Hi,
I just sprayed the lawn using your instructions on the can of Baythroid. I find them confusing. I used a 5L garden sprayer and sprayed late in the afternoon. It's says to lightly water lawn before and after application. However in the paragraph above it says to water the lawn throurally after application (12mm of water approx). Can you clarify if I have completed this correctly or just wasted an hour of my time? It should be clear to follow.
Thanks

Hi Eggmund,

There are two methods that need to be made to apply this product. When treating the black beetles you need to ensure that you water the area with the equivalent of 12mm of water following application, regardless of the application method.

For the army worm a light water after treatment is only required if you apply the product using a pressure sprayer. If you have watered the lawn following the application of the Baythroid to 12mm of water, this is still sufficient to allow the product to be effective.

The differences with the application rate are due to the grubs/pests that you are treating. The additional water required for the lawn beetle application further flushes them out of the soil to get them to sit on the top of the lawn area. Once on the lawn, this exposure then allows the product to work its best.

We do appreciate your feedback and hope that the above information has cleared up the application of the product for you.

I don't know much about lawn grubs, I used Baythroid on the understanding it would kill mole crickets, which is my problem.
I watched a video about "Grub Guard", it claims to kill both the lawn grubs and the eggs.
Check it out.

For a 500 ml can, I paid $37.73, Bunnings stock #42050, dated 22-4-17.
At that price, it deserved a criticism.

Hi Steve,

Great question!

Older pesticides can vary in their approved applications from state to state due to different regulatory processes of the past, which applied when these products were first registered for particular applications in various Australian states and territories.

Registration of garden pesticides is now administered nationally by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA). For more information on pesticide approval, labelling and other regulatory processes, consider contacting them via the options listed here:

On-going serious problem with black ants around the home for some time.....Have sprayed may times with Moretein surface spray only to have them return a few days later travelling up steel posts & brickwork....Have experienced ants getting into plastic containers containing items such as electrical tools, instruments and also fasteners in hard plastic packets. Ant eggs have been found inside two instruments, plastic packets and inner workings of a spray gun. The instruments have been rendered unserviceable. .All items have been stored in a weatherproof shed in back yard away from the house.....Have observed on-going ant activity on lillypilly trees close-by and concrete around the house.. Have you any recommendation on a course of action which will effectively rectify this problem? I might add that I have also sprayed around the aforementioned trees.

Hello Warren,

Ants can be difficult to eradicate in the garden. Conventional surface sprays typically only control the contacted pests but not the nest itself. We suggest you track the ants to their nest and apply the prepared Baythroid solution directly into the nest for best results.

Liam’s,
Thanks for your question; a very important aspect of using any chemicals around the house. I have two small dogs that spend quite a bit of time on the lawn each day so it’s an issue that I check with any product that I use.
Baythroid must be watered in to be effective and the chemicals and lawn will be wet for some time. It makes sense to me to keep dogs off the wet grass and wait till it’s dry. In the meantime I would suggest that the pets only access untreated areas of lawn. This can be achieved by doing the front and back lawns on different days. Whilst this may prolong the spraying process, you will need to carry out multiple spraying to get rid of the grubs so doing separate areas on different days works for me.
As with the use of any chemicals, it’s better to be safe rather than sorry. Remember to always read the label and follow the safety directions. Best of luck with the process and happy gardening.

Hello Liana,

Thank you for your question.

We recommend keeping pets off any treated lawn/area until the spray application has completely dried, and keeping them from grazing on any treated lawn for a minimum of 7 days after application, plus 1 mow (removing the clippings). Also, please take a look at our handy guide to pet safety in the garden here: https://www.yates.com.au/safety-in-the-garden/pet-safety-in-the-garden/

How long can baythroid work? I have a tin that was a batch from feb 2006??!

There are many factors that can affect the efficiency of the chemicals in the product; most notably storage temperature. The product is likely to be effective to some degree and only by using it are you likely to find out just how effective. The spraying regime requires two follow up sprays so unless you have sufficient to do all sprays then the follow ups using fresh product should nail any remaining grubs. Due to our fine weather recently the lawn grubs have been fairly ferocious this summer so it may be useful to continue spraying until the end of March or even later this year. Keep up your good gardening practices.

Hello Ann,

While we would consider a 12 year old batch of this product to be quite old in terms of shelf life, storage conditions would be key.

Trying it out (according to label directions), in a situation with a known and visible target pest presence, would typically be the most straightforward way to get an indication of how effective it remains.

Happy gardening!
