Impossible to roll over out of First State Super, not accepting email and requesting post the docume
I had absolutely horrible and the same experience with other recent reviewers. I was trying to roll over my super fund out of First Super since 2 month ago, but still not able to do so due to my legal name is still not updated with First State Super yet.
At first, I was told to email all my scanned and certified ID + Request Form for name change which I did. But then that was it, no feedback or follow up, only auto response email saying they have received it.
Then, I called them to chase up the process. I was told all ID documents need to b...Read more

Lack of Customer Service Very frustrating company!
They had my other beneficiary name incorrectly spelt on my profile. When I inquired about it the lady whom I spoke with she insisted that's how i wrote it on my form. I told her I have checked that and that beneficiary is my daughter how in the world I will spell her name incorrectly because I named her. So she asked me to mail another form which i did immediately and mailed to them it has been 4 mos now since I mailed my form to them but they haven't updated it!!!! What a shame!!! its only a name change which can be done as easy as 123 but they are so incompetent about it so how we gonna trust them of our hard earned super if that single thing they cannot do it properly!

Transfer/roll over out of First State
Difficult to transfer funds out of first state super.
Been an ongoing issue for the last 6 months as there is always some glitch..
Has costed me so far around about $4000 from fees that first state is charging from still having an account with them.
Don't bother sending a response to this first state super offering to help.... This review is in response to your lack of assistance via the various phone and email correspondences ..

Very difficult to leave
I am in the process of combining all of my super accounts into a single account. I have had 4 different super providers from different jobs over my working life. All of the other providers it was incredibly easy to transfer into my new account, no fees and done instantly.
First State charge $36 and also force you to provide 100 points of certified identification - Eg copy of passport etc signed by a JP.
I think its terrible service. I didn't need to provide this certified identification to open the account and they are also going to charge me to transfer my own money, despite all of the fees they have already taken. Other Super Annuation companies make it so easy to transfer, I feel like First State intentionally make it hard.

Trying to balance out the whingers
Very surprised by the low comments here.
With respect to those who claim that they aren't prompt, I disagree factually, but also note that to some extent that is what we want. If my super fund is paying for spare capacity staff to answer phone calls on the first ring, they don't have the right approach to super.
If you want a low cost, high performing fund, this is great. On the odd occasion you need to call, you may have to wait until the second or third ring before someone picks up.

I did a short contract job at a hospital and they automatically contributed super to this fund. I contacted them a few months later to remove the money. 950 had been contributed by the employer and the balance after 2 months was less than 650. They had quite a few "Fees" and fell back to memorized phrases like "price fluctuations in the market". I will never use this super fund again and will be very careful whenever doing payg short term contracts in the future.

Not very transparent
For an industry fund that is FOR THE PEOPLE, there is very little transparency on my account activities. There is no way that I can see an activity statement which shows when and how much contributions are received, what fees I'm paying, how much in taxes etc. All it shows is my balance which isn't all that useful. It also doesn't show who my nominated beneficiary is after I had sent in the signed forms. When I compare to my husbands super (another industry super), everything about them seems so much better. I've been disappointed with their service for over a year now, moving my super to them!

sets. Then they tried to get me to agree to pay an exorbitant fee for their advice $2,640!!! I declined and was immediately shown the door. A complete waste of time. He also got me to email my pay slip to his computer. At the end of the meeting I asked if he had finished with it? I had to ring head office to ask them to tell him to delete it for privacy reasons. Terrible Superannuation Company
When we first inquired about withdrawing our super fund, we were told that it would take one week. We submitted our forms and nothing happened after over a week.
We rang them and were told that it takes 10 working days after they received our forms for us to receive the money.
After more than 10 working days still nothing. So we rang them and they told us that they can't tell us when we will receive the money and to call them back in few days.
We told them that this was not acceptable and we wanted them to ring us back within 24 hours. They ...Read more

These days having online access to your super account to monitor the balance and to make changes to your investment strategy, etc. is a pretty basic requirement for any Super fund, wouldn't you agree? And yet I once again find myself unable to so much as view my balance due to "access restrictions" that have been placed "on some customer's accounts" due to "data integrity problems." I have no idea what this means but when I call First State Super and ask them to give me an ETA for when this will be fixed I am told they can't give me a timefram...Read more
e at all. When I submit a formal complaint online they reply with a generic email saying it may take up to 3 months to investigate my complaint. I asked the telephone customer service rep if they could at least find out if it would likely to be days, weeks or months before I can access my balance and investment switch facility through my online account again and they contacted the relevant department which couldn't even answer that question (although they said it "probably won't be months" and will "probably be lifted when all the member statement summaries have finished printing.") I feel this is an unacceptable level of service for me so I am voting with my feet. Today I opened an account with a different super fund and asked my employer to direct future super contributions to that fund instead of to First State Super (which is my employer's default fund.) I told the First State Super customer service rep what I am intending to do and they said I have to keep my account open with at least $1500 in it because I have a special insurance policy through my employer and First State Super, and that I have to keep a minimum of $1500 in the account to keep it open. This is only a very small fraction of my balance of course and is neither here nor there to me. The rep was sweetly spoken enough and didn't seem too concerned about me following through with transferring the rest of my six figure balance to another fund. She offered to email me a form to apply to transfer my balance out to another fund although she had earlier refused to send me an email regarding my initial query on the grounds that "we are not an outbound call centre and we can't send emails." This made me feel like I was being fobbed off initially and either I am too much trouble to bother with for a relatively small fish or that the rep didn't really believe I would follow through with leaving the fund. Despite the marketing slogan to the contrary due to the poor state of affairs outlined above I feel that First State Super does not really care about me as a customer. If they genuinely cared about the ongoing inconvenience of not having access to my account balance or investment switch they would respond to my request for an ETA for when my online account will work properly again and would be trying to resolve this issue ASAP rather than saying "we have no idea how long it is likely to take before you can even check your balance online again." First State Super had similar issues with my account last year that dragged on for months and I ended up staying with them despite threatening to leave. No more. I finally felt I had to follow through on my threat to leave. After all, if it is this hard to simply get online access back to my balance or even to get the requested info on a very rough timeframe on when I may be able to get online access to my balance again... then imagine the difficulties I might have if I actually wanted to withdraw any of my money when I retire for example? I am leaving because I want the people managing my retirement savings to take my concerns seriously and to treat me as a valuable customer and not as just a number or as a "captive customer" because of the hassle of switching and having to keep the account open for the insurance.1 comment

Is TAL the insurer for First State Super (as claimed by FSS) or are they just contracted to make recommendations to FSS’s Board of Trustees for life insurance claims, including terminal illness and total permanent disability (as claimed by TAL)??? Just want to know the legal/contractual relationship between TAL, FSS and myself.

Hi Brett
Thanks for your message.
First State Super’s death, total and permanent disablement and income protection insurance is offered to First State Super members under insurance policies issued to the trustee by TAL Life Limited ABN 70 050 109 450, AFSL 237848 (the insurer).
The insurance cover provided is subject to the terms and conditions contained in the insurance policies (policies) issued to the trustee by the insurer.
The insurance information provided in the Member Booklet and Member Booklet Supplement available on our website is based on the policies issued by the insurer, and information provided by the insurer about the operation of the policies.
The terms and conditions of the policies prevail over any inconsistent information in the Member Booklet (Product Disclosure Statement) and our Member Booklet Supplement.
Insurance benefits will only become payable if the insurer accepts the relevant claim. Payment of any approved claim will be made by the insurer to the trustee and any insured benefit and any account balance can only be paid to a member by the trustee when a condition of release under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993 (Cth) is met.
If you would like to discuss your insurance cover with us, feel free to call our service centre on 1300 650 873.
Kind Regards,
Beau
Ok. Your “insurer” denies being the “insurer” for terminal illness benefit. Instead they claimed to be there to make a “recommendation” which the trustees would then accept or reject. I may even have it in an email, but was definitely told this on the phone.
