Can you aquadeck directly over sikkens cetol product without sanding back?
2 answers
Hi Pauletta. Thanks for asking I’m not the right person to answer here - I’m not a surfaces expert. If the Sikkens is oil base then you might need to sand. I found the Cabots deck prep solution to work as it promised but I’ve only used cabots over cabots. Sorry not to be more helpful.

Hi Pauletta,
Thanks so much for your question. Unfortunately the Aquadeck is not suited to go over a Sikkens coating.
There is a coating system that is available in the Intergrain range, I recommend giving 1800 630 285 a call to discuss this further - as it is quite detailed.
Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Hi, Bit of a long story. Two years ago I purchased 10L of Aquadeck Kwila. Used it on my old veranda and I was satisfied with the results. The remainder was then stored in an outside shed. I noticed it got very hot in the shed during summer so I moved the paint to a cooler location after a few months. I also have a cabin with a new pine deck and decided to stain it during lock down. I used the balance of the old stain on the first coat. I would describe the colour of the stain in the Pail as dark chocolate. I bought a new 10L pail and found that the colour was what I would describe as translucent milk chocolate. I applied two more coats and find that the first coat is clearly visible and hence appears blotchy. I would like a fix to my problem. I don't consider your product is to blame, but I need help with a blotchy deck!

Hi Gavin,
Glad to hear that you're happy with the finish of the Aquadeck!
To help clean the timber to remove any stubborn dust/dirt - take a look at the Cabot's Deck Wash;
https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-deck-wash
This cleaner is diluted into water and scrubbed on to the surface of the timber. The Deck Wash is a non abrasive cleaner designed to go hand in hand with our coatings to keep them looking clean and fresh in between coats.
If you have any other questions, please give us a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

I sanded back the exterior cedar boards on both ends of our house. They original coating seemed similar to what I am repainting with but was in very poor condition with much of the coating just peeling of. I am repainting with Aquadeck jarrah water based. I have put four coats on as have had to spend a fair bit of cash for the scaffolding as we are on a steep slope and the apex of the roof would be some 8 metres up. I have since noticed small bubbles reappearing.and am not happy. Have I done something wrong with the preparation? Regards. Herb

I have been using aquadeck on my deck annually for several years but now i would like to use a decking oil instead. Can i put the decking oil directly over top of the old aquadeck (after using the deck clean). Will it soak into the wood or sit on top of the old aquadeck ??? I am desperate to avoid having to sand my deck again ... still have nightmares from the last time !!
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Jasmine,
Thanks so much for reaching out to us!
You can certainly move on and use an Oil based Decking Oil.
You will need to determine if the timber is ready for a new coating, by doing a simple water bead test.
Sprinkle droplets of water on to the surface of the timber.
If the water beads on top of the timber, the timber is not quite ready for a new coating. And further weathering is required - or this where you may want to consider sanding or stripping.
If the water readily penetrates the surface of the timber, this is an indication that the timber is ready for a new coating and you can certainly move on to using an oil based coating.
Be sure to give the timber a very good clean first using the Deck Clean to ensure the timber is best prepared for coating. If you do happen to have any areas of the existing coating that is in poor condition, again, you may want to consider sanding or stripping just so you get the best possible results when you do go to coat the timber.
If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Hello, I have a small deck (3mx3m) that I painted with Aquadeck 3 years ago, the deck is undercover so still looks good but the steps and some of the outer boards are starting to peel. I would like to give it another coat but what prep work do I need to do? I know I will have to sand the steps and outer boards to get rid of the peeling area but what about the rest of the deck that is still in good condition, can I just clean it and paint it?
Thanks for your time.

And its Merbau timber
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Gil!
Thanks for your question! You're right, you will need to sand those areas back to a sound surface and give all of the timber a really good clean with the Deck Clean.
The Deck Clean will not only best prepare the timber for coating, but it will also help in restoring the timbers natural colour.
For the timber that is undercover, you will just need to make sure that the timber is ready for a new coating by doing a simple water bead test.
Sprinkle droplets of water on to the surface of the timber. If the water beads - this is an indication that the timber is not quite ready for a new coating.
If the water droplets readily soak in to the surface of the timber, you will be fine to go ahead and re-coat the timber.

We have just finished using Timber Prep, then Deck Clean & 2 coats of Aquadeck Clear on our new Merbau Deck. It looks great. However, it’s scuffing quite easily & already has some marks on it that don’t come off... do we need to do a third coat? The deck is undercover & only gets some morning sun. We waited overnight before walking on it & the temperature was well above 10degrees when we did the job. Is. It normal to expect it to mark so easily?
2 answers
I didn’t walk on it with shoes for 2 days. A week before putting furniture on it.
It was slightly tacky whilst fully “curing”
I didn’t put very thick coats on the 2nd and 3rd time.
I haven’t seen any scuffing
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Ady,
Thanks for reaching out to us! While the coating is dry enough after a minimum of 8 hours to walk on, the coating still has not fully cured and is still soft.
It does take 7 days for the coating to fully cure - for this reason we recommend not replacing any furniture, as it can scuff, mark, indent and damage the coating.
A third coat may help fix up these areas, but wait at least 2 weeks before taking any measure. A clean with the Cabot's Deck Wash https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-deck-wash may help in removing these scuff marks.
This cleaner cannot be used on coatings that are less than 2 weeks old.
The Deck Wash is a non abrasive cleaner, designed to go hand in hand with our coatings keeping the coating looking fresh in between coats.
If this does not rectify the issue, you may want to consider applying a 3rd coat.

Can I use a paint roller to apply Roberts Aqua deck
2 answers
The application pad I used was from Bunnings and only $16.
I wouldn’t use a roller, the pad worked really well. I got 65 square meters done in a day with three coats.
No special tools. An old esky and a broom to wash.
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi there Wayne,
We do not recommend using a roller to apply the Aquadeck, the reason is that using a roller can introduce bubbles into the coating. If these bubbles dry on the surface of the timber, it can give you an uneven finish or compromise the durability of the coating.
I would recommend taking a look at using the Cabot's Decking Oil applicator, such as this one here;
https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-decking-oil-applicator
Or the Cabot's Deck Coat;
https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-deck-coat
These two tools will ensure a lovely finish on your timber.

So I did the unthinkable and actually used my accidental mix of oil and water based products! It didn’t take me long to realise but damage done. I’m usually so careful but was very distracted and brought the oil based without realising. Have already used it and now need to strip it back. Of course it is just clogging the grit on the sandpaper like gum or glue. Is there a chemical I can use? It’s over pine. Thanks.

Hi Even,
Oh dear! That is not good at all!
Intergrain do have a Timber Stripper you can try https://www.intergrain.com.au/product/intergrain-timber-stripper
You may have to use a combination of the Timber Stripper and sanding to be able to remove all of the coating.
If you have any issues removing the coating, please give us a call on 1800 011 006.

how soon after coating my deck is it safe for dogs to walk on it?
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Vandun,
The Aquadeck will be able to take normal foot traffic 8 hours after the final coat.
However, that being said I would recommend keeping the dogs off the timber for as long as possible.
While the coating is dry enough to be walked on, it is still soft and has not fully cured.
The full cure time of the Aquadeck is 7 days. If you can wait the 7 days, I would recommend doing so.

Hi we are laying 120 sqm of merbau decking, a third is around a pool no shade the other is under cover, i like the natural colour of the merbau and was thinking we would use aqua deck and not the oil as I didn't want the colour to change too much. What would you recommend we live rural Victoria so have hot summers.
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Gill,
Thanks for reaching out to us! All of our decking oils are lightly pigmented - the reason being is that is the pigment in the coatings that will offer longer lasting protection to the timber without the need of having to re-coat every few months.
That being said, the natural colour in the Aquadeck will highlight and enhance the natural colour of the timber without dramatically changing the colour of the timber.
Aquadeck is a highly durable, low odour water based decking oil that is designed to provide exceptional durability to all exterior timber surfaces and lasts long than traditional oils. Aquadeck’s advanced duel technology allows natural oils to penetrate and nourish the timber and creates a durable acrylic barrier for a beautiful natural finish.
We recommend 2 coats of the Aquadeck to the timber, however you can apply 3 coats for maximum protection.

Can Deck and Exterior Stain (Oil based) be used after using AquaDeck (Water based) and vice-versa.
2 answers
Aquadeck sits on top like paint. If you want to use oil based you will need to strip all the aquadeck back.
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Richard,
Thanks for your question. You can apply the Oil based Deck and Exterior Stain over the top of the Aquadeck.
However, you will need to make sure that the existing coating is weathered away enough for the stain to be able to penetrate the timber.
To determine this, do a simple water bead test. Sprinkle droplets of water onto the timber's surface; if the water readily soaks into the timber, you can then clean the timber with the Deck Clean and move on to using the Oil based Stain.
If the water beads on the surface of the timber, the timber isn't quite ready for a new coating and further weathering, sanding or the use of a Timber Stripper is required before moving on to using a stain.
You can also apply the Aquadeck over the top of the Oil based Stain - following the same directions as above.
However, the Aquadeck is a semi-transparent coating which is only lightly pigmented. It will not have the capability to dramatically change the colour of the timber, especially if the stain is looking tired, worn and potentially patchy in colour. It is always best to do a small adhesion test, to ensure the new coating will adhere well.

Can you remove spillage of Cabots Aquadeck from clothing? Is there a solvent?
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Petra,
Unfortunately we don't have a particular product we can recommend to remove our coatings from clothing.
The Aquadeck is a water based coating, so you could try soaking the clothing using a stain remover - following the manufacturers instructions. However, there is not guarantee the stains will come out.

Hi I got some aquadeck oil on my colourblond fence and a little on the brickwork. How can I take it off? Just soap and water?
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
G'day Dunnnic,
Warm soapy water, and a sponge that is not too abrasive that it will damage the surface will work just fine.
You may need to use a little elbow grease to get it off, but the Aquadeck will lift, as it would not have been able to penetrate the fence.

I had oiled my deck on Sunday afternoon and then Monday it rained roughly 8hours after. now looking at the deck there are spots that are real light and looks like the oil has washed off.
How do I fix this???
3 answers
If you dry the spots, the color should hopefully go back to the original.
Thank you Henry have dried most of the water off it.Now just hope it does return to normal.
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi there Tony,
Thanks for reaching out to us. The Natural Decking Oil requires a minimum of 6 hours for it to be able to have another coating, so rain after 8 hours should be fine. However, you may experience the coating retaining some tackiness for a few days, as moisture may have penetrated the timber in this time.
If you do experience this - the coating should dry itself out with no issues after 7 days, as this is how long it takes for the coating to fully cure.
If the coating does retain some tackiness after this time, or you would like to discuss this further - give us a call on 1800 011 006.

Sam S.asked
Hi,
Can aquadeck be used on Oztuff composite decking?
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
G'day Sam,
Thanks for your question. Composite decking can sometimes be very difficult to coat - as our timber coatings do need to penetrate the timber's surface in order for them to dry, adhere and perform properly.
I cannot give you a 100% answer to this question, but I do recommend to do a small test area to ensure the coating will adhere well. We do sell small 250ml sample pot sizes of the Aquadeck.
It may be best though to give the manufacturer a call, as they may have a specific coating system they have tested and recommend.

With new decking, how long to wait before coating with oil or stain
2 answers
Hardwoods 4-6 weeks, pine 2-3. Use oil based, not water based. Oil penetrates and preserves the wood, water based sits on top of the wood. The extra time to do it and turps wash up is worth it for the finish.
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi there Yvonne,
Just like Dave mentioned, it does depend on the timber type. But, 4-6 weeks will definitely be enough time to weather the timber. Just be mindful however that water does need to be a part of this weathering process, in order for the natural oils, tannin and any manufacturing resins leech from the timber. If the timber is undercover, or have little to no rain during this time, wet the timber down 2-3 times a week with the hose.
Another option, we have products in the Cabot's range that will bypass this weathering stage, meaning you can coat the timber sooner.
Clean the timber down first with the Cabot's New Timber Prep https://cabots.com.au/product/new-timber-prep
This is scrubbed onto the timber, and it will release the tannin and natural oils from the timber.
Once that process has been complete then clean the timber with the Cabot's Deck Clean https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-deck-clean - the use of the Deck Clean will best prepare your timber for coating and will also neutralise the chemicals from the New Timber Prep - this part is a very important step.
Once the timber is dry after the preparation process, you can then move on to coating the timber.
