Red Flag! Are they Solvent?
You have to wonder about the financial probity of First State Super when they systematically hide behind call center tactics to confuse what should be a routine process to cash out a lump sum retirement "ENTITLEMENT". We provided correctly formatted (and verified) documentation back in early February. We subsequently received a statement summary to show a zero balance owing, however our bank account statement did not reveal a corresponding Credit to our account.
Our followup query to their 1300 number elicited the standard "your call is bei...Read more
ng escalated" response. We were told to expect a processed payment within 5-10 working days. Fast forward 10 days and nothing had changed. Another call to the call center, and we were spun a different story, with the operator finding no evidence of our earlier follow up call. We were then told they were at fault for having processed the payment to an incorrect Bank Account number (a prerequisite part of the exit documentation requires a copy of our bank account statement). We were again informed that our matter would be referred to the administration team for prompt action, with payment guaranteed "no later than Friday or the following Monday" That milestone passed, requiring yet another call to the 1300 number. The standard call center rhetoric cut in with a bland "you should receive payment in 5-10 working days." I have noticed that FSS have a very active PR department who attempt to diffuse complaints with PR spin. If only their admin team could respond with the same punctuality. (Kat. Don't bother posting a response unless you have a factual resolution .) Maybe APRA/ the Superannuation Ombudsman and a Current Affair can get mileage out of what is appearing on this web site. Their is a pattern which demonstrates serial indifference by FSS to its clients. If you are an existing superannuation contributor to FSS, please be aware eventually you will be faced with the same bitter experience. Look around now for another provider. The only way an organisation like FSS is bought to account is if you switch funds, and/or complain to the regulators. APRA and the Superannuation Ombudsman are meant to be there to protect hard working people from unethical corporate behaviour. Here's hoping FSS contributors are'nt in the same boat as former Pyramid Building Society victims!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Still Waiting
I sent my forms in nearly a month ago for withdrawal of my fund balance. I have now rung 3 times each time being told that my forms are on file but due to a computer problem my funds could not be released. Apparently a switch over to another computer system has caused problems calculating the taxable component of my fund. Their problem, not mine. How about paying me my money and worrying about fixing the problem later. By the way there is no tax payable on my super as I am over 60 and retired and withdrawing the full balance.

Continued problems with First State Super
In summary, First State Super took 57 days to process an “application for benefit payment or transfer”. These funds were required to contribute towards my mother’s nursing care costs.
As a result of First State Super not processing the benefit payment, even though all requested paperwork had been provided to them, my mother incurred interest charges on unpaid fees from her nursing home provider. My mother has not been compensated for these charges in spite of repeated requests with sufficient evidence lodged of the costs incurred.

mother is an aged pensioner experiencing serious health issues who has received prompt, warm and sincere service from other financial institutions. Is First State Super capable of the same levels of customer service? March 7 2017 Update: Disingenuous In short, the answer to my previous question is no. First State Super has been the most arduous and insincere of all financial service providers that I have dealt with for my seriously unwell mother. They have failed to provide her even with even a minimum level of service that has been readily available from other institutions. Whilst my mother is poorer for her dealings with First State Super, we hope others may benefit from becoming aware of her experiences.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Serial Incompetence in Administration
My wife's employment is covered by a NSW Award which mandates that employer superannuation contributions are remitted to First State Super.
Between us we have experience of 7 superannuation funds. First State Super is outstanding as the most poorly administered fund of any we have had dealings with.
The most recent example of their total lack of customer service is as follows. My wife was admitted to private hospital for major surgery.. Serious complications resulted her being held in intensive care for 8 days. This has resulted in a blow o...Read more

Took 4 month to do what they are required by law to do in one week. No access to complaints, can't go past the so called supervisor, can't talk to administration and only threats to go to the ACCC and talk back radio gets them going.

Terrible service, disinterested staffs
I sent them a request to split my salary sacrifice with my wife in August. This was not done until October, I called and was told they received my request but has not processed it, they assured me this would be done immediately. And now in November it was still not done. I sent a complaint in their web site and never heard from them. I filled in a complaint form and sent to them and is still waiting for a response.

Disinterested staff. No attempt at etiquette. No attempt to resolve issues. Everything is an effort.
Cannot obtain paper copies of recent statements. Staff are always rude and wanting to pass the buck rather than resolve issues. Incompetent. Very unimpressive. Stay clear of this superannuation fund. There are always excuses for them not to respond to emails. Very few First State Superannuation seminars held in Victoria. They do not simply care.

Terrible service
I have just walked away from an appointment with a FSS "advisor",at penrith.
He had no interpersonal skills, spoke to me like I was wasting his time, and was belittling in his responses. No information was forthcoming unless I paid $2500, for a plan. I don't object to a fee for services, if I have an idea of what the plan/ options might encompass.
This information was not forthcoming.
Would you pay someone this money when you don't know what you will get for it?? He was brisk, rude and quite obnoxious, and I would never trust him to manage my life savings.

Hello, Hello Hello Hello ... Are you sure you are still there???
I have been attempting to cash in a very small amount of superannuation money earned when I returned back to work for a couple of years after retiring and cannot believe that has taken over two months and still counting. All communication attempts have been completely ignored. I did receive a call over a month ago stating that I hadn't completed the forms correctly (I actually had it turns out because I kept a copy) however I resent what they must have lost just to keep the ball rolling. From then on it seems that the staff have now disappeared...Read more
into a black hole with the forms... I have sent several emails ... silence. I tried the website ... silence. I tried signing into the online access, needed a password, requested the code ... silence. As mentioned my amount is small, but all dollars count and I am concerned that my meager amount will be even less due to the delay. Compared to the Super companies that my husband and I dealt with when cashing in after retirement I recommend all members out there with larger sums invested with State Super... get it out and find a more professional and efficient organization. Problem is, going by my experience, if you are in your mid thirty's and put in a transfer request today you might just get the monies by the time you retire... but then again there is no guarantee. Re the rating stars above... what a shame they don't go in to the minus. PS I'm a little concerned about providing my email... does this mean that I might end up waiting longer now that they can identify me.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

New so called systems upgrade
The new upgrade has been a disaster. The unit prices as shown on 30 August 2016 are dated 18 August 2016, 12 DAYS OLD. For a new system, it is disgusting and totally unacceptable considering the volatility of financial markets. And they ask for patience and understanding due to the new system implementation. How much time are we supposed to be "understanding"? I have a feeling the systems upgrade was done by the same mob that recently stuffed the Australian census.

hilst the rep checked on the matter, I was emphatically told that the unit prices were up to date. When I stated that the unit prices were not updated and I told her I was on the web page that showed that the most current unit prices as 18 August, she stated that I was right and that she would "escalate" matter. Apparently it is OK to lie to customers as long as it gets rid of the inquiry.1 comment

Nonsensical transfer rules
Tried to merge defined benefit fund with associated accumulation fund. Both funds have the same name, same TFN, same address, same DOB, in fact they send both statements in one envelope. Transfer was denied because the prove of identity document had a preceding preferred name, the rest of name is similar. Lost valuable time and money as was OS for lengthy holiday, transfer was timed to market condition. Cannot understand this pedantic and illogical non action. Can some body explain? Now considering rolling over to another fund given the mediocre performance over time.

Financial Service not worth the fees or angst
When it came time to move on to a transition to retirement I had a wonderful young man help. He has since resigned unhappy with the companies policies. I have had little to no help from a person assigned to me that I cant understand. I tried to get someone else to help but was pushed back to this assigned person. I have only received promotional emails and when I should have been given advice I was missed at a loss of over $3000 dollars paid in tax that should not have happened. Incompetent I would say yes, inept service I would say yes, terrible Website support once again yes. If I could work out how much I would lose by leaving them I would but also not easy. Maybe I should have made this no star rating.

New Website is terrible - no useful price charts
Just like someone else here, I also used the unit price charts to make decisions, and decide on super mixes. They have removed these. The new charts are no good. Obviously they are ignoring people who want there back. Very disappointing. I will move my super if these are not returned.

Made it almost impossible to retrieve my deceased mother's funds. Almost 8 months after her death they commanded we provide photo ID for her, which we did not have. Each time we satisfied their requirements they would come back with more. Genuine thieves. Disgusting and inconsiderate.

Is TAL the insurer for First State Super (as claimed by FSS) or are they just contracted to make recommendations to FSS’s Board of Trustees for life insurance claims, including terminal illness and total permanent disability (as claimed by TAL)??? Just want to know the legal/contractual relationship between TAL, FSS and myself.

Hi Brett
Thanks for your message.
First State Super’s death, total and permanent disablement and income protection insurance is offered to First State Super members under insurance policies issued to the trustee by TAL Life Limited ABN 70 050 109 450, AFSL 237848 (the insurer).
The insurance cover provided is subject to the terms and conditions contained in the insurance policies (policies) issued to the trustee by the insurer.
The insurance information provided in the Member Booklet and Member Booklet Supplement available on our website is based on the policies issued by the insurer, and information provided by the insurer about the operation of the policies.
The terms and conditions of the policies prevail over any inconsistent information in the Member Booklet (Product Disclosure Statement) and our Member Booklet Supplement.
Insurance benefits will only become payable if the insurer accepts the relevant claim. Payment of any approved claim will be made by the insurer to the trustee and any insured benefit and any account balance can only be paid to a member by the trustee when a condition of release under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993 (Cth) is met.
If you would like to discuss your insurance cover with us, feel free to call our service centre on 1300 650 873.
Kind Regards,
Beau
Ok. Your “insurer” denies being the “insurer” for terminal illness benefit. Instead they claimed to be there to make a “recommendation” which the trustees would then accept or reject. I may even have it in an email, but was definitely told this on the phone.
