Polar chest is a knockoff that does not have the same level of thermal efficiency.

The Chill Chest works by maintaining its temperature by locking in the cold air if using cold items/ and likewise for hot.
Its made out of lightweight polypropylene .

Its like a small refrigerator with its door kept shut during a blackout, but for only a short period.
I'd say that it serves its purpose when its filled with cold supermarket, or party foods, (or only hot items, like freshly cooked pizza, or Fish n Chips) for a maximum of 25 - 30 minutes.
It only slows temperature change and is not suitable for drives of 100 - 150 km distance. For THAT task, I recommend a 12V powered Food Warmer / Cooler, and these can range from $90 - $400 depending on the capacity.

Any ice chest will operate better the fuller it is. If you only have a few items, surround them with ice packs or ice bricks and fill out the chest with crumpled up newspaper, or similar or sealed plastic bags full of styrofoam balls (as used in bean bags).

How does it keep things cold. Do you have to put it in the fridge first?

Hi Carol, The items have to already be cold to put in the Chill Chest and the same applies to hot items if you decide to store hot items in the chest. Not though at the same time. Hope that helps.

It doesn’t. Spend your money on a sealed and insulated cooler that has a proven track record.

How does it get cold have to refrigerate or freeze?

This chill chest is an absolute waste of money!!!
Does not keep things cold, just think of it as a styrofoam cooler that you can’t put ice in!!

Pierre
Pierre

Place icebags or ice bricks inside it. Placing pieces of ice in it does not work, as the ice melts!

Bellebee
Bellebee

Hi Sue, You dont need to do anything to get it cold its portable like an esky but lighter and fits compactly in the car boot .You can put both frozen and refrigerated items in the chilli chest. The insulated box chest is what helps keeps the temperature cool inside the box.

What do you have to do to let it get cold?

2 answers
Bellebee
Bellebee

Hi Misty, The Chilli Chest works by temperature lock technology which traps the cool air inside, so you just put your cold items in the chest and it will insulate food & drinks that are already cold for many hours. Perfect for days out.

Pierre
Pierre

Hi The items to be kept cool must be cooled before placing them in the Chill Chest, and kept cool using ice packs or ice bricks from your freezer. The chest itself works like an Esky, not a refrigerator. It's good for taking home frozen food from the supermarket and keeping drinks cold.

I was considering buying one for my daughter who was just accepted to Columbia University. Generally, students have small refrigerators in their dormitory rooms, but she will not have private transportation there as New Yorkers normally use the subway or taxis. Do you plug the Chill Chest in order to have it chill the items, or how does it get cold? If it is company proprietary information I understand if you cannot disclose certain information. I would just need to know if it would be appropriate for my daughter's minimal use.

Hi there, We actually sell this product in Australia so it might be best to look for a local supplier. But the Chill Chest is not electric, it just has technology in it which keeps things cool and hot. It is not a refrigerator. Thanks,

Pierre
Pierre

The Chill Chest is not a portable refrigerator. It is an insulated box which needs pre-frozen cooler bricks to keep things cool inside it. The insulation likewise keeps pre-heated contents hot (a bit like a hay box). Its main quality is its ability to internally maintain the temperature of whatever is placed inside for a period of time (a bit like a thermos flask), but does not of itself heat or cool the contents, since it is made of a form of foam plastic.

Kippi
Kippi

It's not plug in. It's just a very cheap material and it doesn't keep anything cold beyond an hour. My advice is not to waste your money.

Is it suppose to leak out the sides? We just bought it and filled it up with ice, bottled water and what the Wisconsin heat over Memorial Day weekend it didn't take long for the ice to melt and it to leak out the sides of it. I don't know if anyone else is having the same problem with the product or what. You spend the 40.00 an it's defective is not a good thing.

It’s not designed to have loose ice in it, as it is not leakproof. It’s only designed to keep foods, drinks cold or frozen. I put ice packs and fill the spaces with a towel and the foods stay really cold for hours. Great product which I use often.

Concealed hinges, Don't even think about taking apart. Either buy one and don't mess with it or find someone that has got one so you can see it works.

Truben

Hi, no they aren't hinged, the short sides have an interlocking piece that locks in with the long sides when the chest is folded out. The just unclip for lack of a better word when folded down for storage. I hope this answers your question.
