Oops made good...
Wanting a 'beachy' look, I chose Beach House Grey with Waterman tint to paint the front fence posts. Really liked the colour, though it had a bit more brown than I expected. Pleased with the result, I took a photo of the label & went to get another tin for the back deck. The girl at Bunnings paint dept noticed that the brown base had been used instead of the BH Grey, which explained the strong brown on the posts. So this time, I had the correct combination & I was shocked by the strong navy blue, but was expecting it to go on almost transpa...Read more
rent & look like weathered timber, like the in-store samples, which is what I was after. Wrong, it looked like thick blue paint, totally trashed the hardwood deck. Due to the cost of this product, I took the tin back to Bunnings & explained that I had wanted a weathered stain look, not a blue paint finish. The staff member looked up the difference between the original 'oops-brown' mix & the correct combination & altered the remainder of the tin back to the 'oops' colour. I sanded back the deck till most of the blue was gone & sparingly applied the 'adapted' stain by brush instead of the sheepskin mop. I found it works better to apply multiple light layers with a brush, than one heavy layer with the mop, to prevent the heavy plastic look. The final effect was great. Been on the deck next to a salt water pool for over 6 months, gets the occasional pressure clean & still looks good. So if your looking for a mid-strength brown with a slight grey/bluish hue, maybe consider testing a sample of the Brown base with Waterman tint. Tones in great with blacks & greys, while still giving a nice natural look.

Didn't turn out as expected
We were staining a pine sleeper retaining wall. After trying a sample pot in one colour and leaving it for a year while the timber settled in we didn't like the result. So today we went instead with Ironwood tint at Bunnings. The colour of this stain didn't turn out anything like the colour chart. It's more like mission brown paint than a stain. We used it immediately after it was mixed at Bunnings and also stirred it like the guy at bunnings said. Such a waste of money to purchase expensive samples that you don't like and then 4li tin for $90 that's no good.

Looks like paint not a stain
Just finished applying Cabots Exterior Stain to my recently constructed raised garden bed H4 treated pine retaining walls. Didn't read any product reviews prior and went with Cabots as had just used Aquadeck on the new deck which came up really good. I purchased 'Merbau' stain but a more appropriate title should be "Poo Brown Paint". Yes I stirred it thoroughly each and every time I used it, I followed the instructions to a tee, I was absolutely meticulous in the prep and the application. Left the sleepers two weeks to breathe and mature after ...Read more
construction prior to commencing application. First coat was okay, looked like stain and I was tempted to leave it as is, but put on the second coat as per standard practice and to ensure it lasted longer - it immediately looked like thick brown paint with no timber grain or features showing through - devastated. Even more so in reading these reviews which consistently say the same thing. Will it change and revert to a stained look after a bit of weathering? I hope so but unfortunately I'm not holding my breath... Really wish I'd taken my work colleague's tip and used Intergrain instead of Cabots, despite the extra cost, obviously you get what you pay for!1 comment

Do not use this product!
We have just painted our brand new pine shed with two coats of Golden Pine Waterbased stain. The first coat didn't look very even so we had to paint it twice but instead of a beautiful golden honey color we now have a bright orange shed that looks nothing like the Cabot's swatch sample we looked at in the store. Very disappointed! :(

Do NOT believe what they say on the can.
I have used 12 liters so far on a 36 square meter deck and still need to do one more coat as the color is all over the place. It on new pine deck with the ridges up. And yes I do know how to paint and have not slopped it on. Wish I could post a photo the you would see what I mean. Just hope that the color comes right after another $85 per can and I hope that the 4 liters will cover 36m this time. I wish I had read these reviews before my choice.

SHOCKING results. Do not use. This product ruined my new deck.
In a nutshell. This product looks nothing like the Cabots sample swatch you see in store. It looks like PAINT once you apply it. You wanted to see that nice woodgrain from your deck, Im sorry, thats now hidden under 2 layers of hideous caramel poo paint thats branded as 'European Beach'. Getting the picture? ting times, and applied in perfect temperature conditions. So far it sounds like Im the perfect customer. Bought all my Cabots branded products ready to tackle my newly build deck. A proud DIY moment. Lets read on shall we. Lets apply our first coat. Hmmmm, not looking too bad at all, I was worried I wouldn’t get across my whole deck before the stain ran out, so I made sure I was getting the most out of stain. Spreading it well. A definite improvement on the bare treated pine look ive been staring at for 8 weeks. Let it dry completely, and then returned the next day to apply the second (and recommended) coat. I start applying the second coat. All seems to be going well, im on my second tin now, so again, making sure I get a nice even coat and spreading it out well. I get about half way across the deck and I look back to the area I started in, its beginning to dry and well, its looking very paint like I think to myself. I tell myself to stop worrying and continue finishing the deck. There, all done. I stand back from inside the house and look at my newly stained deck. It was at this point that my concerns were starting to turn to panic. As this second coat was drying, I literally watched as my deck transformed, losing all signs of the timber grain underneath. It no longer looked stain like, it looked like PAINT. To be correct, caramel poo paint. What an earth has gone wrong im thinking.3 comments

Wish I read reviews prior to purchase
Wish I read these reviews prior to purchase and use. My painter went against his normal product as I wanting the ebony stain finish so I went ahead and purchased it, guess what colour it is... mission brown! There is a definite pattern forming here with this product. It gives a watered down blotchy paint finish not at all a stain finish. Any suggestions on the easiest and cheapest method of removing this ugly "stain" would be greatly appreciated. Cutting my losses and considering it a painful lesson learnt :-(

Stain running down my limestone wall in rain!!!!
We stained our back deck and bench seat a few weeks ago and had two sections run down the limestone wall after sprinklers. Today it has rained a lot and I have a very streaky limestone wall now. Shame I can't upload a photo to this review! We have been preparing it for a party this Saturday and now it looks worse than ever !!!!

What type of timber is your deck made of? Is it Merbau, Jarrah or a similarly dark timber species? It sounds like your timber is leaching tannins onto your lime stone walls. It is impossible for Deck & Exterior Stain to be running down walls once it is dried - water simply cannot re-liquefy it post curing. The good news is, tannin is water soluble, so you should be able to remove it using a soft bristle brush and some water. We wouldn’t recommend using any acid based solution on your lime stone. Could you let us know how you go? Is there any other issue with your Deck and Exterior Stain apart from the timber’s tannin bleeding? Please call us on 1800 011 006 if you have any further questions or feedback. Cabot’sSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Worst result in my 8 year house reno project. Do not use.
I used merbau stain on top of the line treated pine decking. I bought it for the look on the sample chart for result on treated pine. It came out seriously blotchy and uneven in colour, from light orangy to mission brown, no matter whether I used a brush, or the Cabot applicator pad. The only way to get an even finish was to coat it again, and now it is the darkest dull flat shade of chocolate mission brown. Does not even look like wood. I followed the directions, and conditions required, even bought Cabots Prep. Cabots help line and Bunnings will say they have had zero complaints. Ya, right. Lucky for them most people buy without googling reviews. $20000 deck ruined.

Cabots deck stain
Deck stain needs 2 to 3coats especially in a light colour. First coat and looks terrible...additional coats looking much better..also you must prepare your deck and don't stain in the heat of the day. If you can do a full board with the applicator (I got a better look with a paint brush) I would suggest you really try because you will see where you stop and start and be careful of drips.. A bit tricky to use. Try first on a piece of board ...otherwise a fantastic colour.

We recommend 2 - 3 coats for all our decking oils and stains. 2 coats for areas out of direct sunlight and 3 coats for areas in direct sunlight. Maintaining a wet edge is important to achieving a smooth finish on your deck. This is where your leave a 'buffer' of product at the end of your stroke, so that when you re-load your applicator and start a new stroke, there is no noticeable lap mark. First time stainer, very satisfied
I did a lot of homework and research before I settled on Cabbots exterior deck stain in Jarrah for my treated pine slat fence. The results are fantastic. I washed my new fence in cheap sugar soap with a sponge, washed it off with a hose, let it dry...In 32 degree weather, that didn't take long. The next day I started staining. Very happy with the product. Those people with the negative reviews should have used their stain on an offcut before starting on their project. I mean, some people just lack common sense!

Extremely disappointed (at this stage)
I will preface my review with time frame in mind, ie early days. After diligently following instructions, and using expensive Cabots cleaning agent, I placed one coat of stain on several areas of decking/screen fencing. I was very satisfied with the outcome. Then 24-72 hrs later (different areas) heavy rain fell and all areas have gone patchy. I will be shattered if it doesn't even out when it dries.

I would not recommend purchase
I purchased Cabots water based, Colour Control Formula, Deck & Exterior Stain. The deck was prepared and the application of product was as directed . The deck is still sticky, two weeks after the application and has the appearance of Wattyl Solar Guard. As we live in a temperate zone area, moisture and cold are not a problem. The surface is lifting where the decking furniture has been sitting, as the furniture sticks to the decking. There appears to be a serious problem with your product, I now have a serious problem with my decking. I would like to know what reparations are available to me, to rectify the damage to a very expensive piece of my home?

Deck and exterior stain, as pictured above. Throw it in the nearest quicksand and don't look back. This is cheap water-based paint, not stain. Unfortunately i can't even sand it off as floor nails are domed-head stainless steel and protrude. My new $10k deck floor is ruined!
I concur with all the points made above, took weeks to 'dry', sits on the surface and is not a wood stain. Absolute crap. Currently organising cabots to put it right ... 8 months later, still waiting. Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish.

Not all that happy
I bought this for my new fence over 2 years ago and it cost me $400 for two big tins. It is very thin, like water, and I sprayed it on the fence. It was only a short time before I noticed the top of the fence was peeling ( I wrongly assumed it was acidic bird droppings ) and the bare wood showing, which surprised me as I thought stain penetrated the wood and was fairly permanent. Not so!!! Over the next few months the stain faded in the sun and looked in parts like it had never been treated. It looked awful. On checking the net, I found that s...Read more

Nothing like the product states
We purchased Merbau waterbased stain and has gone on like thick mission brown paint. Looks absolutely terrible and we are so disappointed. Such a waste of money. The rep at Bunnings told us, unfortunately after we had done the decking, that he has complained to Cabots about their product many times because a lot of people have the same issue. We will never use this brand again.
Nothing.
Colour was incorrect, solid in appearance rather than a stain.

Hi Dean,
If left exposed to the weather, the Deck and Exterior Stain will eventually weather away.
However, you can scrub the area using warm soapy water with a stiff bristle broom and this should help lift it.

Applied first coat of water based stain to deck 18 hours ago and it is still sticky. Weather conditions are good - no rain. any ideas as to why it is still sticky?
Maree
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Maree,
Thanks for you question. While it is not normal for an exterior timber coating to remain tacky, this can happen.
This can happen for a number of reasons, however generally it will dry itself out within time.
Normally the weather does play a large factor for the coating to dry down and not retain tackiness.
While the coating conditions were good and there was no rain, experiencing high humidity can elongate these dry times due to the moisture content in the air.
Another reason could have been the timber itself still contained moisture - this will also elongate the dry times.
For both of these factors, the coating will dry out and the tackiness will go away when exposed to good weather. Which can generally take 7 days.
However, there are other reasons; for example the timber wasn't quite ready for a new coating and the stain is not able to penetrate the timber. Or, there could have been an existing coating that the new coating could not adhere to well.
If you think that the weather or high humidity has not contributed to the coating remaining tacky, please give us a call on 1800 001 006 so we can ask you a few further questions and try and find a solution for you.
Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.
