Bought new from TomTom - turned out to be old stock with dead battery
Update - after much wasted time and no help from TomTom I found out that this model had a problem with faulty batteries not holding charge. I replaced the battery and voila! the problems went away. Apparently even if you have external power connected a faulty battery will scramble it. I heard that TOMTOM had these sitting on the shelf since 2016 before clearing them out on sale in 2022. That pretty much killed the li-ion batteries which don't like being left completely drained for years and tend not to recover. Same applies to any tomtom model
... Read morethat has sat for a few years. The battery isn't isolated and the unit drains it to death even if turned off. Bottom line is if your tomtom plays up change the battery. Original Review: Loses its location all the time. frequently freezes and stops responding. Often won't start up when you turn on power. Battery life is dismal. Even after three firmware updates it's still got the same issues. It's pretty obvious the problems are at basic design level and unfixable. I find it hard to believe tomtom didn't just recall this model and replace it. The reputational damage is massive.Garbage - AVOID at all costs
Worked well for a while then needed to update map.
The updater deleted Australia and failed to put an update on device
Multiple chats to TOMTOM who admitted they had tech issues and had reset my account
None of this worked
So I have a device that is useless.
There is no point in an NZ map when thats not where I am I am in Australia.
The NZ map updated - even though I did not tell it to.
Don't waste your money on TOMTOM
Has NO battery life. As soon as you take it off charge it shuts down
Difficult to start requiring multiple attempts
Numerous errors and wrong turns. Just not worth the hassle
Do not buy a tomtom - I won't ever again!
Tomtom via 52 purchased 27 march, 2020 for $149.25 (includes discount because of previous faulty GPS which they would not fix)
I have used TomTom for many years and until the last couple they have been fairly good - but this Via 52 takes the cake as the most awful, hard to use, difficult to navigate GPS I have ever had the displeasure to use.
The company will not help in any event, no matter what.
The batteries are Absolutely hopeless. (((appalling)))
The road maps are overall not too bad, however the speeds are long out of date and of no use
Terrible - until it failed completely. Smash it with a hammer
Awkward to use, awful system to record favourites, frequently detours you through housing estates to save 2 seconds even though you are on a main road. We have had TomToms for 15 years, they just keep getting worse. Now it has stopped working. It is reasonably new so it may be under warranty. My wife spent ALL DAY trying to download upgrades but it never finished them it just sat there trying to do ...something. Then the worst part of all is the TomTom website and the 'help' system, they are determined never to be held to account. What a nightmare, it looks brand new but it will a pleasure to smash it with a hammer.

I went back to my old GPS as the Tom Tom unit was so hopeless
I purchased the unit about 2.5 years back and I have basically sent it to the bin to be replaced by a very old unit that has old maps (but works). The touch screen has to be pressed hard and really can't be used on the move. Absolutely nothing appeals to me with the unit so it now is sitting in my e-waste bin

I have had Tom Tom GPS navigators since 2009(5). They have all been OK for most applications. After a couple of years they just stop working. I purchased a Tom Tom Via 52 from Harvey Norman on the 12th of August 2020, I had difficulty getting it set up even though I have already an existing mydrive account and have had no problem with the site in the past. This unit could not get set up and would freeze when trying to work the functions after it was fully charged. There is no Tom Tom support in Australia, rang Harvey Norman twice for advice, they were unable to help either. Took it back to Harvey Norman next day and got a full refund. This unit should not be offered for sale, it is rubbish. Do Not Buy

I have a Garmin from 2014 which I use for work and has served me well in all that time. Thought I would treat myself to a new GPS perhaps with updated features which I could use on our next road trip holiday. Straight out of the box I could tell that the interface is really clunky. Once I started to load it up with road trip routes and POIs via their much vaunted MyDrive Connect, it became even clunkier. Seriously, in 2020 I expected much better than this. No wonder smartphones are killing this segment. In hindsight I would prefer not to have spent this much money on a GPS.

This model is the biggest waste of time and money ever. I put in a destination and it sets the route then i get to the fisrt corner and it starts asking which way to go .I have turned off suggestions and anything else that could affect it. It is supposed to be a gps, showing me how to get to a destination. If i have to tell it i wouldnt need it in the first place.Third and final tom tom gps for me.

TOM TOM Rip Off
Due to the WNRO I have been advised that my model can't be updated and TOMTOM have kindly sent a discount offer to purchase a new unit. WNRO is something that has not come out of the blue but has been known for decades--why would TOMTOM design devices that are upgradeable via software updates of any other reason than to make as much money as possible? Cynical I know!
This is despite the fact that my current unit was recommended by TOMTOM 2 years ago to replace my previous unit that TOMTOM advised was no longer supported that again was purchase
Never buy this model
This model is far harder to use than my previous model which could no longer support upgrades.
The route maps are totally useless. My previous model had detailed routes which you could modify if needed. for example, avoid a very busy intersection. With the Via the map is like a child's drawing. It is also very hard to add addresses, the keyboard is quite unresponsive and addresses have to be entered and reentered often. Very tedious.
It holds no charge, unlike the previous model where I could enter an address while still at home, check the rout
Really disappointed!
The maps are somewhat OK but not great! If you travel countryside, be careful, it may navigate to some random roads!! The voice navigation also misled me a few occasions. The speed limits were inaccurate in many occasions.

Bad maps and terrible phone connectivity
It is a terrible device.
I bought it 3 months ago and I have daily nightmare trying to connect the phone to the device on every single ride as the device cannot keep the phone connected.
The hand free is very bad and usually the caller cant hear my voice.
The maps are not updated, the speed limit in the area around my home has been 40 km/hour for ages, but still show 50 km/h on the device screen.
I don't recommend it any more.
Disappointed
Happy with the maps, however I had constant problems with the unit finally it overheated and stopped, had to wait 2 months for a replacement, My I phone never connected properly and was told it may be the phone, I upgrade my phone and still have problems. this is my third TomTom the first two were great this one is very disappointing
A total fail as far as I'm concerned.
Totally happy with my old, now unsupported TomTom, - even to the extent of replacing the internal battery to prolong the useful life. When I received advice that my device would not be supported with map updates into the future, I accepted the upgrade offer to the Via 52.
When I went through the setup process, everything seemed to work satisfactorily but when I attempted to use the device, I ran into operational difficulties such as not being able to invoke all the menus. Thinking perhaps I had missed some of the initial patches or an upgrad
