Hi Mark,

Sounds like a big job! You can give the timber a clean by wiping down the surface with some methylated spirits.
Just ensure the timber is dry and free from any sanding dust before you coat the timber.

CFP Floor Water Based

I have got cypress pine timber floor,
Is cabot's cfp floor water based the right product for this timber?

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Guss,

Thanks for your question! The Water based CFP does sound like it would be the right product for you!
The Water based CFP does have a non-yellowing formula - so the coating will not yellow over time, unlike an Oil based flooring coating.

If your flooring is bare timber, take a look at the preparation instructions below;

Sand the surface smooth using 180 - 240 grit sandpaper.
Sand only in the direction of the grain. Remove all traces of sanding dust

If the timber has been coated before, take a look at these preparation instructions;

Thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean and allow to dry.
Apply one coat to a small test area. Allow to dry for 3 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating comes off, sand back further to a sound surface.
If the coating does not come off, you will be fine to coat!

If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

CFP Floor Water Based

Hi, I done the first coat last night in my bedrooms and hallway. How long do you recommend leaving it before I can walk on it to apply the second coat?

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Good Morning Rocky,

We recommend a minimum of 3 hours in between coats for the water based CFP, 12 hours if you're using the Oil based CFP.
For best results, lightly sand in between coats to remove any grain raise using 240 grit paper. Remove all sanding dust.
Apply the 2nd & 3rd coats as above.

As for being able to walk on the coating, if you're using the water based CFP, you can walk on the flooring with light traffic after 16 hours after the final coat. Resume normal traffic 72 hours after the final coat.

If you're using the Oil based CFP, light foot traffic a minimum of 24 hours after the final coat, and normal foot traffic a minimum of 72 hours after the final coat.

For both the Oil based and Water based CFP, the full cure time is 7 days. For this reason we recommend replacing any furniture after this timer to avoid indenting or damaging the coating during this curing process.

Hi Vicki,

As long as the surface is sound, there should be no issues in applying the CFP Water Based over the top of what you already have. Please see the below instructions on previously coated flooring;

Thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean and allow to dry.
Apply one coat to a small test area. Allow to dry for 3 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating comes off, sand back further to a sound surface.
If the coating does not come off, you will be fine to apply the coating following the instructions on the back of the can.

Can I add a Resene colour wood natural stain to CFP

1 answer

Leah P.Cabot's

G'day Jus,

Unfortunately we do not recommend mixing any sort of stain with the CFP, in both the water based and oil based.
If you'd like to change the colour of the flooring - we recommend staining the timber first using the Interior Stain and Varnish until you reach your desired colour depth.
Once dry, coat over the top using 3 coats of the CFP to ensure you have that durable walk on surface.

Sorry, I see this has already been answered.

Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Stivat,

No need to be sorry at all!
The cloudiness in the coating does indicate that moisture is present in the coating.
This will eventually go away as the coating fully cures - which can take a minimum of 7 days.
You can help speed up this process and remove the cloudiness by using a hairdryer on the lowest heat setting - making sure that you keep the hair dryer moving so you don't damage the coating. This will help any moisture evaporate out of the coating.
If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to give us a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Hi,
I have just finished 25 tables for my restaurant and found that most have a cloudy white finish in some areas which doesn't look good. How do I get rid of this cloudinesss?

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Mark,

This could possibly moisture trapped between the coating or the timber.
You could try using a hairdryer to try to draw out the moisture. It is important to have the hair dryer on a low heat setting and keep the hairdryer moving. As the coating gets warm, the white marks should start to disappear as the moisture evaporates.

Alternately and provided the surface is fully cured (Which does take 7 days), you could lightly wipe the area with a clean rag or cotton wool with methylated spirits. The methylated spirits may draw out the moisture from the coating. The cloth must only be damp, and you must wipe gently, otherwise you run the risk of damaging the coating.

However that being said, the cloudiness should subside by itself once the coating fully cures.

Can I tint my 4L tin of CFP floor water based?

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi DJ,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately the CFP cannot be tinted.
However to change the colour of the timber prior to coating you can stain the timber with the Water based Interior Stain and Varnish to the desired colour depth.
Once the stain is dry, you can then coat over the top with 3 coats of the water based CFP to create that durable walk on surface. If you choose to stain the timber first - make sure the timber is bare and un-coated so the stain is able to penetrate the timbers surface.

Hi, can I put a coat of oil based CFP floor on a floor coated with water based CFP to make it shine

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Candice,

Thanks for your question. If you would like to change to the Oil based CFP you will need to sand the flooring back with 180-240 grit sandpaper first to a dull surface.
We do recommend to do a small test area first to ensure the coating will adhere well.
Apply one coat to a small test area. Allow to dry for 12 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating does come off, you will either need to sand the timber back to a bare surface or continue on with the water based CFP.

Just keeping in mind that the Oil based CFP will slightly yellow, so will give your timber more of a honey tone.

Depending on weather conditions I would allow 24 hrs at least. You can put on the second coat after 2 to 3 hours however curing/hardening takes a fair bit longer

Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Dean,

While the water based CFP is dry enough to withstand normal foot traffic after 72 hours, the coating still hasn't achieved full hardness or cured yet. For that reason we recommend waiting at least 7 days after the final coat for the coating to cure before replacing any furniture.
If replaced before then, the furniture may indent or damage the coating.

CFP Floor Water Based

Can water base cfp be used on laminate floating floor boards, just trying to get a glossier look .

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Craig,

The water based CFP can be used, proving a small adhesion test is successful;
Thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-floor-clean and allow to dry.
Once the flooring is dry, apply one coat to a small test area and allow to dry for 3 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating does not come off, the adhesion test is successful.
If the adhesion test isn’t successful, we do not recommend the use of the CFP, however, we do have another product that may be suitable for your flooring called Laminate Floor Restore https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-laminate-floor-restore

Cabot’s Laminate Floor Restore is a maintenance coating for use on interior laminate floors. It is designed to rejuvenate and protect from daily wear and brings the shine back to worn laminate floors. Once applied, the flooring can be walked on after 4 hours.

Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Stuart,

CFP Floor Water Based makes refreshing your previously coated timber easier than ever as it eliminates the need to sand prior to coating. However, we do recommend taking the following steps to ensure that the CFP Floor Water Based will adhere well over your existing coating.

Thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-floor-clean and allow to dry.
Apply one coat to a small test area. Allow to dry for 3 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly.
If the coating does not come off – you will be able to go ahead and coat the flooring with the CFP Floor Water Based. But, if the coating does come off, you will need to sand back further to a sound surface.

If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST

is there a limit to how many coats one can use. I am thinking of 4 coats on a pine bench to ensure a good hard finish. Would this affect the curing time?

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi there Gerry,

The CFP is a 3 coat system, but there is no harm doing an extra coat.

It wont affect the curing time of the product as long as you're leaving a minimum of 3 hours in between coats.
Keeping in mind that the cooler weather is going to slow down the drying process of our coatings.

The shop assistant recommended cabathane clear with tint to help match, which is what I bought . Would you recommend doing it this way or using your water based stain and varnish ?

Hi Lennon,

Yes, you can put the CFP water based over the Cabothane - providing the Cabothane is also a water based product too. All you will need to do is give the coating a light sand before applying to help promote adhesion.

The Cabothane in the water based can be tinted and will work well. However you can also use a stain first before applying the clear coat. This is a good way to slowly build the colour to exactly how you want it to look.

Cheers!
