Frustrated with our 2012 Diesel Manual Outback! Carbon build up and using oil.
We purchased our outback new in late 2012, loving the fact that it is roomy for our family, with excellent fuel economy and plenty of power. However 2 weeks after our purchase we noticed a 'miss' in the engine. We have been battling our dealership and Subaru ever since! They have discovered excessive carbon build up in the turbo vanes, and other than cleaning that out once, have done nothing more to rectify the problem. They eventually said it was due to our driving style and gave us a guide with recommended revs for each gear. We can hone...Read more
stly say we usually rev higher than recommended, which would be conducive to burning out soot, however we still have the problem today. In addition to that issue, for the last few months we've noticed the vehicle using a lot more oil than it ever has done. Since our last service on the 5th of June 2014, we checked the oil level after the dealership had replaced it and it was over full (apparently this is bad for the engine also). Just 20 days later (roughly 2000kms travelled), we are down to half way between the full and low markers. There are no leaks, and so when questioning Subaru and the dealership why our vehicle is suddenly using so much oil, their response is that it is still within the 'normal' range of oil usage. They say 'normal' is up to 1 litre of oil for every 2000km. We have owned several turbo diesel vehicles and have never had to top up the oil between services. If anyone has any information regarding our issues, we'd love to hear from you, as we are frustrated with Subaru and the dealerships response that 'everything is fine with your vehicle' or that it is 'owner driving style'. Economical, roomy, comfortable. Engine problems, 'missing', oil usage, not happy with dealership service or warranty.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Disappointed
The few good points of this car were overshadowed by the bad.
Clutch/ gearbox combination is awful. Clutch would slip when cold. Also felt like the clutch would dis/ engage at slightly differing levels of clutch pedal travel..down low, up high etc. Very frustrating. End up having to ride the clutch to ensure smoothness especially when moving from stand still. I have driven trucks with smoother operation. We approached Subaru several times with this issue with no luck. Customer service is awful. At a dealership recently (looking at a different...Read more

Ours was a 2010 diesel. Brand new. From memory I filled out all the vehicle details on posting this, unsure why they don't appear here.

2010 Subaru Outback Premium Satnav Diesel
What can be said that hasn't be said in a professional review. Probably nothing but then again I don't come tainted from driving the latest greatest Audi/Mercedes/$100,000+ European SUV. What I can give that they don't is how it is to live with day to day. One word, Brilliant. Subaru have got it right. Simple and sophisticated in the same package.
Lets start outside. Plenty of ground clearance to do some gravel work/light off roading. Enough to keep you out of trouble for the most part. Stylings not everyone cup of tea but it does lo...Read more
ok pretty muscular even sporty with the diesel bonnet scoop. I do think the panels would dent easily as its quite light sheet metal. Lights are good and vision is excellent. OEM tyres aren't much chop, particularly if you pump them to 38-40 psi. Keep to recommended 32psi/220kpa. Running Gear. Engine is brilliant. Better than my VW Passat 2.0TDI. Much more power and torque. With the 6 speed manual there isn't that "Lag" you find with other small high revving diesel engines. Particularly automatics like the VW DSG as good as it is. It's much like driving a medium powered petrol vehicle like my AU series 3 XR6 from this perspective. Gearbox is good, I like it. It's nice and metallic and feels good in the hand. Gears not close enough to go from 2nd to 5th all the time like in a boy racer. As has been said 1st gear is tall and you could do almost all your driving around town in 1,2 and 3rd gears. 6th is great for highway stuff but i have found for climbing real gradients that you'll drop back to 5th. I particularly like the all wheel drive as it feels secure. Steering is good not great I have found it really light at highway speeds as its speed sensitive. In the cabin is a nice place to be. Drivers in a good position, vision is great from the reasonably high driving position. leather is lovely and the dash is well laid out. Doesn't have all the quality feel good features that the Passat has (heated seats etc) but on a family touring wagon (why we bought it) its more than adequate. The back doors open very wide perfect of getting small children in and out and there also a huge amount of space in the back seat for adults. The shoulder room in the back has been increased for this model. The boot space is good but I would have liked some more cubby holes for bits and pieces. The electric drivers seat is handy with the 2 person memory setting. Would have been nice for the passenger. In summary it's hard to fault this vehicle. For an outdoorsy type of family it's a great vehicle. I'd definitely recommend it. Heaps of space, quality of build and parts, value for money 2nd hand, 5 star safety, comfort and ergonomics Yokohama Geolander (OEM) tyres not great.

Find out how Subaru Outback 4GEN compares to other Large / 7 Seater SUVs
Know better, choose better.
2010 Diesel Excellent Economy.
My first Subaru was a 95 manual FWD liberty wagon. It was a very solid car went that we drove around Australia including many rough roads in its 3rd year. It then lasted 12 more years without a problem. Wish I had had the 2010 Outback back then (esp the high 213mm ground clearance and the self leveling rear suspension) We had to fit uprated springs to the old liberty when we filled the rear with camping gear and we still scraped the belly on some of the rough dirt roads in WA.
The new diesel has done 6.6l/100km average economy so far (320...Read more
00km 50/50 city/hwy). The outback's AWD with electronic traction control is infallible on slippery bush tracks and rough gravel roads seem smooth with its excellent well sorted long travel suspension and excellent noise suppression. The new diesel cruises effortlessly at < 2000rpm at 100km/h and never seems to be working hard. It doesn't have the (1.2x) low range featured on earlier manual Subaru 4wds but it can climb a steep hill at near idle speed in 1st gear. The new car has more people space but the boot is not quite as long or nearly as tall as the 95 Liberty's was. This may be due to the need to store a larger spare under the boot floor or merely to allow easier conversion to a full length flat floor when the back seat is down. Either way the new outback could not accommodate many of the large items I was able to put into the 95 Liberty. Other issues with the 2010 outback include - a speedometer that reads 10%+ over the true speed (Subaru say this is within spec) - a hazard lights button that is so close to the gear stick that it sometimes pressed by accident. - soft body panels than flex if you lean on the car and can easily be dented.Similar opinion? 2010 Outback Premium 3.6R - fits my bill
after some pleasant trips along dirt in our little S40 Volvo we realised we needed more ground clearance if we were to continue finding places off the beaten track. We bought this car based on pleasurable experiences many friends have had with Subarus generally and felt that AWD was a worthwhile addition.
Would have bought the diesel except for lack of auto (we loved our D5 diesel in the Volvo) but went with the big 6 after reading the 2.5 can struggle a bit at times.
A 4,000 kms trip over to Broken Hill and north from Yunta onto a large dirt...Read more

update July 2014 - still have the Outback 3.6 and can't see it leaving us for quite a few years yet. Still tight and rattle free at 70,000. Serviced by non dealer and therefore quite affordable.

MY10 Outback Turbo Diesel
First up, I am 200 cm tall. I don't like the big Aussie sixes and wanted a well made, safe and economical car that I could comfortably fit into. Even with my seat well back passengers can fit behind me. This generation of the Outback is larger than the previous models (which I found a bit restrictive behind the wheel).
I love the motor!! It's so economical! I can get around 6.5l per 100km around town, and 5.8 on the Highway! 1st gear is a bit tall, and the gap to second is perhaps a bit far. I'd be interested to see how an auto or CVT...Read more
gearbox would improve this car. Torque is great, will pull uphill in 6th gear! Couple of silly niggles. The hill-hold has to be turned on manually - it should be constantly on like the earlier Forester I owned. For $45K I'd have liked bluetooth and reverse sensors. Turbo diesel fuel economy! nothing of note.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Great car. But gear box and clutch I bit of a let down Diesel Manual
I have now clocked just over 105000km. All round a great car with not enough thought into the gear box. Things I have had to fix are both head lights at 45000km. The cluth at 90000km. I was very disappointed with the clutch. I have never had a clutch go so quickly. Normally almost get twice that. I do a lot of driving and im not hard on the clutch.
It is a very comfortable car and very very efficient. I haven't had to replace them brakes yet which has been great.
Very economical, brakes lasted a long time. Like everything about the car bu...Read more

2010 model is great for my family of 5, but watch the poor quality headlights when night driving
Fuel consumption must have improved considerably as I achieve about 8l/100km country driving. Comfortable and roomy enough, and I feel quite safe driving this car when compared to other station wagons. Headlights are a real problem though. Low beam lights are hopeless and not bright enough to see objects on the road in time to stop when driving at 100km/h. High beam lights not much better. In fact I would nearly go as to say they are dangerous. Because of this fact, I probably would not buy another unless this problem was fixed as I rate ...Read more
safety as my number one issue (shame I didn't test drive at night prior to purchase to discover this problem). Meets expected fuel consumption, comfortable, great safety inclusions Headlight light output is terrible and unsafe when travelling dark country roads at 100km/h. Subaru don't seem to have a fix for this which is a worry.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
