Great modem with backup sim when network is offline
It came as a package when we signed up with Telstra NBN. Easy to setup, literally a plug and play affair.
I'm happy with the back up Sim just in case we loose NBN connection. If it goes on backup mode, Telstra will contact you and try to fix your connection issues. This happened to me without even calling them. How's that for service!

False advertising terrible.
The modem will only switch to 4G backup when there is no Broadband signal. When signal is so low that your devices tell you you have no wifi.... Telstra smart modem does not kick over to 4G.
Basically needs threshold raised off zero.

No phone cable and no set-up guide in box
I signed up for Telstra and modem was supposed to arrive last week but didn't arrive. After many phone calls with StarTrack, they found today that the address that Telstra has provided was wrong and the parcel has been returned to Sender, and will take another week or so to be delivered to me. No worries at all, I then arranged to go into store to collect the modem. Done that today and some items are missing from the box (set-up guide and phone cable). Called the store to inquire about these items, and the person said I'm not meant to get them,...Read more
as ALL the modem boxes have phone cable and setup guide missing.... And told me to use my own phone cable and go on the internet to access the setup guide. Which I find very odd, as it clearly states these items in 'What's in the box' section...very weird.. Most of the staff are very helpful but execution needs more work.Similar opinion? Excellent Modem
Received the Telstra Smart Modem Gen2 when we cutover to NBN in March. It is excellent compared to our previous Telstra Gateway Max modem. It was easy to set up and the wifi coverage is better then the Telstra Gateway Max. We have no issues with the modem and is very happy with it's performance so far.

Good, easy to use
The modem is sleek and fits in your house very well, the Internet speed is usually pretty fast, however the connection drops out at least every hour, and I need to reset the modem, which gets kind of irritating when I'm in the middle of something.

Average but comes as free
I signed with Telstra years ago in 2014, the first device Technicolor TG797n was great. Noticed the network keeps dropping contacted Telstra and signed NBN FTTC plan in January 2020 hence got a replacement Smart Modem Gen 2, surprisingly it's so bulky, the power adapter has also changed you can't re-use the previous one. Performance wise it works ok, but when the internet is down the backup 5G is slow. Considering it's free with my bundle plan it's average product.

Absolute rubbish.
Brand new GEN 2 which only works on 5gz and not 2.4. So reverting back to my old modem. Thanks Telstra for wasting a day of my time. So basically don't bother with this.

Telstra normally supplies rubbish equipment (CG3100 arrgh!!) - however this is a cracker
TL;DR? One of the best consumer wireless routers out there - and if you're with Telstra includes phone and 4G backup.
Our household has a pretty decent network setup - a USG with 2 Unifi Access Points. Prior to the NBN, our CG3100D2 modem was "bridged" into this network.
With NBN, Telstra sent us the Smart Modem Gen 2. I disconnected our USG, and fired up the shiny new device. Everything configured very quickly - phone, internet etc.
However the revelation for me was how bl**dy good the WiFi was. Walking around the house (huge 6 bedroom)...Read more
with the Wifiman app, there was Wifi in most places. There aren't too many routers with this capability. And if you don't want to stick with Telstra - fine - this will work with most other providers. Most of the wireless routers they provide (Netcomm NF18 comes to mind) are not as good as this. If was to compare this to the TP-Link Archer C7 for wifi - the C7 is 2 stars to this one's 5... It has good wifi. It's easy to configure. And it's stable when connected.Purchased in November 2021.

Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 - Best Modem/Router, until now
I was quite impressed with this model device (LH1000), easy to set up, excellent user interface and enough controls to be useful. Also it has very strong wifi throughout my two storey Villa. The device is 6 months old and the wifi has died gradually, weaker and weaker signal, until nothing. I'm waiting for Telstra to provide a solution.

WiFi is terrible - Only works if you're sitting right next to it.
Recently got Telstra nbn and now I get constant drop outs and like most others are saying when this modem swaps to the mobile network it's absolutely useless & non-existent. The wifi is terrible - it only works when you are right next to it.

Good Modem, Strong Fast WIFI, Quality Control is hit and miss though.
Modem is fast, Has strongest wireless signal I've ever had from a Telstra Modem, 4G Backup is a nice feature for those on unreliable HFC NBN connections but its limited to 6/1Mbps speeds should be made sligthly faster.
Unfortunately the manufacturing process is letting them down I was told that I needed to replace my modem even though at the end my original was working fine. The replacement I got was very buggy and the 4G module kept diapering after 48 Hours and would go slow another replacement was sent out after much discussion and has been fine ever since.

This modem does not work. First problem was always restarting. It would just turn off then take ages to restart. Second was the wifi just stoppped working altogether. Will never turn on after that.

Telstra sets new lows in customer service and performance
I signed up with Telstra for a package. This product includes this modem (well do pay for it separately so include is really the wrong word). One of the attractions was the internet speed they boast and as I work from home the failsafe 4G should the connection fail.
Since then I have been plagued with issues. I am not even getting 50% of the bandwidth I signed up for. The are frequent dropouts and the backup 4G is really as good as non existant. On my phone I get about 50Mb over 4G. With this modem in the same position im struggling to get 5Mb...Read more
. Effectively rendering the whole point of it as pointless. So this Modem is hopeless and pointless. It is in now way a backup. So I chatted to Telstra. Really disappointed so far I was about to find out how much more their service had slipped. A job was logged and I got a reference number. It used to be having to ring up and ask about how an issue was progressing was a failing. Telstra now consider that this is the way to do business. I was told they would monitor it and I needed to call back in a day or 2 to see how things where progressing. Telstra now see a customer call back as an expectation, rather than a failure. Talk about lowering the ball. This is a problem on your end Telstra. You need to slove and manage it. Now throw the responsibility back on the customer to manage. This way of thinking is a new low, but in it you seem to be leading the charge.Purchased in December 2021 for $2,259.00.

No Issues At All
We connected to NBN in November and have not had any issues at all. Speed is faster than our ADSL although we have had a couple of slow connections with no explanation, but it is rare. We have this one and the smaller black NBN modem as well, and aside from only one unexplained outage, we have not had any issues.
The man who installed it was prompt texting us the day before what time he would be coming, whcih was a Saturday morning, and then calling on his way to our home, and got the job done efficiently. He made sure we had set it up okay a...Read more
nd where to find the password for this, and that we understood how it worked from explaining the front light colour changes and what they mean, right down to it's battery back up so you have a connection when Telstra was running maintenence. For those wondering - the light at the front changes colour to indicate what is happening, a quick read of the brochure will tell you what colour has what meaning. My only peeve, and it is a very small peeve, the modem is quite large and had to be put on a table in the corner of our living room where the NBN box outside fed into, which I don't like because I am quite fussy about where things are placed, but we live in an old home with only one power outlet in each room, which is in the corner. We can't do anything about that as we rent, so I just popped a plant in front of it. At least it was in the corner of the room! Overall since our switch we have had no big problems, and smaller issues were quickly solved by Telstra.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2
I had the NBN connected on Wednesday 22 January 2020. Telstra sent me the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 in advance, the NBN guy arrived with the NBN connection. He promptly and courteously phoned to confirm on his way to our home and took great care to rewire so that we could have it close to the computer and modem and under two hours we had the whole system up and running with rewiring and drilling and dropping wires down from the ceiling etc all done efficiently and speedily . Excellent installer from Telstra.

Very impressive, modern modem.
Telstra provided this modem as a free replacement when the old one stopped working, probably because of ADSL line quality deterioration. In my opinion, they offered the new modem instead of fixing the line. Anyway, the new modem is extremely good. It synced on the existing line and speed was good. Wifi is very good throughout the house. The 4G backup is also very good but too slow to use instead of the fixed line service.
No problem with placement of status lights .. there is one on the front that changes colour if there's any problem.
Overall, a first-class, modern product.

Terrible design
Forget the performance and the rest, who would design a modem with the all the status lights on the back face where the leads are plugged in! Aren't those the lights one wants to see when we are checking the status?
And where is the on/off switch? Is it the WiFi switch?
Maybe the Gen 3 will return to a sensible design.

Similar drop outs and loading of pages
Drops out All the time and slow internet page loading- absolutely agree. Rang Telstra who will do a test on the line tomorrow. However, it sounds like an All to familiar story. This product does meet its designed criteria. I rang Telstra Premium IT support, which I subscribe to, but they were ambivalent.
Will have to go back to my OLD Modem, which at least didnt drop OUT as I recall and had a reasonable range-having the latest is not always better. I would suggest there could be lot of problems with their latest modem.
I would say there may...Read more

Don't bother with Telstra it's not worth the hassle when you have problems!!
Because my story with Telstra is so long, I will summarise in dot points:
1. Bought modem and plan, set it up easily and fast, had great internet with high speeds.
2. There was an electrical storm which affected the connection and I had no internet (this is not Telstra's fault at all, it was the storm's fault)
3. After much troubleshooting over the phone with no solution, and no internet for 3 weeks, I phone the ombudsman of telecommunications and lodged a complaint (as Telstra wanted me to pay for the services I was not using).
4. The ombuds...Read more

Our Telstra smart modem gen 2. Had a malfunction 8 days ago. No orange light anymore, no wifi in the house, anything connected by wifi out, including smart tv.
Now l have been on the phone to Telstra 3 times in 4 days, each time approx for 2 hours. No help, they keep telling me there is no problem from their end, we even reset the modem on their instructions.
I’m totally frustrated, can’t get a technician out, can’t talk to anyone, I’m paying $90 month, it’s terrible, nobody wants to listen, isn’t there someone in Australia who can send a technician out. Don’t know what to do next

Can use use smart modem Gen 2 with adsl we are not on nbn

Yes you can it has an adsl/vdsl port that you can plug a regular phone lead into. Just be sure to setup with your Bigpond login details to authenticate. I am pretty sure this is the only modem that they sell now for all connections anyway.
