A bit concerned I am about to purchase a2008 (09) forester, with 120k on the clock good service record, timing belt done. After having an RAC test they tell me that there is a little seepage of oil from the head, but not to worry as this is quite common in these cars. After further investigation I find that head gaskets going are quite a common problem on these models, can you enlighten me on this matter?

It depends which month of the year it was built, best way if your unsure is to pop into your subaru deal or give them a call, they will be able to let you know.

The aerial is built into the rear side Window on the passenger side.
If you have an aftermarket stereo tge rem wire will need to be connected to the power feed for the aerial.

I think the ride is comfortable, and very similar to that of a 2010 model RAV 4 that I drove last week.

Has anyone had a problem with the 2013 Forester XT premium or others behaving like there is a problem with ignition equipment breaking down under acceleration (hard or light) or too much fuel being fed into the engine causing miss firing and loss of power.

Hi Alan, I would hate to spoil the reputation of such a solid looking vehicle but my 2013 Forester XS Premium also does the same. Can't figure out what's the reason, as this happens very sporadically.

Looking at 2010 Forester with view to pulling 800 - 1000kg van. can anyone offer advice experiences etc?

You should check the manufacturers advice regarding towing capacity for the engine and transmission type you have in mind. Our car is a 2003/04 model with 2.5 litre naturally aspirated engine and automatic transmission. I believe that load capacity is within its capability, but I have never towed with it. My strong belief however is that such a load on our car when on the flat would be fine, but it would really test it on steep climbs. For that reason I wouldn't do it. .

Hi Aaron, you can try resetting it and cleaning out the mic port. Otherwise you might need to get subaru to look at it. If you do reset it you will need to set it all up again

Pull the unit out and replace it with a good quality double DIN aftermarket unit from a quality manufacturer like Pioneer. The head unit in Fortesters is possibly the worst part of the car. Certainly the crappiest head unit I've ever encountered.

Hi . Looking to buy a 2008 forester with 110000kms full service history . Any tips or tricks ? Some say stay away some say brilliant ... Confused ??

Speaking of a 2.5 litre model, auto, and without a turbo. A very good car if you are looking for versatility, comfort and reasonable economy (say 10kms litre overall for an auto). The AWD makes them very sure footed on wet or slippery roads. But there are two things you should do - (a) make sure that it has a full service history and was always serviced on time; and (b) get it put on a hoist and thoroughly checked by a mechanic. The mechanic should look for any signs of leakage from seals and gaskets (including head gaskets) plus general inspection. These are just sensible precautions. My mechanic tells me that these cars will do 300,000 kms if serviced on time.

I have a 99 forester and only get about 480 kms per tank of fuel, is this how mych i am suppose to get? if not how do i improve economy ?

Ask your mechanic to check out the catalytic converter. As they age the little holes start to clog up. The best I recall was about 700k on a tank highway conditions with premium unleaded. I would suggest not to use e10 fuel tends to create carbon build up. I wouldn't use e10 in any motor.

Also the type of oil you use helps. The thicker the oil, the more engine resistance (poor economy). I use full synthetic. Either 0w 40 or 5w 40.

With a baby seat fitted in the back on of the 2012 forester model are you still able to fold down the larger split fold seat ? Is there enough room on the single back seat for the baby seat ?
Thanks Katie

2 answers

Simon66

We use an Infasecure Kompressor Caprice. Drivers side back seat folds without any interference from the baby seat. The securing points are located in the roof above the rear cargo area. Which can make the straps a little awkward to get bubs in and out of their seat. Particularly in the reverse (newborn) position.

Hi,
I would like to know the life of the engine and if it was worth the swap from a barina. 2009 barina 38000ks to a forester with 2003 with 200000ks. How much longer do I have on the forester motor?

2 answers

Very Sorry for the delay .If it has been well serviced and driven well you should expect to get at least another 200, 000 ks . The Barina motor I think works harder, a small motor.

My MY03 has now 305000 kms and still runs well. The same oil consumption, about 1 litre between services. No coolant loss or leakage. Serviced every 12500 kms, more or less.
Original motor and gearbox, one centre diff replacement. Genuine Subaru spare part purchased from US at about half Subaru Australia price.
Still very happy with it and still no thoughts of replacement.

The 'check engine light ' comes on periodically and I have been told that it is because connected to fuel emmissions sensor and mechanically nothing wrong? do you have any feed back please.

I am not a mechanic. My advice to you is take it to your trusted mechanic. All sensors are put there for a reason. If the sensor itself is giving an incorrect reading then that is not helpful as you lose the ability to determine if the area it is protecting is functioning correctly. If the area it is detecting is not functioning then it needs repair. I have found Subaru are good vehicle for long life motoring if they are driven with care and serviced regularly. If you are on Central Coast of NSW I can recommend Wilkinson Auto for repairs. Good luck

I have been driving with my light on for 20,000klm. I believe I was told it was the fuel emissions sensor also and given a quote of $750 to fix.....I opted to keep driving with the light on.

Hi. Got a question on the specs of the MY05! Was there a power output jump (112 to 121kw for the 'X') around August in the MY05 model or was this only effective from the start of the MY06 range?
I like the MY05 shape but would not mind the little extra power, can I have my cake and eat it too? Thanks.

The power output jump applied to the facelifted models, which I believe started in the MY06 Model Year. Yes go eat your cake

Don't know, but all you have to do is go to a dealer with a suitcase and see, My guess is up to three large suitcases. I'm only talking about the cargo area if you drop the back seat you will have a lot more space. Good luck.

Anything 07 or prior. The 08 to 11 is an overbloated upsize with no discernible improvement. Same motor, gearbox, aircon, everything, including poor fuel consumption. Im looking at selling my 09 and buying an 07 or 06.
