Please do not buy!
It's comfy, nice to drive and that's where it ends.
I'm one of those suckers that have the J24B engine (2.4L petrol). Nice little unit that's prone to head cracking between moulding ports. It's taken me 4.5 years (and way too many mechanics) to figure out why it's been wanting coolant topped up every month.
Basically I have that fault (Can I attach photo's here, I have one of a nice creamy coffee substance on the inside of my oil cap!).
I'm going to raise hell with this one, even though I have a nice new Unbreakable lined up for pick up in a few days, It's called a dump & run!

An expensive throw away car
Bought a 2006 with less than 180, 000 kms on it, after a month of driving, started making a knocking noise in the motor. Was told it was a timing chain and quoted $3000 to fix it. Got rid of it and bought a 2007 trecker. That's just clocked 80, 000 and now has a big end bearing on the way out. I have owned seven suzuki 4wds, five of them pre 2000, and couldn't fault them. These last two are absolute over priced rubbish.

French Diesel Engine
The Diesel Grand Vitara has a lot going for it conceptually. Good size, comfortable, capable off road but an unfortunate non Japanese choice in engines. I have had injector, and drive problems costing several thousands. While it's running gear is off road capable I wouldn't venture far from help mechanically with this poor choice of diesel motor by Suzuki.

2001 Diesel - mixed bag
Owned a 2001 Grand Vitara Diesel for the last 2 years and 3 months. Had unfortunately an early exit in an accident: car rolled and is a write off - driver had no scratch. Safety (based on this one data point) is great!
Driving: economical (looking at fuel consumption, not at the repair bill) and I liked the power characteristic of the diesel ... no complaints at all
Off road ... 4wd was occasionally useful on the beach and on roads unsuitable for 2wd - and it never let us down, However ... I am neither an off road fanatic nor specialist ... d...Read more

Top Value Vehicle
Excellent value car with enough kit to do the job(s) without "electronic overload".
Constant 4WD a big plus vs "on demand" type.
Terrific performance within it's class. Fuel a little heavy at 11.0 litres/100km but acceptable for the go.
Gearbox works well but could learn from Mitsubishi (Super Select). A bit fidgety in cruise control mode.
Ride is good compromise for type, steering a little light, brakes excellent.
Rear space is adequate although a few more "cubby holes" would be good.
Reliability over 55,000k hasn't been an issue, just a...Read more

i have a 2010 grand vitara v 6 3..2 for 6 years no problem, what you need to do it need to change oil every 5000 km and warm up your engine before you take it out, use good oil no cheap oil and your suzuki grand vitara last forever, 1 driving experience great on the snow .good traction, the interior a bit small but ok for 5 persons the dashboard are at hand reach for everything the leg room great, the fuel on local a bit high on highway better, the engine with a v6 so cool with the power, and so quiet when running I recommend any person wish to buy a SUV go for the V6 GRAND VITARA PETRO you will love it

2006 2.7Lt V6 143KW Trekker Pack Manual has been Excellent! 10 years old now
Purchased new, now at 90,000 km. Clutch replaced at 85,000 for $1300 including parts + white plastic part on a roller off the front of the engine cost $220 including parts which affected the power steering but is all good now.
Engine has been bullet proof, great torque for towing boats or caravan and 4WDing. Very quick off the lights!! Insanely good off-road with very high power to weight ratio and 4L 4H and AWD gearbox.
Seats would be better if they folded flat which is annoying.

Unbelievable endless problems
How can everything be so wrong with a five year old car. We replaced shockers, wheel bearings, starter motor, major exhaust problems still, mechanic still cant identify current running problems, surging, losing power intermittently, leaking power steering, cruise control and CD player not working.
Noisy engine
Shame back seats don't lay flat down when folded down

Ok so far and learning more about it as time go's on...
I helped a friend buy this car after researching.Has done 115,000km so far no mechanical problems
She wanted a small 4WD that had a proper low range gearbox .The Suzuki grand vitara was the only car that had a low range gearbox at that time and she went for the diesel.I drive it often on road and organise the servicing.
I have learnt the following with a focus on preparing the car for off road use as it lacks some things that are important and a bit about servicing
An offload vehicle needs a low range gearbox and good clearance. This ca...Read more
r has one of those things, the low range gearbox.Plus you need good recovery points. Clearance-it is not good, if you lift the vehicle to give it improved clearance with new springs, shocks and camber bolts with wheel alignment is is expensive $1200-$1800.And you need to check it with your insurance company prior. It must also be legal. You could put a higher profile Tyre on it to get it higher, but if you do different to what the manufacturers recommendation, again, need to check with insurance. Also if the car wasn't designed for the bigger tyres it is worth considering the impact on gearing and speedo etc of installing a non recommended Tyre size.I have been told not to by my mechanic.Similar opinion? Nothing but trouble!
I have a 2009 Grand Vitara-comfortable drive, good fuel economy-however- despite low kilometres, full log book servicing at 75 000km have had to have the cam shaft replaced, both rear and front crank shaft seals replaced. Other seals and hoses are weeping and also need replacing. Car has been in northern Australia for most of its life. Terrible treatment from Suzuki Australia when car under warranty. Very distressing.unreliable, expensive to fix. Will never buy a Suzuki again!

Love it!
Bought a used 3 door, 3 years old and 23000km's (2011 model, manual). The original tyres are rubbish, not only off road but on road as well. I drive it every day to work and it commutes very well. Have had it on the beach and thru state forests and national parks and have never had a worry. Putting decent rubber on it helped enormously. The rear seats are permanently folded as I have installed a rear shelf and fridge in the rear so I can take the 2 pug dogs and some gear. The dogs love it as they can see out and help with the driving. My next p...Read more
roject will be to upgrade the suspension so I can tow a small camper trailer. As a two person tourer, it's perfect. As I've had my little Zot for more than twelve months I have added a little extra to this review. I have added a popular 2 inch suspension lift kit to her and the ride has improved immensely both on and off road. I have completed 30000 kms in twelve months and cannot sing enough praises. Don't buy a Vitara!!!
2008 Grand Vitara cracked block at 120,000km and 6 years old in November 2014.
Well looked after and serviced, never off road and Suzuki doesn't want to know and won't help!
I loved the car but after such poor treatment from Suzuki Australia and a car needing a new engine at such a young age I will never ever ever buy another Suzuki again.

Perfect vehicle
Just bought my second Grand Vitara Prestige. Bought 2006 model new which has been passed on to my son. 235000 km and still going like a gem. My son loves it! great family car. Nine years old and travelled all conditions. Air-conditioner just chucked it in, but after surviving Australia's harsh outback conditions, 47 degrees for half the year, pretty good I think.

Don't buy diesel
I bought a 2009 diesel grand vitara back at the end of November (2014). I have had nothing but problems with it. In the 7 or so months I have owned it, one mechanic has had it for a total of 5months & have only had it in my possession all of a month. It has had the injectors replace x2, the turbo replaced, the particulate filter replaced x2, the computer recalibrated, filters, sensors and other parts replaced and countless other issues that are only continuing to get worse with it now only going 50kms before breaking down. The mechanic is at a ...Read more
loss & doesn't know what else he can do to fix it as he has sent it off to different specialist places to try to get the issue resolved. In parts itself, it has cost over $5000. The diesels aren't even a Suzuki engine, they're fiats. Suzuki needs to manufacture their own Diesel engine & fix the numerous issues before I will buy another diesel made by them. I do recommend the grand vitara, as they are nice to drive and get the job done with plenty of space, but just not a diesel.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Bought the 2008 Suzuki Vitara Diesel for the right reasons
We bought the Suzuki Vitara diesel for specific reasons. We bought the 5 door model because we use it as our city car carrying up to 5 adults in comfort. Do not buy the diesel model as a commuter model as the DPF will frustrate you. It is a very green car(zero emmissions) and the exhaust still looks brand new. We bought the diesel model to go touring and tow a campertrailor(640kg). For this, the Suzuki has little competition in it's class. it is a true 4WD and and we don't notice any change when towing. It is economical if you keep the speed do...Read more
wn to 90kmh but people usually want to drive at least 100kph. With a full tank and carrying 40litres and towing 640kg we would range about 1200km.(@ 90km). Unloaded. we've never managed to reach the stated economy where as on previous vehicles I've always bettered the official figure. There was an engine oil leak which was fixed under warranty. The DPF displays occassionally but it is not a problem for us. We have an injector warning but no effect as yet.1 comment

Great vehicle despite some issues
I bought a used 2009 model, 2.4L petrol Grand Vitara about 3 & 1/2 years ago with the aim of owning an economical vehicle with 4WD capability, ability to fly along at 110km/hour and the power to tow a 1.6T single axle caravan. I was initially dubious of the 5 speed manual gearbox, having driven automatics for the past 20 years but soon got used to it. The car has performed well against all these requirements. It has sufficient power for most situations. Going up steep hills with the caravan can be a bit slow - down to 60km/hour. I've been on t...Read more
he beach & down some rugged tracks and the 4WD has handled it well. Fuel consumption can go down to 8.2l/100km on a long flat run and averages 9.3l/100km around town. As the second owner I have done 58,000 km so far. At 130,000km the vehicle was found to be losing coolant. An inspection revealed the cause was a cracked engine block. A new short motor was installed and the opportunity was taken to replace the half -worn clutch plate at the same time. Suzuki came to the party and accepted the engine repair as a warranty claim. This outcome would not have occurred unless the vehicle had been faithfully serviced by a Suzuki authorised workshop, who lobbied on my behalf for the warranty claim. Despite this major repair, I am still satisfied with the vehicle and am now also impressed with the action taken by Suzuki. At 150,000km in May 2017 the ESP/ABS system stopped working. Fortunately the brakes still work. Repair quote was about $2600 for a new actuator . This problem is apparently somewhat common. I have tried to obtain a second hand unit but they are rare . Some minor criticisms - the 90,000km service was quite expensive - $ 890 but then, as the above experience shows, maybe it was actually quite cost effective in the long term. The large hinged rear door cannot be opened when a caravan is hitched up or when a tow bar mounted bike carrier is fitted. (This would be the same with other similarly configured light 4WDs). With the spare wheel mounted on the rear door, the tow bar had to be extended out to fit the bike carrier. No bluetooth installed on this year model. Easy to drive, handy 4WD capability, high drivers seating - good visibility, reasonably low fuel consumption. Limited rear access and expensive servicing.Similar opinion? A Lot to like about the Suzuki Grand Vitara Diesel
Bought new, travelled 20ks, Great country car. Due to lack of boot space vehicle probably more suited to couple than family. Interior a bit dated and could do with some colour to cheer it up. Standard tyres only any good on highway . A/T tyres improve dirt road driving but tyre size not common so had to compromise and also pay a bit more. Great tow vehicle for smaller van/camper trailer, hardly notice my 800kg camper in tow and is rated to 2000kg. V/good fuel economy cruising at 95 kph but drinks diesel at higher speeds even when no...Read more
t towing. Home servicing difficult due to location of oil filter and plastic under body protection next to useless. I expect timing belt change at 75k to be quite costly due to labour involved and high price of Suzuki parts. I found buying accessories to be more expensive and harder to find than other similar vehicles such as Nissan Xtrail etc A clutch kit and fitting is around 3 times more expensive than many common vehicles. Some say vehicle is slow off the mark and has notchy gear box but I have not found this to be the case but I do limited city driving and it is a proper 4wd. Changing from H to L range and back can be a bit tricky at times, Suzuki need to look at this. The diesel engine is a Renault 1.9 lt and while not common in Australia there are millions of them in Europe so it has been tested over time. I would buy again but not diesel because no auto gear box or prestige options such as leather and would not recommend diesel engine for people who do a lot of stop start driving or short trips. Also the extra cost of diesel engine probably not worth it unless you religiously stick to 90-95 kph, over this and it drinks fuel like a small 6 cyl. Ride comfort on long trips. Standard safety equipment. Real 4wd ability. Good fuel economy when driven 90 - 95 kph. Exterior looks. Costly timing belt change, difficult to do simple home oil change due to location of filter, cabin could do with some colour . Very small boot space unless rear seat folded down. Accessories often more expensive than other brands.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

awesome 2002 2.5l manual
Full chassis little 4x4. Not a soft roader like the new ones. Awesome little 4x4 goes real good for what it is. Not bad on fuel and I am terrible for economy. Little narrow bodied for bulky kids seats so three adults in the back would be a tight squeeze. Cheep to look after with timing chain not a firm believer in timing belts myself. Quite capable in the bush. With xrox and side sliders and a 40mm lift will be real good off road. Shift on the fly Auto hubs work smoothly. All in all a great car.

Excellent vehicle
Purchased a new Vitara v6 auto petrol AWD in 2005 and have done 50000 kms, and it still looks like a new vehicle. It's performance is fantastic and road holding and cornering ability outstanding. Driving position is just right and pick up from a standing position very quick. Have it serviced twice yearly from private mechanic and have never had a problem in all this time. Dealership servicing was too expensive, and unreliable. Running costs are What you would expect, a pleasant surprise after owning a challenger which was far more expensive and like a truck to drive. Can't pick a fault with Vitara, roomy handles well and is always reliable and affordable. What more could you ask?

good news, that’s a wonderful car with best quality
Probably got neglected while under warranty as Suzuki service under warranty only extends to oil and filter changes. If they do pull something apart check the bolts as half the time they either forgot to torque the bolts properly or did not put them all back. Get a service manual on CD/DVD and learn to do your own service and maintenance. Japanese made Suzukis are good cars and will go for 500k+ on original engine and gearbox as long as they are maintained by the book, unfortunately you won't get that from dealers as they would rather sell you a new car then look after the one they already sold you.

I have a Grand Vitara 2015 model and have noticed the boot doesn't unlock when the drivers door is unlocked. If I want to put something in there I have to make sure doors are closed, lock the car and then unlock it again with a double click. Am I missing something? It has to be easier. Also can you open the boot with the key?
1 answer
i have the 2013 grand vitara prestige so not sure if it is different but if you want all doors to open you click the button on the handle twice, (or the remote twice) same with the rear door if you click it once it will only open the rear door, if you click it twice it will open all doors :)....no you cant use a key in read door (unless it might be different to your model)

Me again retracting my criticism of the Renault Diesel injectors. I foolishly filled up with petrol not diesel. The injector engine warning worked well. Sorry Suzuki.
