Taubmans Water Based Enamel (page 2 of 3)

I used for a commercial project according to instructions because of the need for a low odour fast drying product. Applied according to instructions, several thin coats with ample drying time in between. Tin advertises a fast drying paint -- was marking up with fingerprints and scuffing days after final coat applied. Had to completely strip paint and start again. 4 days lost. Complained to Taubmans, extremely disappointed with response. No niceties, Was told it takes a week to cure -- nowhere does it state this on the tin or the info sheet to be found online.
Don't believe the hype about the product. Had they simply offered to refund the unused tin I wouldn't have bothered writing the review.

I found this paint amazing. Coverage is excellent. I water it down slightly as it is a thicker paint but I’d rather buy thicker paint and water it down slightly than pay for thin watered down paint. I found two coats gave a beautiful finish and covered evenly. I can’t understand some of these reviews as it’s honestly a paint that has impressed me so much I’ve considered writing to Taubmans to tell them (which I never do). I also wrap my brushes immediately in glad wrap if not completing my painting straight away and haven’t had any problems at all with my brushes. I used the product with a roller on cupboard doors and brushes on skirting and all look fantastic.

Bought this paint from Bunnings as suggested by a salesperson in store .the paint is very thick, when used the paint brush it left the streak marks, tried roller paint being thick it was difficult.
Won’t advise anyone to use this paint

I'm not a professional painter, but I was born into a family of them and handed a loaded brush the moment I could walk (though not for long - handing a toddler a brush full of lead-based paint went about as well as you can imagine). My point is, while I'm certainly not a skilled professional, I'm not a complete novice either, and I have to preface this review with that information because I do think people who don't paint often might struggle with this product without proper preparation.

I sanded door trims to fine finish, finish from prior tradesperson was average. Spent hours sanding filling then two coats 3 in 1 primer surfacer. Sanded lightly then put first coat of colour, white, and within seconds of applying would skin so could not spread coat out to even finish leaving heavy brush marks. I am not impressed at all. Unluckily paid by credit card and itemized Bunnings receipt thrown out. Also bought colour for door, now sorry I bought Taubmans Ultimate Enamel.

There's so much to say about other reviews here. But I will first comment on the paint...

I used the Alkyd (note this is different from 'water based enamel') for the first time yesterday. I am a painter by trade and have always preferred oil based paints. I was painting trim and I have got a result that is equal to oil based enamel gloss. I'm very happy with the result. The gloss is as glossy as oil, and the finish is bloody close to being as good too. But, I did have to take more care - maybe because I'm new to it...

I have been airing out the room for 3 days, but it still has a very strong paint smell. Only painted the trim around one door and one window. And the room reeks. It smells like turps paint. There is no way that this product is low VOC. False advertising, this paint is not low odour.

Used it over mdf cupboards, drawers and doors in kitchen. Correct priming and sanding is required to get the best finish. Works well of the brush and flows adequately off a trim roller. Looks good and sets nice and hard... No problems....

Seen a lot of reviews on this paint saying it was hard to use with a brush or it didn't cover properly or it destroyed brushes or was coagulated when bought from Bunnings! Absolute rubbish from people that obviously can't paint! It's a brilliant paint. For a start, don't buy your paint from Bunnings as a lot of their stock has been sitting for ages and of course paint goes off. Buy it directly from a Taubmans outlet. Don't use 2 dollar brushes either. Monarch make decent brushes and I always use a 60mm Monarch cut in brush for sills and architr...

I wish I had read reviews before I spent $77 on 4 litres. It applies like its got no substance to the paint and goes on patchy and uneven. This was using short nap roller and paint brush. Poor coverage meant 3 top coats trying to get a decent finish. A lot of hours of wasted labour. I have always been happy with Taubman's low sheen and ceiling paint but give the gloss a big miss.

Ultimate Alkyd Enamel is great when sprayed but don't bother using it with brush and rollers. Destroys brushes as well if you don't wash regularly whilst painting. As a painting contractor, I'm sticking to Dulux AquaEnamel, with all its faults, for the time being. If Taubmans somehow makes this product more friendly to brush and roll application, I would consider using again because it does give a nice sheen.

Not happy with this product, and found it very difficult to apply with any satisfactory result.

I bought 10 litres of this Ultimate for painting windows and skirting boards etc. the first tin of paint had coagulated into something like cottage cheese. Bunnings replaced it. The second tin, when I started painting, it rapidly became clear to me that this product just ruined any previous prep work. I found it's impossible to over-paint after about two minutes, and found brush marks are virtually impossible to remove. Thankfully Bunnings refunded, and I bought 10 l of an oil based semi-gloss, Now happy!

Check you tube first so that the paint is applied correctly. I used the alkaloid paint and had no problems .
Overall a very good product. Use a foam roller then brush lightly with a 6 inch brush. You can also use a sponge to slightly moisten the surface before painting.

I have used acylic glosses years ago and was unhappy with the results- quick drying and leaving brush marks. The oil gloss gives great results but is so so messy.
People had said that water based gloss has come a long way so I decided to give the Taubmans Endure doors and trim paint a go and was pleasently surprised at how smoothly and easily it went on. Granted the gloss level is not as good as an oil based gloss but clean up was so much better.
I will have to wait and see how it holds up over time.

As with many other reviews, I agree this paint is so annoying to use. I goes on patchy with a roller and streaky with a brush. It is generally impossible to overlay a smooth join even when the paint has just gone on less than a minute before. Every now and then I must have done something right and it gives a very smooth glossy finish. The rest is streaky or bubbly. I rang Taubmans after first using it for more advice, and as I was following all instructions, all they could suggest was adding 5% water, which helped a little.

Not sure if the good revues are from professional painters but as a novice I found this to be the worst paint I have ever used.
I loved the idea of wash up in water but found the following:
.It goes on thick but trying to overbrush leaves lines, appears to dry or become sticky very quickly.
.try to apply a bit thinner and it has no coverage even on the second and third coat still leaving an uneven finish.
.wash up in water? paint appears to dry on the brush very quickly so cleanup isn't as easy as it should be.

Can not understand why some low rating reviews have been said about this product, but having used it for a while now I would never go back to oil enamels. It wins hands down on the comparable Dulux aqua enamel. Using good quality brushes and rollers the product just goes on with ease and then flattens out smooth. Love it for windows, architraves and skirtings.

Thus would have to be the most frustrating, infuriating paint that I have ever used. It goes on like thin grease, with roller marks impossible to blend in. This paint does not "flash over" like any half decent paint would, and this is a paint that I wouldn't paint our dog house in. One star and that is more than it deserves.

Normally I wouldn't bother doing a review, however this product gave really good results and its hard to find good paints for my business as a few paints have been discontinued. We've been using high end paints for over 30 years.
Minor issue - its important to let the paint cure properly as it seems to take a bit longer than normal water based acrylics. I have really tested this product as we need to know if any new paints will work for us. If your interested copy this address in your browser for what I've found.

Very disappoint spent lots of time applying, will have to go and purchase a better quality paint tomorrow and start again.
Was recommend in paints department of bunnings,and to make it worse I have lost receipt so total loss of time and money.
I was not happy after six coats the worst paint I have ever used.

This paint after three coats,plus two of 3 in 1 sealer/undercoat, is still not good enough coverage. Don't waste your money. Research paints before buying.
I really wish I had. It's that bad it should be free.

Unfortunately, I read these comments to late, I have painted the interior of at least 15 houses and because I liked the Taubmans Endure I thought I would try the expensive Ultimate for a really high gloss finish on my own house. This paint is crap don't buy it, you get the same result from a tin of the $20 for 4 litres at Bunnings or Masters don't waste your money. It runs everywhere, I have tried undercoat sealer to help but it is still very patchy after 3 coats and I am taking it back for a refund.

Bunnings kid talked us into buying this paint for interiors doors as we used Taubmans for the walls and even though we had a grey undercoat on doors, he did not tell us that you would need it - so kids do not know what they are selling to customers and are not trained up for it. 6 coats later of painting with this grease like paint, you could still could see the lines of the roller even leaving it for 2 hours to see if it would recitfy with another coat. Took it back and will never use any Taubmans again for the hours wasted for one door!

Painting my fourth house now and always ahappy dulux customer. Thought I would give taubmans a go this time around with the water based enamel for trims and doors. After 2 undercoats I am now up to my third top coat and it looks awful and patchy.
I wanted the house to look fresh and clean and now it just looks dirty and cheap. For downstairs I am going back to dulux and then will have to repaint upstairs alll again. If it's worth doing...

Taubmans water based paint does not stand up to normal wear and tear in my opinion. I painted 8 doors having followed all the instructions as given at Bunnings only to find that the vacuum scratched it off. I did contact Taubmans and was given the same instructions on the tin, which I had followed.
