I love my Rukus

published

I bought my Rukus build 3 new mid 2014, so it is almost 5 years old now. In that time I have clocked up 92,000. Three new sets of wiper blades, two new sets of tyres and a new battery a few months ago - and that is it ... nothing goes wrong with this car! Serviced as per the log-book. Lovely to drive, comfy and roomy. Great heating and cooling. Carries as much as I need to. Family/friends are always impressed with the rear seats (fullsize) and how much room there is. I have no intention of selling it now that I can't trade up to a newer model. People still stop to look at it and it is the only one (of this colour and without the decals) in our community. This car is dependable and reliable and can do whatever I need it to do.

Purchased in September 2021 at Mandurah Toyota.

The basics, chic, camry engine, oomph

published

Awesome horsepower. Family wagon. Easy to park. OK handling. 10.8 litre per 100km fuel for me — not too bad. At 185,000 kms now, still smooth. Comfy. I’ve heard: You either love “boxy” design, or hate it, nothing in between. The feeling of being on the outside when you’re inside. Small boot but Rukus is good for reversing in tight spots. Always trust a Toyota.

bought the very well equipped 2015 build 2 at 12000kms... now done 25000kms... great car with great power and equipment levels... climate control, leather, cruise etc etc...the air con is colder than any other cars i have had up to date and the internal roominess is impressive... getting in and out is easy due to slab sides and good height...on the open road its a real pleasure and good handling...my average fuel consumption since purchase is 8.2 to 8.4ltr/100...i have run it on E10 since i got it andthe 2.4ltr engine on a 4 speed auto never seems to work hard and overall can highly recommend this vehicle,,,

Adore my Voodoo Blue Baby!!!

published

The moment I clapped eyes on this car I new I had to buy it. I bought it that very same day, a Toyota Rukus Halo. I've had her for four more months and I love it more than the day I bought it. I adore the colour and the drive, and I love that she doesn't have too many bells and whistles, and the keyless entry is really really handy. The boot space is larger than it looks. To be honest the only thing that is a let down is the excess bass in the sound system and that you cannot fully customise the sound. And you can run through full I've you run her too hard and fast. Beside that i love my rukus, it's bold and load and suits me.

Great car

published

I'm really happy with my Rukus Halo limited edition. I bought it second hand over a year ago. Mileage is 40,000km and nothing at all has gone wrong.
My elderly Dad finds it easy to get in and out.
The only negative things, I find the accelerator and the brake a little too far to the left (mine is RHD) and there is reduced visibility around the driver's external mirror. Also the drive train noise is a little more than what I would have expected.
I get 10l per 100km.
It's really handy for use as a station wagon, and my mountain bike can fit in the back.

Amazing Car, Drives As Good As It Looks.

published

With its distinctive looks, it's a real head turner. Very well designed in so many aspects. Everything in the interior and exterior just seems to be in the right place. Great safety credentials and outstanding Toyota finish it is car that few people know about but those who do love love love their Rukies. This being my fourth Toyota and the best it has an incredible feel for the road. Younger people love them for the edgy looks, whilst older people love the amazing accessibility in all seats and for great height in the boot. Can't think of anything I don't love about my Rucky, just keep in mind it does have a 2.4l engine which was a bit of a jolt coming from an 1.2l Echo.

Best car I've had

published

This is my 7th Car and my daily commuter. I do 90k a day in peak traffic. Not bored of it yet and Ill hang onto it till i hit 100,000k. Just hit 63,000 and had since a demo due to the price. 4 Speed auto was my only concern when I bought but it works fine with this engine. Avg fuel I am getting is 8.5-8.6 and I have a heavy foot. Car is very cool in summer due to dark tints and angel of windows. Great for moving. Friends bag me out for having it but they are quite surprised how good it drives. I would highly recommend.

Still the best car for my wife

published

It has been a couple of years now and the Rukus is still the best car for my wife, no panel or bumper damage as she can gage the corners of the car, only a little rim damage! No problems at all with car, just getting a little small in the back for our 60 kg French mastiff, but have a landcruiser for him if we have too, still highly recommend the vehicle, I think this one will be around for a few more years with us yet.

It's better than it looks

published

Just spent a day driving this car and was surprised how good it was. With gentle driving the engine is sweet and smooth as butter, however due to the dated 4 speed auto box things get nasty when you push on. Very noisy and harsh and fuel consumption becomes a huge issue. Also handling becomes ponderous, does not inspire confidence. The interior is different but interesting, great cabin space and comfy seats, let down by the small boot.
This car would suit gentle drivers.

Perfect family car

just did 19k on build 1, no quality issues so far, 2.4 has more than enough punch, it's more spacious inside than the exterior would suggest . Came from a starlet, thought it would use a lot more fuel but it's pretty good actually .

My Fave Car!

published

This is my fave car. Just recently sold mine to get a car with better fuel consumption.

I've had Rukus build 2 for 2.5 years. Two elderly lady asked me about the car since they really love the boxy look :).

- Rukus' fuel consumption on 98RON can get me up to 580-600km.
- It's very spacious for both front and rear passengers.
- 300L boot space (not much but working well due to 60/40 arrangement)
- Love the unique look of Rukus, always feel special driving in it
- Build 2 come with the leather seat. It's good to wipe the seat with the leather moisturizer once in a while to keep it fresh
Very spacious, powerful engine, unique look

Excellent Vehicle

published

Being a baby boomer, bought one because of the ingress and egress aspect, it is so easy to get in and out of, and relatively low to the ground. Fuel economy is quite good 7.8L/100k, and love the layout of the dash, so easy to see everything, awesome sound system with lotsa bass if required.

Interior room is so spacious, everyone who travels in it can't believe how much room it has, can be quite deceiving when looking at it externally, had reversing sensors fitted which makes it so easy to park, bought the build 2 version so it's very well equipped.
Heaps of power with the 2.4 litre.
Ingress and Egress, spacious, sound system, climate control, cruise control, fixed price servicing.
Noisy on coarse bitumen.

would recommend to anyone, designed for the younger market but driven by the older market, due to its ease of entry and simple controls.it also attracts a lot of attention for its boxy looks and outlandish colour{voodoo blue with white flames} it handles all we throw at it and is fairly economical on a 8000k trip up and around cairns from victoria it wasnt much worse than our previous corolla, which we have had 6 of i dont think we will go back to the corollas these are more fun.
keyless entry, auto manual trans,,economy, toyota reliability, roomy, reasonable pricing.
the voodoo blue paint seems to be soft, marks easy, and must be chamiosed as soon as washed as it water marks badly

Love the funky look of the car. It is fun, reliable, economical and easy to drive.
Would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want a conservative look in a sedan/hatchback.
Keyless entry and ignition.
The car is built on a Corolla wheelbase, but feels much larger from the inside. Passengers in the back seat are impressed with the amount of legroom.
Is easy to get in and out of. Plenty of room in the boot space for luggage.
Has great pick up and holds the road well.
Approx 8L/100km.
Blind spot when looking out the corner of the driver window. Have to concentrate and make sure you spot through the corner before you turn.
Too much bass through the speakers. Bass has to be turned right down.

The Toyota Rukus actually has the 2.4 litre engine shared with the Camry, not the 1.3/1.5L engines used in the Yaris...

An excellent little car, due to the car enjoying bits from already proven cars, this makes it a great car. RAV4 engine is powerful yet economic and the few added extras (Alloys, Stripes, Tinted Windows etc) make it a real eye catcher.
Totally reliable and a joy to drive
A 5/6 speed bopx would have been better

Im thinking of getting a used 2012 model, but have heard issues with engine oil consumption on these engines due to pistons. There was a recall in US, but not Australia. Has anyone had issues here with engine oil consumption.

Interesting--2012 model? I've only known of 2010 models in Australia. Anyway, I have a 2010 Rukus Build 1. On the issue of engine oil consumption, in my situation, I have to use fully synthetic 10W-40 oil (which is good for the engine) just so it runs as far as it could towards 10,000kms, and i do get to 8,000kms before the engine light comes up. I have 2 options: Car service and maintenance every 8,000kms; top up with 1L engine oil and let it run to 10,000kms before making an appointment with my auto mechanic. I have been doing the later, but might opt to do the former in the future, maybe. Camry engines, somewhere in there, there's this part that burns the engine oil dry; not a leak. Mine's good horsepower and doing OK at 210,000kms now. If it isn't because of potentially driving on gravel/ dirt road and into regional/ rural areas--a Rav4 will come in handy next--I might just get myself another used Rukus when my current Rukus reaches 300,000kms. Used Rukus price is very cheap now. The engine oil thing, to me, isn't a big deal. There has been worse issues with cars. But I'm not sure how it's been with other Rukuses, so it's good to hear from others too. Hope this helps. :)

I have a 2014 model, delux. Done 100,000ks. Not being an 'engine' person all I can tell you is that my car has regular services and in the five years it has required two sets of tyres, new windscreen wipers each year, a new battery (in 2018) and a headlight globe. Plus the recalls for the airbags and something (I could check the logbook) in 2017. Thats it. Never heard of an issue with the oil? The only thing I am sorry about my Rukus is that I won't be able to upgrade to a new model.

2015 model here with near 60000kms. No oil used between services or at service intervals. Run it on e10 fuel since new. 8.2 to 8.8 litre/100 kms. Mainly city driving. Got rid of the original tires at 20000kms as they were noisy and harsh ride and put on michelene tyres. Amazing difference to noise and ride quality

No idea Barry at the moment. There hasn't been talk or articles on it. Unless you know something I don't. If anything it could be possibly discontinued if sales don't pick up here in Australia and on the other hand it will keep the Rukus and its owners an exclusive contingent..Yeah..!!

dont be put off by the 4speed auto, toyota have done an excelent job matching it to the power and torque of the 2.4 and in such a light car. this box is old school smooth and works well. it also means it will be easer and cheaper to service. I was very suprised how good and responsive it is

Brad T.
Brad T.

By now, we can see that it's discontinued in Australia. Not a thing here, unlike Japan and US where they have clubs and modifications.
