Choosing the chainsaw that meets your specific cutting needs is important, considering they're a highly powered and dangerous garden tool. Petrol chainsaws are the most popular and powerful type of saw, though they do come with some drawbacks.
A petrol chainsaw is powered by a two-stroke engine, and is considered a high quality, high-performing machine best used for heavy duty cutting. With the proper maintenance, and a full tank of fuel, petrol chainsaws can be taken anywhere. Once it's running it is an easy to use, durable, and powerful saw. They are also typically cheaper than battery-powered models.
The main drawback of the petrol chainsaw is maintenance. The engine needs to be serviced regularly, the tank needs to be full of fuel, and the blades of the saw need to be sharpened. It's also the loudest of all types of chainsaw, making it somewhat unsuitable for residential settings (at least on Sunday mornings).
The high-power output of the petrol chainsaw makes it ideal for heavy cutting. That is, tree felling, log splitting, saw-log prep and milling. If used for these purposes, the guide bar should be at least 50 cm (20") in length.
Safety is an important consideration for all chainsaws. Make sure you're properly equipped with head, eye and ear protection, and have a pair of gloves to operate your saw. The noise and high power-output of this machine may mean further consideration of the environment in which you plan to use it. Additionally, making sure your chainsaw is the right weight for you is critical to using it safely.
