Good for current price

Starts alright if you follow directions and use new fuel and Stihl oil. Full choke (lever to bottom) and few pulls till fires. If fires but not start, click choke lever up a notch. That usually starts after a few pulls and then blip to idle and off you go. Spoke to dealer and he stressed importance of fresh fuel if even 10 hrs old. Is a solid, reliable tool for price. Not meant for large trees but good for re-growth and branch pruning. Not too heavy for older man or fit female.

Oil leaking

Peaple when chain oil leak just open cap when done working to relieve pressure and won't leak much. Same with gas cap. Great little saw. Great for limbing but also for falling small trees and bucking up. Would buy another any time also own a 251 and a dolmar 7900.

Stihl MS 171.

published

Have used the MS 171 in a commercial setting. Use the correct fuel ratio and follow the startup instructions on the Stihl website, you shouldn't have any issues. Save the cutting of stumps until the end as cutting dirty wood will result in a blunt chain. Generic chains are available on eBay at a cost of $10-15. Keep a few in your kit & change them over as soon as the saw stops pulling into the wood to avoid further damage. At this price, it is hardly worth the time of sharpening.

Waste of Money

This is the most unreliable chainsaw I have ever known. The only good thing I can say is that it starts easily. I have owned it for only 2 years and it has been back to the dealers for repairs 3 time now, and the repair total costs are now just over 50% of the purchase price. My previous chainsaw was a husqvarna of similar size but not only was it cheaper to buy but in 10 years it never required any more than routine services. Regret now I was talked into "trading up"

MS 171

can I use sump oil for the bar? if not why not, it is only to lubricate it.

Stihl says used motor oil gives you skin cancer and it does not have the tackiness needed to stop sling off of oil from chain.

Sump oil will also damage or even kill living trees you cut or prune. Use canola oil, like many professional chainsawyers do

No only use bar oil best value in a 5 litre as has the stickiness required therefore the best lube for bar and chain

It is practically brand new, have not used it for may months. Put gas and oil in but does not start at all. Is there some plug or switch on it that has to be turned on before starting?

Hi, no switches just the starting switch to the left of the trigger, if you haven't used it for quite a few months it's possible the petrol has gone sour, which makes life very difficult, also make sure the air filter is clean and remove and clean the spark plug, its entirely possible that you simply flooded it. hope this helps, good luck.

Empty out old fuel, add new fuel mixed 50:1 with the correct 2-stroke oil. Then read manual on how to start this machine. It's an incredibly easy-starting, reliable machine. If you are still having a problem, see dealer, it's still under warranty most likely.
