One of the worst quality car in the market with worst support
I bought this car brand new from Subaru Glen Waverley in 2012. Regularly serviced by the book
There were so many recalls and the service centre takes its own sweet time to give a time slot to fix it
Just after 6 years(i paid for extended warranty) the mirror switch failed.($190 )this came off the dashboard during warranty and when they put it back the downward adjustment stopped working.I had no time to go back.
I live close to Geln Waveley and GW service centre is absolutely crap. They did not replace a head light globe as they couldn't cont...Read more

Honest & dependable
Bought her new in 2013. She is my retirement vehicle. Something of a special as she has leather and satnav but not the sun roof. Have done >80,000 kms and she has not missed a beat. Still on original tyres! Done a few long trips MEL-NOOSA, MEL-ADEL, MEL-Wodonga. Fuel consumption rarely exceeds 8L per 100kms. She does a trip from Mornington to Footscray about 3 times a month which is a total of 600kms a month on freeway. Uses no oil, I have always used synthetic. My son has a Liberty wagon and my other son has a Forester all trouble free. Great lock on the steering (aka as turning circle) All round a great family wagon.

Quite dissapointed
Outback 2.5i Premium, 6-speed manual, bought brand new on 18 Mayember 2011 in Canberra from the dealer called Capital Subaru. Travelled 150,000km now.
Up until June 2018, not too bad. Routine service every 6 months as advised by Subaru.
The first big problem happened at about 20:00 on 10 June 2018. At that time, I was driving the car on Monaro Highway near Canberra. The Outback suddenly lost power and I barely had time to park it in the emergency lane. I called a friend of mine to give my wife and kids a lift home and I waited for NRMA alone ...Read more
in the darkness. Finally, it turned out that the pump failed to pump the petrol from the tank to the engine. The second big problem happened at about 18:00 on 27 September 2018 when I drove the Outback home from work. The clutch was already quite stuck for 2 days. And it finally fully collapsed on that day. I couldnt start the car and this time it didnt leave me any chance to move the car out of the road. So, I had to leave the Outback in the traffic. The third big problem happened at about 19:00 on 20 July 2022 when I drove the Outback on Federal Highway near Canberra. The exact symptom happened again as the car suddenly lost the power. The NRMA guy told me nothing broken. The car was climbing a hill and the petrol level in the tank wasnt high enough to go through the pump to reach the engine. This problem is common on Subaru Outbacks. I wonder if this is a design flaw. He added some more petrol and I could start the car.Purchased in November 2021 at Subaru Dealers for $42,600.00.

Great family car
We purchased our MY11 3.6L premium Outback from a dealership when it was 3 years old and had 50,000kms on the clock.
It has been our faithful family car for the last 6 years now, and has never skipped a beat. We service it twice a year and have only had a few minor things to repair - but it has always kept running for us and safely gets us from A to B without ever letting us down. We learned early on never to service it with Subaru, and instead have it cared for by our trusted local mechanic.
The 3.6L engine provides ample power and engine ...Read more
response when you need it, although is a bit thirsty - we average 13L/100km for a mix of urban and freeway driving in a week. It provides a comfortable ride for passengers and an enjoyable driving experience for the driver - solid and grippy, yet nimble when needed. Fun and sporty in a mummy wagon, as I call it. Our only dilemma is that our 3 growing children fight relentlessly in the back seat, and we cant find a 7 seater car that we love as much as our Outback!Purchased in July 2021.

The Subaru Outback is the perfect car for many reasons! I love the way you can get in the seat a fantastic level!
Transportation is fantastic with pods, back seats come down and towing a trailer or caravan! It’s loves the small commutes to large driving trips around Australia. Tech worthy dash and console!

Excellent, does everything you need from a car and lots more.
Ok so let's start with the bad points, I'm not overly keen on the digital heater control as I prefer to be able to just twist a dial and be done with it, but in the grand scheme of things it's not too bad, it does look good though.
The good points, where do I begin!!! I have the diesel engine which is super economical, easily gets 650-700km a tank on short trips and 800km plus on longer journeys.
The seats/interior is comfortable, durable and looks good. The boot is huge!
On the road it is quite and comfortable.
Off road it is surprisingl...Read more

An excellent vehicle
We purchased the 2.0L Turbo Diesel 3 weeks ago, and while this hasn't given us an awful lot of time to experience the vehicle personally, I can vouch for its mechanical ardour. We got a pre-purchase mechanical check and after 148k kilometres the only thing of concern was the battery, which was the original, lasting 8 years.
For a two litre diesel this thing is effortlessly swift for a large car. Great acceleration and cruising up steep hills for this size car.
It has great stock accessories inside. AWD is brilliant.

concern would be if you wanted to take it regularly off-road and would be giving it big hits. The suspension type has no aftermarket alternatives and parts can only be replaced by original Subaru type suspension. This is, of course, unless you'd like to replace the whole suspension system.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Good Car, just high service cost
I have 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i premium automatic CVT from new, and running well until now. But the service cost is high, and need two services each year. The GPS satellite navigation also got maps out of date, but the map upgrade cost also high. The fuel is around 10.5L per 100km, not too bad.

It is really solid vehicle, I love it.

Sturdy but has weak points
2010 outback six speed diesel.
Great long distance car absolutely amazing fuel economy consistent 4.6/4.8l per 100kms. consistent over 60,000kms of travel.
Inherent design flaw based on 1st gear not low enough under weight, towing or steep hill. Once you are going its fine but between 1st and 2nd gear up hill the ratios are too far apart to be happy.
The electric hill start brake activates based upon an arbitrary incline angle. Situations change based on the degree of incline so you wont know if and when the hill start will activate..or not.

Problems with city driving
Dpf light goes to flashing as soon as oil dilution level gets to 10% which requires oil change and reset the sensor ($220). This happened within 2000 kms of similar problem caused by perforated hose ($995) while still under warranty and having only done 64000 kms, with a lot of long kms as well. Apparently I'm driving the car too gently. I was advised to push it harder and take off at lights a bit harder. Not happy.

still taking up the case with subaru who have responded by saying that the car is ONLY suitable for longer distances and higher loads.

Best car i've owned
LOVE my 2011 Outback, such a practical vehicle, there is nothing i can't fit in the back of this thing, from beds to sofas to music gear. And the dog of course. Diesel fuel economy even better than my old petrol Corolla. Excellent service at City Subaru (even though I didn't buy it from them). Never had any mechanical issues, very swift and nimble despite it's size, very comfortable to drive long distances using barely any fuel. Love it but Subaru have short changed themselves as it's so awesome i wont' need to buy another for a long time.

30,000kms on- The best Outback model- so far
So far, the best station wagon/light SUV I have owned. Very nice to drive, comfortable and fuel efficient given the comparatively heavy weight of the Outback. The nicest feature of the vehicle is the CVR (auto) transmission which is also responsible for the excellent fuel economy (when compared to the manual 2005 Outback I owned previously) experienced. 30,000kms down the track I have had no mechanical or electrical issues with the vehicle which has been predominately used for short drives and long trips towing a light camper trailer. My only i...Read more
ssues with the Outback are: : Its low (1,800kg) braked towing capacity and it is for this reason I will be upgrading to a different, heavier vehicle next year in order to tow the larger camper I plan to get, which is a pity. : Dash board land screen lighting being too bright (even when dimmed down) especially when driving at night in the country. : Rather excessive lag time when moving from Drive to Reverse. : Expensive servicing costs (over $400 for the 37,000km service involving the replacement of the A/C pollen filter).Similar opinion? Diesel Manual Outback
First Subaru. Second owner and presently done 105k km. Its OK. The fuel economy is excellent. While I enjoy driving it particularly out on the open road, it really isnt a city car - at least in the manual form. It does however have some problems. The clutch shudders and has done so since I acquired it at 40k km - dont believe it is worn and isnt getting any worse, more the dual mass design in crap. Occasionally it hesitates momentarily and simply wont accelerate - suspect ECU related. There is also a noticeable occasional shudder when driving- ...Read more
like it is running on 3 cylinders. The gearbox is certainly not silky - due to the cable action. Several of the warning lights come on for absolutely no reason - low oil level in particular (learnt to ignore after checking the level)!! I am also waiting for the dreaded DPF to fail ...but maybe that warning light isnt working...!! Oh and yes the support from the dealers in general, if you are having a problem is woeful. Having said all that, otherwise the car isn't to bad. Fix these issues (and support) and I think Subaru would have a real gem.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Turbo Head Failure after 5 years!!!!!
On going problem for the past 8 months where my vehicle did not have any power upon acceleration & a couple of lights appearing on dash. With only 120k on the clock and regular servicing. My mechanic performed diagnostic on vehicle and it showed that the turbo head needed replacing due to soot etc from diesel building up in turbo head. Rebuild of turbo head was not an option. The mechanic confirmed that this is a very common problem for Subaru, diesal Boxer Engine. I took to local Subaru dealership and they performed forced regeneration of DPF...Read more
to clear codes. Acceleration did not improve and lights were still appearing on dash. They finally, diagnosed failed turbo head. Cost to replace, $5000. No explanation as to why it had failed after only 5 years. Very dissappointed with the vehicle as I did not hoon around in my vehicle for the turbo to fail. First and last Subaru for me. Originally thought it was a far more quality car than Ford or Holden. Would never purchase turbo, diesel from Subar again. I have seen VW, turbo diesel do over 250,000km with never a problem.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Overall good vehicle with a couple of weak points
I purchased my 2011 Outback Columbia with 7000km on the clock. It was virtually new and I've looked after it well. Dealer servicing costs are high so after the first service I do my own oil changes. There is almost nothing else for the first few service intervals. If you do your own servicing, make sure you identify the sump and don't drain the CVT transmission housing!
The CVT is an acquired taste. It sometimes takes a while to select the appropriate transmission ratio, so you won't burn off the hoons at the traffic lights. On the othe...Read more

Love driving it but can't wait to get rid of it.
2010 2.0l diesel manual we bought new and now 5 years old.
We bought the car because we live in a rural area and I wanted the wife to be safe when the dirt roads get dry or wet. Being predominantly the wife's car I didn't drive it all that much but loved it when I did especially on long trips. I should say first that it is a nice car, plenty of room front and rear, quiete, economical and powerful. Amazing when the roads get slippery - you just don't notice but my ute slips and slides all over the place. We get around 1100 k's on a tank on lon...Read more

Subaru outback diesel 2014
Our mechanic was really good and explained to us how to avoid carbon build up. check this site for info. Was told car is not deigned for short distance travel. We do 20 km to school 40 km return but soot is a problem. He suggested one long drive a week, in manual mode 5 th gear, 3000 reve to clear soot. Update 12 months on...
This is no longer an issue. No need for long drive. No soot build up at all after Subaru made adjustment to car. Best car we love it.

Good Car
2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i (Petrol, 2.5ltr, CVT trans, GPS & Multimedia kit)
What I like -
Amazing leg room in front and specially back seats and spacious boot. The all-time four wheel drive is very good and you notice the improved traction straight away when compared to a front wheel drive car. I have taken it on dirt tracks and sand and it drives well. The standard all terrain tyres are good size for traction and stability. The ground clearance is perfect for a crossover. The boxer engine keeps the centre of gravity low and the symmetrical a...Read more

Disappointed
Bought from dealership demo model outback my10 with 5000 kms. Still have a 1996 Impreza and had no issues, other than general wear, now over 200,000. Outback issues: clicking noise in vent which would click randomly, sometimes for up to 30 mins. Fixed through warranty only after fault found on another vehicle. I had gearbox crunching from 2nd to 3rd(6speed manual), unless I leave foot on clutch for 3 seconds. Fixed after many visits to service department and now 2 months later it has started again. Seems to be a synchro issue and the clutch is not right, but I can't get Subaru to rectify it as they tell me it's normal. Those are the unfortunate things which will stop me from purchasing a subaru again.
