Avoid Honda Mowers At All Costs
I bought a Honda Mower thinking I was getting a top quality product that professionals used.
For a couple of years I have mowed my lawn, the catcher rarely has grass in it as the chute clogs and the mower just spays cut grass all over the lawn.
Extremely angry that I have paid double what other mowers cost to buy something has a major fault in design, I didn't know this until I read reviews that others have left to say they too were having the same issues.
Avoid buying when mowers half the price would do a better job.
The one good feature o...Read more

Preformed better than expected
Mulching is amazing and cuts like a dream Whisper quite with punch. Compared to my old mower this makes me moist. I will have intimate dreams of this mower tonight. I'm going to file for divorce and marry my lawn mower. My heart lies deep with this one. XOXO gossip gorl
Update!! Height adjustment is flimsy and hard to manage. Poor design and enginge cut off is a pain i use a sttap to keep engine running. Other than that. Good machine

narrow shute
I hate the narrow chute and bag catcher...cloggs up all the time and PVC catcher is mutch better...the older buffalo 196 were a magnificent machine with the wide chute and PVC catcher..never buying a narrow chute mower again ever...go back to the old style mower...a lot of mowing contractors agree with me..

Terrible.
Won't get that time back
What a waste I had to sell it for half the price
It might be an ok mower in the desert but I would highly advice not to purchase any Honda with the back shoot half closed up.why they still building that way.
It gets blocked even if the grass is the slightest bit moist.so you have to mulch but that still stalls
The mower after 15 steps.
It is well built great handles good wheels it just is no good for Sydney conditions
Very heavy

Great mower. Small chute gap is OKAY because...
I have been using this model for a year now and I have figured how to mow my lawn and get the clipping into the chute properly. Basically at each end of the lawn strip, you have to let go of the blade lever so it's just the engine running. Then after you turn your mower around, push the lever for the blade to start spinning again, the the blades will create an airflow to the back of the chute. You can see the chute puffing up! Do this as you go up and down the lawn and the bag will fill up quickly. Please note when i purchase the mower, it came...Read more
with two blades, i purchased another set so i have 4 blades. The engine is great, i have been using 91 unleaded fuel. It is so easy to start with just 1 pull. There is a hose plug where you plug in your garden hose to clean the mower's blades and underside. The only issue i have with this mower is that it is quite heavy compared to many other mowers. I highly recommend you feel one in person before making this purchase as i do not recommend this for the elderly or anyone who are not physically fit/strong.Similar opinion? Very disappointing lawnmower for the cost
I wish I had done some research before buying this lawnmower. Where do I start.
1. I bought it because it was "commerical grade" thinking that would mean high quality. The engine seems underpowered to me but that is the least of it's problems. I cannot see how someone could use this mower if they had a mowing business.
2. The chute is too small. Way too small. It is also very poorly designed. I can see Honda have said there is no issue with it... but believe me there is. As an Engineer myself I can see straight that the design is e...Read more

Honda know there's a problem with the small chute that is why they bought out a conversion kit for it I sold Honda mowers for many years and have spoken to the Honda rep and he informed me there was a kit made for this mower regarding this problem engine great design shocking

The best mower I have ever used
I've had one of these mowers for 6+ years and it's never let me down. I have a large lawn (500 sqm) with thick buffalo grass. This mower just powers through it - never stalls. I'm sure I'll still be using it many years from now (or maybe my son will!).

HRU196M1 Heritage
I had Masport lawn mower with a Honda Motor for over 10 years and decided to replace the mower and give the old mower to my son. Long story short we bought a new Honda Heritage lawn mower $1,100. The salesman (Rising Sun Honda in Townsville) said it will run better if you use 95 unleaded which we went and bought.
Got the mower home, followed the manual for starting and doesn't even want to give an indication that it wants to start. "Easy start" it said, I think not. I've read the manual to find out the 4 year warranty isn't worth the paper it'...Read more

Two years on what do I think?
My original comments remain extant. However, since buying a new house on a hill I've also discovered just how heavy the mow is to push on slight gradients.
Four years on. Worst mower ever. Sorry Honda you will not get anymore business from me.

Design flaws
I replaced my 18 year old Victa with a Honda HRU196M1. At the time I thought I was buying a Honda product that was well designed. It seems that some kind of engineering focus group with no lawn mowing experience thought they new better and introduced some very ingenious design features.
1. It's very heavy
2. The starter cord is located on the handle bar and gets caught on every low bush. It also wears the cord out early
3. The throttle handle has no guard and gets caught on every low bush, turning the mower off.
4. The design of the mulchi...Read more

im getting frustrated using my mower
My mower is just over a year old, so relatively new. It constantly stops while i mow, this started a few months ago. I called the shop where i bought it, told them what happened. They told me to bring it in, i cannot as its too heavy. They told me it might be water in the fuel, so i removed all the fuel, bought new fuel from a different station, i changed the fuel a couple of times but same thing happens and still happening. Its so frustrating my old victa was so reliable but it fell apart, oh! How i miss it. I bought the Honda as i thought i was buying quality, but i feel ripped off. Did i buy a lemon? Does anybody else have this problem?

Over engineered quality mower just not executed correctly
I am a contracter and have been for 10 years.. Always used victa and masport, tried an old Honda once and it failed with low power & extremely heavy.. so after a long time thought I would try the range with blade brake, my knees where hurting at the end of the first day.. Still way too heavy.. First job clutch on the blade brake started to slip.. I was shocked.. 2 inch high grass made this mower fail.. Couldn't believe it..
I ended up removing 2 blades to reduce resistance in thick grass and it cut better but wouldn't mulch or catch very we...Read more

So light and yet heaps of power.. The Honda couldn't keep up with me and now I can't keep up with the Masport.. So happy and feel like a real man again.. Honda I live by a rule.. "Keep it simple stupid" you should too. Your engines and build quality are incredible!! The rest is disappointing..1 comment

Great
I wanted to get a new mower and having other Honda equipment, wanted to get a Honda mower mainly for the ease of starting. After reading reviews, I was hesitant to get a Honda. I rang Honda and questioned them on the reviews and they gave me answers to all the questions I asked. I ended up buying a mower from the local Honda dealer and so far have been extremely satisfied with it. We had a huge down pour the day prior to mowing the lawn, and using a sensible height setting had no issues with grass clippings clogging up the discharge shute. So far so good, would recommend speaking to Honda or your dealer prior to purchasing if you have any questions.

Still crap!
Had another fun day with this $1000 piece of crap yesterday.......and yes Honda lady the grass was dry........not short though (the reason I was cutting it) but still had to manually clear the pissant little chute by hand no less than 4 times. Not bad for 160 sqm of lawn.

Can't stand using my lawn mower
This mower is truly terrible. At the very slightest hint of moisture in the lawn, it simply blocks up and you need to stop mowing and clear the blockage. This gives you another 5 seconds of mowing before it happens again.
The little amount of cut lawn that does make it into the bag simply falls out onto the ground once the bag is separated from the mower because of the bag design.
I have seen the responses on other reviews from Honda celebrating the introduction of the Heritage mower that apparently doesn't have these faults. The only pro...Read more
blem is that Honda customers have already spent a lot of money to purchase our current lawn mowers which really don't work very well, so what are we supposed to do with the mowers that we have already bought? Saying that the solution is now spend a 2nd bucket of money to buy another Honda product when the first product doesn't work is disingenuous. If Honda cared about it's customers it would initiate a recall and do a voluntary swap for the Heritage if it indeed doesn't have these faults. Currently the worst product I own and I regret buying it.1 comment

Reliable engine, Solid body -chute gets blocked sometimes
On looking at mowers I first saw a Honda advertised for 599 or 699. I thought wow a Honda thats not too expensive. However I discovered the GC engines on the cheaper Hondas have a plastic cam shaft! (look it up on Youtube) Yep you get what you pay for in this instance. I had 2 Honda powered generators, both powered by GX engines and never missed a beat. So upon learning about the plastic inside the GC engines I chose this one because its got the old school GX engine in the Long Rang version. My lawn was 2 feet high in some parts when it arrived...Read more
, Got it tidied up on less than 1 tank and its a 900m block. After reading all the horrendous reviews on this site of the major brands and my own experience with them I researched the Hondas. Glad I found out about the GX engines. Got mine for $1159 and some free oil and most importantly which oil to use. And they are assembled in Australia! Ok Thought of a few bad points - When mowing without the catcher on it does block up from the chute sometimes. This is because the exit Chute for the grass is only half or less the size of the back of the mower - yes I know! Well I read this is because they use the same chassis for the one that is self propelled and has a gearbox. So there is this space thats blocked off. The catcher guard at the back is also made of plastic. In the old days that would have been steel. Anyway, still glad I got it, starts first go and if I'm mowing without the catcher I just lift the mower up a bit on its back wheels an it drops the grass. Sometimes I have to unclog it by hand. Having the blade disengaged via the blade break is reassuring here. My mum had a Victa that only lasted 12 months then would not start. Took to mower shop got fixed (Carby), then only lasted a month. I then tried to fix it but couldn't get it started. So I didn't want a repeat of that. Thats why I chose the Honda. I know, not perfect but where can you buy the perfect old school mower, with a decent engine ? Sounds like a business opportunity! Good Luck with finding whats right for you. December 22nd 2016 Update: Constipated mower i.e. full of crap (Chute gets blocked ALL the time) I'm writing this because my previous review can't be edited. Almost cut my hand off unclogging the thing. (Yes it is possible even with the clutch). It will drive you mad if it doesn't cut your hand off.2 comments

My review is of the Honda HRU196 L/R (Long Range)
I bought this mower like many others, as a commercial grade unit for my lawn and garden maintenance business from Lake Outdoor Power Equipment, who, I might add, were good and thorough with the sale.

waste of money
Im a commercial lawn mower. The shoot is just to narrow, I have the newer model with a "slightly" wider opening and a silly metal lip on the catcher- gets in the way when u try to empty into bags. The new mulcher plug that is available is terrible to put in properly and very hard to remove.
It sounds like the older version were a great unit and the R & D guys screwed the mower. However i do like the blade brake even if i had to cable tie the yellow button down on the top of the handle. (that button is a silly idea)

I have recently purchased a HRU196M1 (blade brake)mulch & cut mower it has the standard 2 blades and blade plate with multiple holes in it, i would like to put 4 blades on it .Do i have to replace the plate & blades(4 set) or just the blades & will the motor handle it in its standard tune.?thanks in advance.

I bought a Honda HRU-196-M1 Blade Break Mulching Contractor's mower. I am a woman and it is heavy.
But it is the starter cord that has become very tight, so much so, that I'm scared to pull it with any more force in case it does some damage. The clogging up of the chute doesn't bother me much as I'm not mowing for a living, but I am worried about this starter cord.
What could be causing is to become so tight?
1 answer
Hi Spondoola,
The only time that I have seen this is when the blade brake hasn't been disengaged. Check that when you are pushing the level in that it is actually pulling the cable on the left hand of the mower.
