I'd zero if I could
This printer has been the worst printer I even had to deal with. Connecting this thing on a chromebook has been a nightmare it has hardly been better with my mac or PC.
If it wasn't for my wife, I would have trashed it. I will NEVER buy an Epson printer again. Don't buy it.
Epsom is extortion regarding inks
Epsom is extortion regarding inks do not buy this company's products, they update regularly to insure you cannot find cheaper alternatives. Monopolistic practices are actually against the law in most states. Do not patronise companies that practice extortion.
Show detailsGood print quality but endless issues to connect on Windows 7 and Chrome Book
My wife and I had many issues connect this printer/scanner on both our machines. I now have to scan to a USB disk as I can't connect it on my network and I can't even get it to work using a USB! I followed the instructions closely and so did she but for some reason it doesn't seem to like Chrome Books or Windows 7.
As far as I'm concerned it sound be a plug and play like all my other devices.
I will not buy another Epson again and cannot recommend this product unless you want to fiddle around endlessly.

a waste of money bad performance
I now have had 3 different ink jet printers from Epson and this xp640 is the final straw
whilst we all know they do head cleaning to waste our ink, thats acceptable in small amount
this wonderfull printer when in a loop after I replaced the 5 inks and when it finished all the inks were down to the last button off the cartridge, not only did i waste my money on inks but lost a job due to this was on a Saturday afternoon and i could not get any more till Monday too fn late

Very Good But Ink Cloggs Up
I bought this printer from Harvey Norman about a month ago and it is still under manufacturer warranty, I never purchased any extended warranty or additional ink cartridges in house from the friendly sales team as I think it is not necessary. Okay, once set up though, it was fine for both color or B&W. I bought it because it prints directly onto CD/DVD, although I haven't tried it yet because the ink has clogged up in the first week with minimal use. I've printed mainly B&W and some color. I read elsewhere from other consumers online that you h
... Read moreave to print a color page a day so it doesn't clog up; I was none the wiser. I watched a couple of YouTube videos on how to clean the print heads with cleaning fluid and blotting paper, which can be purchased online. The ink cartridges are showing 3/4 full so they don't need replacing. It's just a design flaw which I'd actually heard about in the past. So, at this stage, for me, I don't think the printer is worth 5 stars to be honest. I will service it myself, but for others who are not that way inclined, I think this would be a headache for them, especially if they don't have the time. And Epson have not improved the functionality of their printers concerning this product flaw. So, I'm purchasing a laser printer for B&W only (toner) to do my other jobs. However, when working the print quality is good. The refill prices are around $33 each, online eBay bundles are around $49, much cheaper. The printer hasn't jammed and it's quite smart, it advises you to open the feeder drawer if you forget. The WIFI connected but I couldn't get it to print from my cell, not sure why, gave up on that. The printer disconnects itself a lot, I have to keep taking the printer cable out and plugging it back in again; the cable itself works fine. Ergonomics are good; the printer packs up nice and neat, compact when you close the drawers and front panel door. There was a $30 cashback promotion offered via the manufacturer which I applied for online. All in all, the printer is okay but it's let down by at least one design flaw, Epson ink cartridges are not affordable when you are overusing ink color to keep the machine going. This problem has persisted for some time if I am correct by consumer online reviews elsewhere. My solution: I"m not playing warranty and wasting time; rather I'm keeping the printer for the CD/DVD function; so hope that turns out well. I'll probably be buying a different laser printer brand for other print jobs. Regards.Update: btw I never received the $30 cash back offer. It's no sweat for HN cause it's a manufacturer's promise. I didn't even bother. I bought some cleaner on ebay and did it myself. The printer is st

Considering the price and getting on with it, not worth the time and annoying manufacture/retail whatever. Due for new cartridges soon and have noticed on eBay some people have been having troubles with their purchases.Great photo printer
I bought this mainly to print out photos. It works beautifully, was easy to set up and the prints look great with realistic colours. They look as good as prints from a photo lab to me.
It prints quickly and the ink dries immediately, so no smudging. I used photo paper I had on hand (from a different manufacturer) with no problems. I am still using the inks that came with it, so I am not sure what the ink replacement frequency is like. It has the 5 separate cartridges, so I only need to replace the colours that run out.
I haven't us
... Read moreed the "print directly from smartphone" functionality, but I don't need it, as I quickly enhance photos a little on my computer first using image editing software. Then I print via wi-fi. I was originally after a tiny dedicated 6x4" photo printer, but they are really hard to find these days, especially Epson ones. Undoubtedly this one is bigger than something like a picturemate printer, but on the plus side, I can print larger prints if I ever need to, up to 8x10". As far as multi-function printers go, it's compact, and the other print/copy/scan functions are there if the need arises. I'm glad I bought this - we are now enjoying photos that were just sitting unseen on the computer.Questions & Answers
Is the Epson XP-640 printer still available to purchase?
sorry no
Purchase the "Expression Premium XP-6100" which appears to be the same, including price tag $179; e.g. it can print labels for CD's and DVD's. Make sure you purchase Epson ink cartridges when you run out of ink or the machine will probably stop working when you update software. Also buy a cleaning pack, as when it gets dirty heads it will stop working, easy to do. Mine drops connection often, a bit annoying, rebooting Wifi/USB connection, just glad to get the job done.
