Nice car but fundamentally flawed
Our company bought a VW Passat Highline 2 Litre TDi from the dealership in 2013. The car ran beautifully, it was a pleasure to drive and is very economical. There have been issues with the car relating to the wheel speed sensors and rattles which were relatively minor. However it had serious problems early on.
About 3 months after the warranty period and with 40,000 Klms on the clock (the car has always been serviced as recommended) I noticed that the coolant was dropping over a period of about a week.
When I took it to the dealership, they ...Read more

Good car to drive but had a few faults
The car was used for general family transport with a few long holiday trips, it was in daily use for 6 years but has since been sold early this year, it was serviced at the dealership according to the service book.
It had a number of issues, had to replace the thermostat at about 60000 k's because it would not warm up and the fan kept running. After this was fixed the engine block started leaking water (Fixed no charge although out of warranty)
Reversing camera failed as did the GPS system, quoted $7000.00 to fix this problem as it alegedly n...Read more

Solid performer
I've now owned my Passat 125 TDI sedan from new for just over six years. During that time I have had no major issue, exceot for the stop start system which was stalling the engine when releasing the brake. This was traced to the battery and was replaced. Unfortunately it was outside the warranty period. The performance is more than satisfactory, with plenty of torque and power and pulls like a locomotive. Handling is pretty good as are noise and comfort levels. The interior is typically German, designed for purpose and lacking some flair but er...Read more
gonomics are as one would expect with adequate room. A couple of disappointments are the lack of a lower position with the manually adjusted driver's seat. At it's lowest setting one's knees tend to touch the steering column. The other is the sun visors that don't go all the way to the windscreen when down which is annoying. The back seats seem somewhat too hard. The DSG had a couple of strange episodes in the beginning, like a box full of neutrals when in manual mode, but this has seemed to have sorted itself out and have had no issues since. Running costs are fantastic with diesel being cheaper than unleaded fuel and great range / economy. Whilst it lacks excitement, it's a great value for money performer. Always reliable and safe, gives the impression it could drive around Australia with no dramas. Very happy with my Passat. (Shame about the Dieselgate affair and VW's actions).Similar opinion? Great car
Car drives smoothly and with enough power. I got the 1.8TSI wagon. Fantastic for holidays.
Drive it everyday for work. Phone(s) connected and a panoramic sunroof.
The petrol bills are low as well. 750 km on a full tank of 58 litres.
Leather is great and overall a joy to drive.

Alltrack Passat, great vehicle to own and operate
The Alltrack Passat is very smooth, quiet to drive and handles surprisingly well through the hills, we bought one recently and really impressed with the economy even though it has the diesel gate software update. We bought it used with 55k kms for a good price. We average around 6.5 combined hwy and city driving, a bit more than the catalogue states at 5.9L combined, I suspect this is from the diesel gate mod. The car is loaded with features, Sat Nav, reverse parking cameras, heated seats, automatic tailgate just to name a few and has a really ...Read more
elegant interior design. We looked for a while first at SUV's then to wagons and this one was the winner by far, couldn't be happier. The only downside is the service costs are dear, I'm fortunate enough that I can do the servicing myself, but even still not as cheap as any average car because the VW spec oils are more expensive than the run of the mill stuff, I rate the car 5 stars for the price range, if you own one or are going to buy one preferably opt out from the diesel gate mod if you want that ever so slight amount more economy or power.Similar opinion? Love it!
I have been driving my Passat for a while now have not had a problem! Very good mileage out of full tank of petrol and an extremely smooth drive. The boot is huge for a sedan and would not need to move up into a bigger car once having children. Have had many people comment how luxurious the leather seats are and how much room they have when sitting in the back seat - even with 3 adults!! Although i have to admit my fave part is the seat warmers!!
Great car - no regrets whatsoever.

Great car so far.
I chose this car after testing a company car for a few months and being overall very impressed. I has been a nice, satisfying car to own with zero reliability issues in this first 50,000km.
Drive Experience: Easy to drive, great acceleration and handling, good comfort and visibility. Fuel economy is approx 7-8L/100km mostly city driving. Generally the best driving experience I've had in a road car of this class, aside perhaps from the Audi equivalent which is a cut above. The Alltrack has lower fuel economy from the 2x4 Passat but is defin...Read more
itely more grippy on wet roads, loose gravel and ice, so a must if that is part of what you will be driving on. My previous non-Alltrack had fuel economy that was at least 2L/100km better. Towing: I have done trailer towing with this car without issue, but no horse floats. I doubt it would be suitable for this kind of use long term. Parking: Rear camera and front/back sensors mean zero parking accidents so far. No complaints at all. Internals: Seat warmer is fantastic - I'll never buy a car without one in future! Seats are comfortable on long drives. Getting in and out of the car is not a problem, but many hands tend to dull the paint at the door handles over time. The layout of interior controls including steering wheel buttons is intuitive and easy. Integration with phone is the best I've experienced - a minimalistic, no fuss task of making calls and navigating music / radio without taking hands off steering wheel. All the necessary phone control information comes up on the centre panel next to the speedometer and is easy to read in a glance, without distracting from driving. I've rented many new sedans over the past few years and none have been as good in this regard.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

So economical and a pleasure to drive
So happy with the car. It's a pleasure to drive. I am getting 5.5/100 fuel economy which is awesome on my trips. Quality of build is first rate. Well appointed. Generous boot space. Really sleek lines which is a real head turner. Handles well and for a small diesel motor it has plenty of go. Just love driving this car!!

Excellent car, cheap price but lux experience
I got my 118 tsi passat 2 year ago!
Love the engine and DSG!!!
Powerful but fuel saving.
only 7.5-8.5 L per100 KM petrol!
One tank can run for 850-1000 km!
All leather seats and gps, camera, sensor all standard feature even for the lowest model (118tsi) in its range.
Really handy! I hate pay extra money for those feature which is standard overseas but cost 30% of the car cost only in AUS!!!

Got the 2012 sedan 1.8 petrol turbo with the 7 speed auto. Bought it one year old as ex VW executive vehicle but found out later previous owner was Europecar. Still a great car, about 900 kms from a tank and goes well. Does need oil between services but this is normal. Pay attention to transmission feeling though. Mine was shuddering a bit at low revs and it seems the clutch was engaging too quickly and would have been a 3 grand fix if not just inside warranty. It would be very easy to ignore the shuddering, so pay attention if it happens becau...Read more
se the fix is expensive. I also found the carpet does not wear well and at 3 yesrs old now there is a big hole where the driver heel rests between the accellerator and brake. Car mats are probably a good idea. Still love the car and have extended the warranty to keep it for another couple of years rather than update.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Absolutely Amazing Car!
Driving performance in this car is amazing! Handles well and the turbo really gives power to get out of the way. The TDI diesel engine does more then they state, I clock over 50 miles to the gallon highway miles in this car just on my way into work!!! The interior is plush and roomy and the radio is good, but could be better.. I would like to see VW pair up with Bose and install a better radio system. The radio is the one thing I wish was better. Ultimately, I would buy this car again in a heartbeat. You cannot beat the cost of milage in ...Read more

Passat Alltrack, a near perfect car
Have had mine for a year now. 2013 Alltrack (Wagon). DSG is the best gearbox I have ever had ( and after driving for 35 years, I have had many cars). The engine has lots of grunt and torque, it drives so smoothly, and yet firm enough for corners.
Space and quality are perfect.
I have a couple of negatives:
1- the AC switch is confusing and not easy to use. when it is off, its light is on, and vice versa, which is odd.
2- turn on the engine, put the geer in reverse, you expect to the rear view camera to immediately show the rear of the car,...Read more

Buying this was the best decision we made
We purchased the 1.8 litre petrol in June last year and haven't looked back. We needed a vehicle that could double as a work vehicle as well as transport two adults and two dogs around on the weekend. The dogs have different in-car styles, one preferring the back passenger seat and looking out the window, the other preferring to drop down on the floor and saying 'let me know when we get there'! - so he gets a bed in the back.
Vehicle selection wasn't easy as we considered wagons and mid-size SUVs from Volkswagen, Mazda, and Peugeot, and also c...Read more

Bought a 2012 Passat Wagon TDI with the following extras, Satnav, RVC, Electric tailgate and panaromic sunroof. Everything else in the car is standard, such Bluetooth phone connectivity, leather seats stop/start technology, hill hold, forward and reverse sensors etc.
In one word "fabulous". What a great car, lots of standard features, far too many to mention, but all very simply to use. For instance, the bluetooth phone system is fantastic. I use the car mainly for work and spend a lot of time driving, so I'm on the phone a lot. The pho...Read more
ne system is completely hands free. Everything is either accessible from the steering wheel or via voice recognition which actuallly works. And when you are speaking to people they can actually understand you when your driving. You don't sound like your talking from a fish bowl. Why cant every other manufacture make a system like this? The build quality of the car is excellent. The seats are comfortable, supportive and best of all heated. Handling and ride is good and road noise is minimal, even for a wagon with a sun roof. Best of all, is the economy, 950 km for 58 litres is no bad for city driving. Thats quite a change from my old petrol Territory, which used 70 litres for 490km, on similar trips. As for the diesel engine. I'm constantly suprised at the how quick and how quiet it is. Many people who have driven it, make the same comments and it quite easy to spin the wheels on acceleration. There is a brief turbo lag and away it goes. As a comparisson, I would guess its quicker than my previous Territory from the lights. SatNav. I've heard a few people complain about the SatNav, but I havent had a problem. Again it's simple to use, even with voice recognition and mine appears to hav ethe latest's maps. When compare to the previous Tom Tom I was using, It's a lot easier to use.3 comments
Update: After 25000km in around 22 weeks the car is still great. Averaging around 5.7litres/100km city, suburb and country driving.

res per 100ks I'm not sure why vw have 15000 km service intervals, being a vw engine it's designed to use a certain amount of oil, my old jetta used about 200mil every 1000kms. This isn't bad you just need to check it every so oftern and make sure the oil you use is vw approved. quality, quiet, nice balance of power and economy, the amount of interior space in the wagon, cheaper servicing than Subaru believe it or not. only use 98 fuel, and occasional top ups with expensive oil1 comment
Just thought I would update as it's been 2 1/2 years and 35000kms since I posted on the Passat. Wow what a car I still love it and not one issue.

I wanna buy a 2011 vw passat 2 litre turbo diesel. It has done 180000kms. I am concerned about any issues which may come with this high km. Is it still reliable or not?
2 answers
In all honesty it's done a few miles so expect some maintenance. I would say if service done every 15000kms by VW or VW specialist it should be ok. Get a VW mechanic to check it out. In the uk it's common to see 90-120,0000 miles on the Passat around this age and they look pretty good.
Just make sure you get a german car specialist to look at it first. Not a vw dealer. They will also check the ecg gear that tends to clog up, especially if auto. They change at such low revs that engine doesnt work hard enough to burn off carbon deposits. But regular services and it'll last 200k km.

When you buy a new car for about $45000.00 you don't expect to be quoted $7000.00 to fix the Satnav & reversing camera, 15% of the cost of the car for a Sat Nav that you could probably something similar at Autobarn for well under $1000.
