes, I followed the operators manual exactly.

Ok in the beginning useless thereafter
These people don't know how to make engines. I have a 20+ year old strimmer engine that runs perfectly with just gentle servicing, starts first time most of the time. Only issue was the string mechanism is no longer available. These days with this new stuff they strip everything down to the most basic useless plastics that wear out after a few uses like the membrane. Don't touch this make - they couldn't care less. This one failed to start and got harder and harder - despite clean exhaust filter, good spark plug. The membranes in the carb look warped after just 2 years.

Worst purchase I have ever made
Purchased a whipper snipper for my Daughter - so, of course, you purchase the product with the house hold name. Wrong - one week old, after many attempts to start it failed, back to reseller, who advised they had to replace the carbie. This made no obvious difference, as the machine remained almost impossible to start. My daughter threw it in the back of the shed, went to Bunnings and bought a Talon, which, for the past three years, has started first pull every time. Great buy, and less than half of the price!!!!!

Buyer Beware - Longtime Stihl Customer
I bought my Stihl FS38 3 years ago after having my previous Stihl trimmer for over 15 years. I can not express to you how disappointed I am with this trimmer. I should have listened to my gut instinct when I bought it, it looks and feels nothing like the Stihl trimmers of before. Many of the reviews then also said to stay away but I didn't listen. This product is cheaply made and has given me nothing but problems. The starting procedure is wonky and quite often wont start or only starts with after many pulls. If you try to do edging with ...Read more
it on its side, the trimmer simply stalls. The run speed is too high and hard to regulate. Today I took it to the dump put it out of its misery. I should have done that in year one and saved myself a lot of headache.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

OK once you get to know it
Does a good job and still going well after 8 years. Can give trouble starting until you know what to look for. I always add recommended dose of "Stabil" fuel stabilizer to can before buying petrol to rule out stale fuel problems after winter storage. Use 50:1 Fuel mix (20 ml/Litre) with high octane 98 fuel. This trimmer will gradually get harder to start over time. In the end mine seemed to have too much compression to pull the cord. This was caused by the spark arrestor blocking up. It is located at the back in the exhaust port. It is a cast i...Read more
ron nipple with a hex that requires a 15mm socket to remove. It has a fine tubular steel mesh that gradually blocks and needs to be wire brushed, or preferably a torch to burn off the carbon. If starting is a problem, just remove arrestor and try to start without it to test. The theory behind the idea of being particular with your fuel mix is for a clean burn to stop the carbon build up on the arrestor. I had a lot of trouble with jamming lines and found a big improvement by using Bynorm trimmer line. Though as mentioned previously, if the bump head gives you the pips, best to invest about $50 in an aftermarket trimming head. The machine still runs well through the rev range and I still have the original spark plug and air filter installed.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Not a happy chappy.
I purchased the FS 38 from Timberfix(a fine reputable hardware shop) at Lithgow back in December of 2014 as my dad's old Mitsubishi unit had died after many, many years of faithful service and my chinese el cheapo brush cutter is too heavy to lug around, although it does a fine job. I'd had nothing but trouble from the Stihl until fairly recently. It had well and truly run out of warranty and I was going to throw it into the Otto bin as it refused to start (surprise, surprise!!!). As I had nothing to lose (in terms of warranty) I decided to ge...Read more
t my Bosch multi-tool and cut off the plastic lugs on the carburettor mixture needles; quick and easy. I then turned the needles gently clockwise using a small screwdriver until they just seated/stopped. Then I screwed the needles one whole turn anti-clockwise and went through the normal starting procedure ie close the choke, pump the primer four of five times, pull the start cord until you hear the unit try to start, open the choke, pull the starter cord a couple of more times, BINGO and away she goes; YAHOO!!! I allowed the unit a couple of minutes to warm up then fine tuned the mixture needles (find the low needle position between "lean" and "rich" at idle and then do the same for the high needle at full throttle). Goes like a charm now. The auto-feed line head is chinese rubbish. Lou Demmocks, a friend of mine, recommended I replace it with a Triton head from Bunnings hardware at Lithgow (about A$30), which I did. What a great little unit!!!. I'm now a happier chappy but what a hassle the Stihl has been. At this price level (A$200 to 300) I'd look at something like a Tanaka (nothing but praise from a couple of locals who purchased them from a mower dealer in Lithgow). Ask around and look up review sites like this one. Stihl is rapidly losing it's reputation for quality products which is a crying shame as it used to be such a wonderful company. I think it's pro-grade tools are probably okay but I wouldn't risk it.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
So far so good but not built to last
Have owned a Stihl fs52 for 29 years It had a curved shaft but rotated ccw.It continued to play up so decided to update to a FS38.Hate the bump feed and the fact that it rotates cw (old habits die hard) otherwise a good machine, starts easy - enough power - keenly priced although not build to last as long as previous earlier models

Going great again.
I note some people have some issues with the Stihl as I have had. Mine was great for some time and then it wouldn't rev up, kept stalling, trouble starting etc. So I did is what I did to my blower some 12 months ago. Undid the small bolt on the exhaust and removed the spark arrestor (like wire mesh that clags up constantly) screwed the exhaust back in and there you go, works like a charm. Those arrestors clag up constantly, not sure why they are there as I never see a spark and I'm doing lawn edges, green lawn edges, nothing to burn.

Disappointed
Like other reviewers I found the Stihl would only perform well when at full throttle. Sometimes you need slower speeds near wire fences or shrubs you do not wish to risk damaging. This machine was not good for that sort of work. I also found that, because of the high working speed, I was using a lot of line. I have solved the problem by taking a trip to the dump. The disappointment was made worse by the exact opposite experience with my Stihl chainsaw - still going strongly after 31 years, many tons of firewood and worn out chains and bars.

Very good trimmer
Recently bought this trimmer during Stihl's spring sale and I am sooooo impressed with it! I use it for my own yard and also for my mowing business and it handles everything perfectly. I don't care that it is a bent shaft trimmer, it still edges fine, trims everything well and starts in 2 or 3 pulls, which is a dream come true compared to my old one which took nearly 5mins to start each time and never stayed running. One thing I must mention is that you should carry some extra premixed fuel with you especially if you are using it a lot- it drai...Read more
ns it's tank fairly quickly. Also I am finding that sometimes the engine sound kind of choked if you hold it upside down to edge but running it at high power and flipping it over fixes this. Overall a fantastic bargain, a great trimmer and I would definitely buy one again! :DSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Fine when it works - but when it doesnt...
Worked more or less OK for a year though line tended to spool off during use. Then repeated problems with starting - did all the checks, but devil of a job to get enough pucrhase on the nut of the spark plug fitting. Took back for repair, cost me £60 and I thought of ditching it then - I should have! Now it starts (eventually!) but wont rev up and power the cutting disk, stays at idling speed. I suppose I cd try adjusting the carb but why the Hell should I - its been used maybe 2 hours since last in the repair shop! Poor design, poor performance. Try another brand! Im about to....

pening. Perhaps this filter is not heavy enough, and the odd shape of the tank makes it difficult for the filter to travel down the filler port to chase the fuel. The primer bulb being full of fuel bears no relation to the fuel feed that the carburetor is receiving as it is a suction bulb that sucks up through the fuel filter and tube through the carb and dumps back into the tank. The primer bulb is on the upstream side of the carburetor.
