Hi I have a deck that’s been painted with a oil base it takes to long to dry . It needs painted again so is it ok to use a water base this time as it won’t take as long to dry.

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi Vee,

You certainly can move on to use a water based coating if you wish. Just follow the preparation steps below;

Clean with Cabot's Deck Clean following label instructions, then allow timber to fully dry.
Test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the timber. It the water beads on the surface, repeat the application of Cabot's Deck Clean - or allow the timber to be weather for a little longer.
If water is absorbed into timber, it is ready for coating. For a more transparent look, sand timber back to bare then clean with Cabot's Deck Clean before coating.

If you have any other questions, give us a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Half my deck is sun damaged and faded and the other is perfect,Ive always used your oil based merbouh stain but doesnt rectify the two different colour when finished,I used your water based exterior and deck stain on my Bali hut and noticed it had much more pigment, like paint. Can I use this to go over the oil based stain on my deck to give it a more uniform colour?

Cabot's ·

Hi Al,

Thanks for your question. You can most certainly move on to the water based Deck and Exterior Stain.
However, the existing coating does need to be weathered enough for the timber to accept the new coating, as a stain does need to penetrate the timber's surface.
To find out of your timber is ready for a new coat, sprinkle droplets of water over the surface of your timber - making sure you test all of the timber's areas, including the sun damaged area and the area where the stain seems to be in good condition.
If the water beads on the surface, you will need to let the timber weather for a little longer, as a new coating will not be able to penetrate the timber's surface.
If the water soaks readily into the timber's surface in under 15 seconds, you can then clean the timber with the Deck Clean and coat the timber once it has dried.

I have attached a link for you to have a read through from our website. It is some great information on how to coat uneven wear on your timber that you may find useful.

Can I use deck oil on pine log cabin walls..?
Cheers kate

Cabot's ·

Hi Kate,

Thanks for your question. You can use the Deck and Exterior Stain on your pine log cabin walls.
The Deck and Exterior Stain will change the colour of your timber while still maintaining the look of the timber's grain.
Before coating, you will need to do a simple water bead test to determine if the timber is ready to be coated.
You do this by sprinkling droplets of water onto the timber's surface. If the water readily soaks into the timber in under 15 seconds, you will be fine to clean with a timber cleaner and coat once the timber is dry.
If you see the water beading on the timer's surface - the timber is not ready for a coating, and will need to be continued to weather until water droplets will soak into the timber.

If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

My deck is pine,I plan to use Cabot`s exterior stain oil based . Would I get a better protection if I used an oil over the stain. If so what would give best result Thank you.

Hi Annette,

Thanks for your question.
Due to there being more pigment in the Deck and Exterior Stain - this will give you longer lasting protection as opposed to the Natural Decking Oil.

The Deck and Exterior Stain will change the colour of your timber - while still maintaining the look of the timber's grain.
You may find on Pine Timber - due to the Natural Decking Oil only being lightly pigmented, it may give your timber a orange/honey hue.

Which ever product you choose to use, we always recommend a small test area on an off-cut of timber, or a small hidden area to ensure you're happy with the colour result.

Cabot's ·

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your question. We recommend a minimum of 2 coats for the Oil Based Deck and Exterior Stain.
For best results, we recommend giving the timber a good clean with the Cabot's Deck Clean. This will ensure that any contaminants from within the timber are removed that may cause adhesion issues.
We suggest not using a roller when coating with a stain, but using a Lambs Wool applicator. Using a roller could potentially introduce bubbles in the coating which could leave you with an uneven finish, or could possibly effect the durability of the coating.

We used a water based on out deck about a year ago. It is looking very dry, can I use a decking oil over the stain?

Yes you can put oil based pain on a water based paint, but clean it with painters soup first. You cant put water based paint over an oil based pain. We had to put two coats of Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain Oil Based paint and retouch parts.

Cabot's

Hi Jacky,

Sounds like your timber is ready for another coat!
Give the timber a good clean with the Cabot's Deck Clean - this will help rejuvenate your timber and best prepare it for coating removing anything that could potentially cause adhesion issues.

Once the timber is dry, it is ready for a re-coat. You can certainly move on from the water based and use the Oil Based Deck and Exterior Stain.

Can I put a dark grey or charcoal deck stain over a recently redone walnut stain that is too red?
We were tossing up between a grey or brown deck stain & clearly chose the wrong colour. I understand some of the underlying ‘red’ will still show through

Hi, as long as the new paint is not water based it should work. But to get a solid colour you'll need to put at least two coats on if not three.

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi there,

It does depend on how many coats have been done with the original colour.
As the stain does need to penetrate the timber in order for it to dry properly. And if the timber already has 2-3 coats of stain – the new colour may have some trouble drying.

You can test to see if the timber can take another coat of stain by doing a water repellency test. Sprinkle droplets of water onto the timber’s surface – if the water soaks into the timber – you will be fine to coat.
If the water beads on the surface, it is not ready for a new coat and will either need to be sanded or leave for it to weather.

However, I would recommend getting a small sample pot of the colour you want to use, and test it out on a hidden area on the timber.
That way you are not only testing the colour – but testing to adhesion too.

Let the stain dry for 24 hours. Once dry, firmly place some tape on the newly coated area and quickly rip off. If some of the coating does come off, you have 2 options.
You can either sand the existing coating back – so the new coating will be accepted.
Or you can wait until the timber weathers and the water repellency diminishes.
You can tell when the timber is ready for a new coat when water soaks into the timber and does not bead.

Hopefully these few options can help you out, and get your timber to the colour you want it to be!

We are not sure what was used on the deck as previous owners did it. We are wanting to stain or paint it very dark. How can we tell if they used an oil or water based product?

I was informed that rubbing a small part of the timber with metho to see if it lifts the stain and if so it would then be water based. If it lifts with turps, it would be oil based

Hi, we’ve just used natural decking oil on our newly laid kwila deck- I’m not happy with the colour as it’s gone really red, I was hoping I could go over it in a Cedar Coloured Deck and Exterior (oil based) stain as I’m wanting a browner tone- and not so red. can I go over natural decking oil with an oil based stain?

Thank you for any help

I am just another unhappy customer. You are best to go into where you bought the product and ask the question there. My experience tells me that if you go over it with a coloured deck and exterior stain it will start to look like it is painted. We are very unhappy with our result and have ruined our new 130m2 pine deck.

Can I oil a deck that has been painted with cabots deck and exterior stain?

Claire Bear

The surface will need to be sanded lightly to remove the shiny coat otherwise the oil will just sit on top and never soak into the wood and stick to everything - your shoes, wash away, pets feet etc.

We have bought a house with a jarrah deck that has been stained with cabots new jarrah oil based stain (the tin was left in the shed). It has been a while between stains and I have had to do sone sanding back resulting in some areas with stain, and some raw wood. Ideally i would love to remove all the stain, but it is a bit too big of a job. Can I restain in say a native mahogany to reduce tge redness? Would a darker stain cover the new jarrah stain?

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi Kristy,
You certainly can re-stain the deck in a darker colour which will reduce the redness. There's just a few things to be aware of. Firstly as stain is semi-transparent, the colour of the original timber underneath will have an effect on the final finish. If it's patchy to start with, it will be patchy after staining. A darker stain will cover-up some of the uneven-ness, but it will still be visible. The other point is that as decking stain works by penetrating into the timber, so you should check that areas with stain on them are porous. Just sprinkle a few drops of water on the timber and if they absorb rather than bead, then it will be fine to apply more stain.
Hope this helps,
The Cabot's Team

Should I weather brand new merbau decking before I lacquer it pls?

Joots
Joots ·

The answer is no to both actually. Weathering timber can result in splintering & cracks. Lacquer will suffocate the timber, while still allowing it to dry out. Best to use a decking oil to retain the natural balance of the timber. The following article may be of interest to you.

Merbau has a high tannin content. This becomes a problem when the timber is exposed to moisture. The tannin will leech out, causing staining on the timber, as well as any surrounding surfaces such as concrete, painted surfaces and tiles etc. Tannin stain is not only unsightly, but can also clog the pore structure of the timber preventing oil from penetrating evenly, not only causing it to remain tacky but in some cases giving an overall dull and patchy appearance.

Wash all timber surfaces immediately after construction using an alkaline salt cleaner, rinse then leave 2-3 days to dry prior to oiling. Most hardware stores, including Bunnings have a good range of both cleaners & decking oil.

For ongoing maintenance, apply one coat of a good quality decking oil in Autumn & followed by a second coat in Spring. This will give the timber maximum protection throughout the Summer & keep your expensive investment in top condition.
