Rubbish Product Not Fit For Purpose.
Even though I read the mostly bad reviews, I decided to buy this unit as I do a lot of outback touring. Difficult to use, hopeless in Explore mode. Street GPS is OK. I have now had this unit for 15 Months and on a recent trip to Cape York the battery failed, leaving me without a navigator. Not good enough!

Average user interface, can't download maps
So just got a new Hema HX-1 with my supertourer from Patriot Campers, apart from not being able to download maps its just a gps. Got a message today that there is an update of all the maps, 4.5gb. Clicked download and it got to South Australia on the list and said "Your HDD is full, try deleting some videos or photos or previously downloaded maps" I just turned the thing on there are no photos or maps to delete. So i can't download the update.
Fail.
Seems OK
Bought the HX 1 after I couldn’t upgrade and get the UK map off my old Garmin
It took a bit to get used to with all the different screens but if you play with an iPad you shouldn’t have to much trouble
We have just returned from touring SA VIc and Tassie with no issues with the Hema until we got back to WA and pointed it towards home on the shortest route and it did try to take us on a scenic 300km further route
The Hema updated through the wifi on my phone when I told it to with no dramas
It does lose satilitte contact now again but regained them pretty quickly
Overall quite happy with it
Not worth the price tag
I brought the HX1 even though I’d read mostly bad reviews but thought the reviews sounded like they had come from grumpy old guys, that weren’t tech savvy, unfortunately for me it seems most of the reviews were pretty accurate.
The unit in general is difficult to navigate and not very user friendly switching screens to get around is a pain. screen size is good, and night and day mode works well although it takes a little while to get the correct time for WA as it seems to be set on Eastern states time. There is no clock function on the drive ...
Read morescreen (that I can find anyways) only when your in the home screen which seems pointless really. If Wifi is on the battery runs down quickly even when I’m driving. The unit doesn’t always turn off when the engine is switched off so on more than 1 occasion I’ve started the car in the morning and the GPS is completely flat. like many others no reverse camera input means another screen on the dash. The drive function and route selection is poor the maps are out of date regularly needs more updates to keep up with road changes. It doesn’t matter whether you select quickest, shortest or easiest route it still takes you the long way around. I was heading out to the central wheatbelt area I know well but had it running to see how it performed. If I’d followed the GPS I would still ge driving. The route it planned was 250klm longer and added 3 1/2 hrs even as I kept missing turns and heading forward it wanted me to backtrack. I can’t say much about the explore function because it doesn’t have enough info on WA to use. My old Garmin Nuvi with shonky topo was better at least the sand tracks I drive regularly are on that map. I’m starting to regret the purchase I’ll give it a little longer to trial but so far not that impressed.

Get the HN-7 before buying HX-1 unless you have in dash reversing camera
Lacks a rear view camera input and is not as easy to use as Garmin.
You have to purchase a range of maps to get any off road coverage which adds to the cost, difficult to input places and not very intuitive.
The fact that the older HN7 has a camera input and the HX-1 doesn't is not clearly articulated.
Get a HN-7 if you want HEMA unless you have in dash reversing camera.
Awsome
Had it for about 2 weeks after having a hn7 then using the explorer app. Chose this unit because I have about 3-4 years if routs, waypoinys and track logs. As far as I know it's the only service that allows a cloud sync meaning if I loose or if i upgrade my device I don't loose my 3-4 years of logs and wsypoints. I also like the ability to share tracklogs or waypoinys via email, whatsapp message ect. It took maybe 1 or 2 hours after logging in to my cloud account to upload over 500 waypoinys and tons of routs tracklogs and map sections I have...
Read more downloaded for Max zoomed off road use. Very quick considering the amount of data. I did run a little slow but being organised I have created region specific folders so I can use only one at a time eg. Vick high country, cape ect. As a result it doesn't have to load everything and runs quick as. I was surprised the during testing it was giving me speed camera warnings even in explorer mode. As far as the drive mode goes inside awesome. I was able to set up a multi point route for my cape trip and save it so on the morning of the trip I hit on button and I guides me step by step. Love that it tells me all the next rest stops and even gives me easy offline access to health accommodation and repair services with on button press. Seems that all the satyelite and battery problems have been sorted. I'm so glad I did not read all of the negative reviews. Ppl who say it's too complicated most be expecting everything handed to them. Just gotta use ur brain sometimes. It I know Joe to use a topo it's easy. And let's face it, the main reason Ppl should boys this is for the topos as there are hundreds of inroad navigators. Thought it was worth mentioning that as I was reading reviews it asks "was this helpfull" at the bottom and does not have a no option. Only a yes box. Minds bias I reckon.- 3 reviews

Good idea, poorly executed
I purchased this to use in the 4 x 4 in the main because of the very big screen.
That is about all it has going for it. It is easily the most frustrating piece of electronic equipment I have ever encountered. I have Extensive experience in both government and private use going back to the 90’s so whilst I am no expert I kind of think I can work these devices...except this one is so use unfriendly as to dfy logic.
Firstly it takes HOURS to charge up, about 3 or 4...really in this day and age....
The down loads for maps take an eternity, I am not just saying that...it is incedible.
The thing has to get wifi connected regularly or you cannot. Hange or do things

1st class ....RUBBISH!
I can only reinforce every negative comment posted about this expensive low grade product. Purchased at Melbourne's caravan and camping display, used (tried to use) on trip to northern NSW, it was almost thrown under the wheels of the semi. Following us as it became so hot and decided it would do many strange things not mentioned in the manual? It just beggars belief that a product can be sold to the public with such terrible issues as the Heaver HX-1?
How do I get a refund, as this product has cost me a large portion of my pension?
Never again
Terrible to use, runs hot and cuts out when mounted on the dash even with the aircon running. Now only seems to accept 4 or 5 percent charge. Sorry i spent the money on this piece of junk. Had issues from the start and I've hated it from that day forward.

Rubbish ... Hate it
Too complicated, difficult to update, don't like the screen layouts, difficult to read .. Not recommended ..
Try to update maps takes ages then I am unsure if it actually happened .. I am pretty tech savvy but this device has be bamboozled ... It needs all the power you can drag out of the cigarette lighter, if you have a multi USB plug it won't charge .. Used to have Oziexplorer for years and am going back to it, just use the navigation already installed on your phone or tablet and Ozi for off road ...
Smashed it to bits
Thing went all different colours tripping out!
Coming on then turning off!
Punched it a few times, ripped it out of its holder snapped it in half and chucked it out the window where it belongs! Piece of junk!
Don’t waste ya money like I did..
Do not buy one!
Buy a swag n few cartons of beer instead!

RUBBISH
Where do I start. Wont download program onto my pc, hell, the device won't even sync with my intel core i7 Samsung laptop so I cant download any maps. Wont charge on pc. Keeps losing wifi signal even though my phone and pc has signal. Cant use device if plugged into pc, just stays on usb page. Explore is very complicated to use. Drive keeps warning of speed cameras even in my driveway. Wont charge up in 4wd either. First time turned on battery was at 45%, now I'm on 36% with no hope of charging up. Taking it back for a refund. Not fit for purpose.

Seems ok
I recently upgraded to a HX-1 having used the Explorer app on my Samsung tablet for the last 4 years. While the unit worked well (seems from reading the past reviews HEMA have fixed up some of their issues) I was a little disappointed when in several instances it froze up (which is a pain in the butt when you're deep in the middle of nowhere) and other times when it warns you that the device is too hot (even though the outside temperature was only 27 degrees). To overcome this I had to use a tea towel and the HEMA pouch to stop the sun hitting ...
Read morethe device. HEMA should look into making the units white instead of black, or perhaps selling a reflective plastic white cover to prevent the unit from getting too hot. In saying that the maps were very accurate and the unit overall is pretty good.- 4 reviews

Took some getting used to - but happy with the result
I have owned the HX-1 for a week - at start up the steps were easy to follow - it took a couple of hours to download the updated applications and the maps via WiFi - it seems a little slow as I have ADSL2 - but it got there.
Driving around the city I have mostly used the 'Drive' app - and it has been quite acceptable - notifying me of speed camers etc. The cigarette power cord has kept the unit charged OK - no loss of battery. I find the navigation similar to my Garmin Nuvi - I like that when navigating a route you can mute the turn by turn ...
Read moreaudio yet keep the Speed Camera Alert audio. I also like that you can set the navigation to minimal notifications. At home on Wifi I have looked at the 'Explorer' app - used the Hema cloud to create waypoints and then did a sync to the unit via Wifi. Downloaded a detailed map of Lithgow and that apears to work when I turn Wifi Off - i.e. it should be available when I go off road. Time will tell how that works. Overall I am happy - just a learning curve to go through the settings - there are many options and perhaps the defaults don't suit me. Having spent the time looking at the manual (On Line PDF) I have learnt that the unit does some pretty good stuff - just not as intuitive as you would expect. Classic example is the sound volume (or mute) can be set in 3 places - so when you find the unit has no sound you have to check your settings. All Ok with me
Hi, I had initial problems getting started,
I refreshed my Hema account online with a new password.
Then made a Cloud account with the same name and password
This allowed me to connect immediately and download all maps took 1 hour.
It is doing everything well. My Hema 5 bounced around on a motorbike for years, this should be the same.
People who blame a personal GPS for nearly going through a red light need to alter their driving style.
Every contact with Hema over 10 years has been satisfactory.
To complicated and no customer service unless you wait on the phone for 30 minutes
Not user friendly....trying to Register won’t let me do an online registration and can’t find my current location. Keeps searching looking for GPS. Then wait 30 minutes on the phone only to be told your next in line 8 times. Totally would never recommend one. Two updates and it tells me to delete files to make space...arhhhh
Purchased today and it won’t operate
It won’t let me do an online registration and can’t find my current location. Keeps searching looking for GPS. Thank goodness for consumer protection law. It goes back tomorrow. Junk... After reading this forum I am now more determined than ever to get my money back. It’s a pity because on paper it looks great.
The Hemaroid!
Nothing but a pain in the rear! Biggest waste of 700 bucks ever. Downloading the maps is incredibly difficult, the thing overheats, turns itself off. The drive option is ok I guess, but I want to explore and this option is crap! If I didn't pay 700 bucks for it I would of thrown it out the window by now. Gave it one star because I had to, but its a zero from me.

GPS matches after sales service - LOUSY
I bought this unit on the strength of HEMA's reputation. I was badly mistaken. Awful glitchy software that seemed out of date and not intuitive to use at all. The screen resolution IS terrific but otherwise it's an expensive dud! Equally disgusting is the service from HEMA. Ring up and you'll be lucky to get through. So - go online and register your complaint by taking an "online ticket" - presumably they will get back to you but maybe not within the same decade that you registered. On a recent trip to Moreton Island the display went into rever...
Read morese AND upside down mode - totally unrecoverable. The best thing to happen to my wonderful HX-1 was when I accidentally dropped it recently and the screen smashed - at least the display is now the right way round and the right way up - if you can see it through the cracks. I will never deal with this company again.A waste of $600
A waste of money cable broke in the first week sent me around in circles in Sydney and the off road software is not easy to use. I am back to using the old Garmin Nuvi with tracks for Aus or ozi explorer no more Hemma rubbish for me, at $600 I expected a better product

NOT User Friendly for off road or TOPO Maps
Worse GPS I have owned, and I have owned quite a few. It is not user friendly and have to relayer the maps every time I power down, if it goes to sleep you do get the screen that you were on, BUT if it asleep to long and internal battery goes flat then start again, If I have the map on screen and the way points are not showing even though it is an active layer then when you access the the left hand screen slide and select waypoints then go back to the Map then you are shown a blank grid.
Way points do not show on maps whilst mobile, sometimes...

Heap of crap
this has been a headache since i purchased it, to delete maps i have to do a factory reset as it messages me and says it has stopped working. Maps take forever to download, you get bugger all space on the internal memory. Hema tell me they cant grant it access to the SD card for maps to be downloaded too, that is utter crap. I've gone on the Explore maps and roads that are on it are actually not there. while the theory is ok the use is not. Maps are way out dated and there is never an update. biggest waste of money i have spent, utter crap product. i want to rate this ZERO
Extremely Disappointed
Drive Navigation software is terrible & should be replaced,
Explore mode better but would prefer the old oziexplorer system instead of this slow layer system.
The fact you have to pre load maps or sections of maps is a pain. Why can't the unit store more maps off line or even the micro SD card. Don't get internet in lots of places.
Buttons on top menu Explore mode too small. Hard to select when driving
No where is the time shown when in navigation mode in Drive or Explore modes - this is annoying.
Navigation bar on bottom Explore mode way too small to read. Need a microscope:(
Overall this is an overpriced, overcomplicated mess. I was better off with my separate Oziexplorer GPS & Navman GPS.
Extremely Disappointed

POWER PROBLEMS
Since new unit become very hot, now will not hold a charge, will run when plugged in but not when disconnected. Have to have a good idea where you are going or you could end up in the front room of some ones house. Hema reckon 2-4 weeks to fix it. Not a good buy.

Hi-1 Useless complicated rubbish
The HX-1 is a complicated piece of garbage it does not have all the sites that the latest hard copy of camps 9 has and the battery goes flat even when the unit is switched off. It has trouble finding satellites and won't connect to its server. Absolute waste of money
