Very useless unit.
The Hema HX1 is one of the most dangerous units to be using in an off road adventure. One of the main problems is that there is NO switch to actually turn the HX1 OFF. As soon as power is turned off from the vehicle, the HX1 will use the battery until it runs out. This means if you break down in a remote region for some reason, and are unable to charge the Hema, then you will be in trouble due to the fact that battery is running down and in a few hours it will not function. The HX1 also takes SEVERAL hours to recharge from being out of battery ...Read more
power. This problem will also cause the battery to shorten its usable service life. The screen states when power is turned off that "The unit is turning off", what it doesn't state is that the unit is still powered ON, so power is being used. I bought one late last year and will be getting rid of it and replace it with another GPS off road system. I also owned a Hema HN7 and it too was also a problem and the HX1 has all the same power serup problems, so it appears that Hema has not taken any notice of users complaints.Purchased in September 2021.

don't buy save your money
unit is not good, battery has swollen after 16 months and split casing. Wrote to Hema and was advised to send item back, could take about 6 weeks if it was found to be faulty or I would have to pay cost and to provide original receipt (travelling in caravan) what receipt. Unit wont turn off and changes from day light to night mode even during the day.. I have now bought 2 of these and will never go back.

Does not like the heat
I attached my navigator in the centre of the windscreen just above the dashboard. It worked well for some time however now when it gets hot, from the sun, something inside it expands forcing the back panel to split from the front. It still works but it is annoying as it does not sit in its cradle once this happens and I am sure that it will eventually fail

Few issues.
I purchased the HX-1 in 2016 and until 2022 it worked perfectly. Then there was an update, that changed the way the HX-1 worked. I believe that the update introduced a safety function with in the device, that turns the unit off if it decides it has got too hot. Yes the unit is large, yes the unit has a black back and yes I have it mounted on the windscreen, in full sun, so that I can see it.
Anyway, in Feb 2022 the unit decided to stop working and it appeared as if the back of the unit had swelled (battery). I sent it back to Hema for repai...Read more

Need wifi to do anything with it, try that in the middle of nowhere. Makes my 8 year old garmin with topo maps look like god! Need about 53 32g micro sd to be able to store maps to be practable. Bluetooth can't use phone for internet. But an ipad with a gps tracking. Overpriced piece of junk.

Rubbish ....
I bought the HX1 second hand and now know why the guy sold it. The Drive mode is Ok, just.
The Explore mode is terrible.
Complicated and hard to operate.
Maps don't show properly (missing sections and different scales on same pages).
Can't switch off while charging on my desk and in car.
Great Desert Tracks are shown but won't load???
Battery life is terrible.
Supply a dash mounting and then say shouldn't operate above 35 deg, is Hema Australian?

Keep your money do not bother
Waste of money. Only had the unit for half hour and already hate it. "explore maps" are useless totally NOT user friendly, GPS keeps falling off line. Even the 389 page user guide that you have to find and download is not helpful. Just buy a $30 paper map and use a cheap android or ipad with gps to get you there.

Do not buy this unit!
We have had 2 x HX1's and both have same issue of overheating. There is a major issue by the looks of all the forums stating the same issue. Do your homework thoroughly before buying this unit.

Complete crap
Did the High Country trip and when on explore mode map layers were mixing up (half a screen would be one resolution, other half the other resolution). Then it would just show blank white screen with grid lines.
Required numerous restarts. Was searching for GPS forever most of the time. Auto mode for day and night screen colours was not working etc etc
Sold it two weeks after at a $200 loss.
Went back to my faultless Garmin with topo maps and wikicamps when offroading.
Hema, thanks for nothing! Stick to what you do best - paper maps!

nothing but problems since bought
first problem straight out of the box, wouldn't charge. eventually after 5 days it started to except a charge.
second problem, showed problem showed intersections or turns after you passed them
third problem after 2 1/2 to 3 hours machine gets too hot and screen goes funny, let it cool down and some times it will come back on with normal screen, lately have had to do reboot and sometime it will fix it, there is something wrong with these machines, I would not recommend spending this amount of money on these machines, have had to revert to my Garmin as it is more reliable.

PRO’S & CON’S Product operational deficiency’s not initially apparent!
PRO’S
1 Excellent correlation of Hema paper charts with Hema HX1 data base greatly aids planning and big picture view.
2 Excellent, reliable GPS
CON’S
1 Inability to delete tracks or routes on the go. Can only be deleted when you are synced to your account. This makes using it remotely in the field annoying if trying to delete un-required noise. A major oversight.
2 Inability to adjust font size makes reading names on the go difficult and especially for anyone without perfect eyesight.
Overall this is a very useful tool supported by excellent reliable mapping but there is massive scope for improvement of the operator interface. It’s very disappointing in that regard.

What a horrific waste of money !!!!!!
Turns itself on, wont turn off, started going thru screen changes with no one touching it, making weird noises, I think the thing is possessed! When I needed it most and clicked on my home address it just drew a bright red line direct to my place.... great if I had a helicopter. I wish I read the reviews before purchase

Absolute Crap House
Where to start...
Glitchy, always freezing up
Touch screen is terrible and often doesn’t recognise touch
Boot up is slow
Regular updates that never seem to fix the problems
Save your money, just buy the map for your device, there is zero benefit to the HX1 over your phone

A good idea poorly executed
Zooming is woeful and there is no Apple MAC update software. They don't warn you BEFORE you pay for the upgrade. Reflective screen requires another AUD$45 for flimsy screen visor.

RUBBISH
We are up to unit (GPS) # 3. Finally this unit (GPS) will accept a charge from the cigarette lighter adaptor supplied. The GPS will 'crash' when in trees and won't even fix to a satellite in our carport. The satellite position fix is very slow and constantly loses a signal. When 'off the beaten track' the free app Mapme is generally better.
In summary the HEMA HX-1 is expensive rubbish.

Bin it
If I turn it off so it will charge faster, it turns itself back on with no provocation whatsoever.
There does not seem to be any way to edit a saved location once you have saved one.
The maps of large cities seem ok. Bought it for the maps of way out in the middle of nothing, which I doubt it will last long enough for us to try.

Hi can anyone help me with a battery swelling problem I’ve had my hx1 for years and I got it out of the draw today and the battery swelled up and split the the unit in half

I had the same problem with 2 of them never again will I recommend this unit
Similar problem, tried talking to the company, they wanted me to return it with original receipt which I no longer have. Still in negotiations but have also heard that they may replace it with a refurbished unit which has probably had similar fate. Believe this is an inherent problem with the unit as have seem many similar complaints, unfortunately not before I purchased the unit, Would and could not recommend

Does anyone know what the turn around time is when Hema recieves a returned HX-1 for a battery replacement after a swollen battery issue?
2 answers
No but I have the same issue so it must be an endemic problem which should have been rectified by now
Kel, you would think so. Hema received my unit over six weeks ago and still not a word from them, not a word. I think Hema send them back to China, their place of manufacture for repairs. You could get a engine rebuilt in less time than it takes them to replace a battery. Not happy!
