Terrible card!!
Where do I start! The exchange rate was terrible, at least 4 cents less than other cards. There were several instances where I tried to transfer money on the card only to be given an error message saying that the travel card didn't exist. And finally on check out I tried to pay the bill using my travel card which had sufficient funds and it was declined. I spent almost an hour at reception trying to pay in $500 increments, half of which were declined. I tried to phone the number provided on my travel card info, which unfortunately was a general Commbank number and not a travel card hotline. Will not use it ever again!!!

Horrible exchange rate.
Horrible exchange rate. Not competitive at all. While easy to use, and beneficial if going multiple countries, there are better options out there. Ie. I got an exchange rate of 71 yen when it was trading at 75.

Horrible dispute mechanism
While it is convenient to be able to pay without fees the exchange rate is horrible.
We used it in Switzerland, Euro counties and the Czech Republic. Loaded before going with $A and Euros.
We had 2 transactions turned down that are currently still “pending”. This was 26 and 24 days ago. Have had numerous emails and 4 telephone conversations and still not resolved. The service desk was answered on all but one occasion by operators who had heavy accents and were extremely difficult to understand as I assume I was to them.
Emails were answered 3-4 days later with a pleasant but irrelevant message instructing me to call them once again.
No ability to call using WiFi call made this difficult whilst overseas.

Simple and effective
Strange to see so many poor reviews for this card - I have found it to be excellent through South America, Bali, Asia etc. I haven't had a single issue with it. Transferring funds is immediate on the app, and its nice and safe. Loading up with another currency, and withdrawing in that currency is a good idea to avoid extra fees.
I was only charged $3.50 for (ATM) cash withdrawals - pretty reasonable I thought. Beyond this card, its always good to have an international credit card (like 28 degrees) which can be used as back up.
you don't pay any transaction fee if you withdraw in the currency loaded on the card. I.e Load up with Euro, and withdraw in Euro and you will only pay with withdrawal fee.

No Problems at All
Having not travelled for 20 years I was not sure what the best option for money in Europe.
I finally decided on the CBA Money Card, glad I did as I had no issues at all.

CHILE (Card won’t work)
In Chile, I was not able to use it to pay anything. The card will only work with just one ATM (Bank of Chile) which is difficult to find one

Virtually useless to a couple!
Went to a branch who said it was possible for my wife and I to get cards and link them. We have a joint account, joint home loan and joint credit card but in fact we cannot get a joint travel money card or even two seperate ones that are linked. Now I have to either give my wife cash or be with her 24/7 as the pin option on the card doesn't work 99% of the time and requires a signature! All in all pretty much useless to us!

Dont waste your time. Its easy to open a bank account once you land. Then, transfer money using TransferWise. That the best app with cheapest rates and no hidden fees Ive found.

Misleading and deceptive
I was going on my first trip overseas to Phuket and was concerned about a safe and convenient way to access foreign cash, since I banked with the CBA I looked into their Travel Money Card product and was sucked in by the so-called "features & benefits". Once you travel and see what other seasoned travelers do with their cash you realise those "features & benefits" aren't really all that beneficial and are just hyped up to sell the product. Ultimately the bank benefits a whole lot more from you using the card than you do. After returning from Ph...Read more
uket I went through the receipts and found that the exchange rate I was getting from CBA was consistently at least 10% worse than what I could have gotten by exchanging AUD cash at the foreign exchange booths in Phuket (which is what the seasoned travelers were doing). So on this Phuket holiday I had budgeted $3000 AUD spending money loaded onto the card, I lost $300 just from CBA's rip off exchange rate alone and that's before factoring in their other fees. I cancelled the card not long after returning home once I came to the realisation this card was mostly just a gimmick and money maker for the bank with very little benefit to the customer. There are much better travel card products out there and none of them are from the Australian big 4, there's a reason why they were the subject of a royal commission.Similar opinion? Useless
Couldn't even use it at a large department store and for petrol. Just kept getting declined. Useless in America. Ended up having to withdraw cash and got charged almost USD$10 in fees at the ATM. Not for emergencies... it will likely get declined.

Not worth it if you are travelling to Vietnam or Cambodia !
Over a 2-week holiday covering Vietnam and Cambodia we paid about a total 23 USD (about 35 AUD) of bank fees for 4 withdrawals @ ATMs. Expect to pay about 50,000 dong per cash withdrawal in Vietnam in addition to the excess fees the local bank will be charging (depends on your transaction). In Cambodia cash withdrawal fees were about USD 2.50 and the local bank will keep another USD 5.00. In Vietnam, when the card was used in stores an additional 3% tax (VAT) was charged. It felt like daylight robbery. The only positive about the card was the relative ease in which you could use the CBA App to load money in different currencies with a WIFI connection.
Next time I travel to these countries I will be taking cash and exchanging there.

Unreliable
I travelled to Chile. I needed to pay the hotel but it didn't work. I tried then in restaurants, shops, supermarkets, all at different cities, but nothing.
I called customer service and the only solution was to issue new cards which would arrive by the time I was back from my trip.
I strongly recommend not to rely on this card, choose a different one or take cash.

Cancelled travel card rip off
My travel card expired and the money which was left on the card went to unclaimed money. I don't understand why the bank would not have tried to transfer it to the account it was linked to or contact me to advise me. Shows they don't care about their customers. Unable to access how much was in the account. Called customer service who had a don't care attitude and advised I need to go into a bank to make a claim through unclaimed moneys. Difficult when working full time but went to my local branch to lodge a claim. No idea why the bank has to make this so difficult but they have lost me as a customer. I will find another bank who does not do this and cares about their customer.

NO GOOD- ABSOLUTE RIPP-OFF
I purchased the Combank Travel Money card before I travelled to Europe. I purchased Euros at an extremely low rate of exchange to load on the card. Once in Europe I went to use the card and numerous times I used the card in restaurants & hotels etc. the card charged me in AUS$ and converted it back into euros than back into AUD$ this made a loss after several transactions of over $2000- baring in mind I already had many 1000’s of Euros already loaded on the card. I contacted commonwealth bank at great cost in telephone calls from Europe regardi...Read more
ng the technical error built into the cards use overseas and was met by ignorant and non listening commonwealth Bank employees whom would not admit to the cards technical error. The cards use defaults to charging in AUD$ even when you have loaded a foreign currency on the card and there is much foreign currency still available on the card. My advise is DO NOT TRUST THIS Commonwealth BANK TRAVEL MONEY CARD. The COMMONWEALTH BANK rip you off twice on extremely low exchange rates for a technical error within the cards system at no fault of the customer/ users. Commonwealth Bank reply and state it is not there fault! Con artists & theives is a nice description of dealing with this evil money making theiving Bank. DO NOT TRUST! July 4th 2022 Update: Bad Product- Stay Away I exchanged AUD to EUROS on this Travel Money Card before leaving Australia for a trip to Europe. However have found out that 1 in 3 transactions in Europe using the card to pay bills in Euros are billed in AUD then converted back into Euros all at my the users expense and ALL transactions I have authorised to be in Euros. After contacting the C.B.A. regarding this error. They basically advise me complete lies that I had the choice to use AUD or EUROS and have chosen AUD. This is obviously not true and correct, as WHY would any sane person use AUD$ in a country that uses Euros to pay for a bill. This card is only good for making money for the Directors of C.B.A. and using your hard earned money to fund these already overpaid criminals! STAY AWAY from this card!Similar opinion? Lost $750 before I even went overseas, given misleading information about this card
I transferred $8200 to Euros from AUD and received $5000 which seemed about right. It wasn't until I decided i wanted my money back in AUD that I lost just over $750 in fees and conversion rates. Essentially if you don't spend all your money overseas, you loose it! Massive rip off and was told I could convert easily and conveniently back to AUD, no mention of the massive fees associated with this type of transaction. Lucky I didn't discover this overseas, will be cancelling the card immediately after trying to recoup my money.

Inflexible and high fees
Have USD loaded on the card. About to travel overseas and wanted to withdraw USD to have some cash on hand. Went to George and Market St Sydney foreign currency deal in branch to be told you can’t withdraw USD in Australia. Card can only be used overseas to withdraw cash. Useless.
Have also travelled with it to a few countries now to be slugged fees higher than stated on its website!! Time to look for a better card!!

No confidence in combank
Was charged 11 1/2 months later for an overseas transaction, but my concern is how do you know it hasn’t already been deducted from your money card? ! Filed a dispute with combank but did not hear anything from them. Very poor customer service!

Noelia P.asked
Hi, the card was used to withdraw $100 USD from an ATM in Walmart in Kentucky USA. Was charge $2.50USD by the Commonwealth, but then charged an additional $18.36 USD. So a $100USD withdrawl cost $20.86USD, About $30 AUS. Is this right? How do we avoid this.
1 answer
It was probably a private ATM. Always use recognized banks. I would suggest only withdrawing when you need cash and don’t do this often. Use the cash card to pay for as many of your transactions as possible as there is no fee for payments.
