Hurricane Skimmer 128 Kayak Review 8 June 2013
What Hurricane says: “After two years research and development Hurricane is proud to introduce a cutting-edge sit on top series designed by renowned yacht architect Ward Setzer. Like the graceful waterfowl for which they are named the Skimmer 128 is a distinctive kayak with an exquisite balance of performance and beauty that make it a pleasure to behold both on and off the water.”
What I say: That’s pretty flowery language for a fishing kayak, but I have to say this latest piece of plastic from Hurricane certainly lives up to those claims. I...Read more
t ticked all my boxes. Not only is it a serious high performance machine, but it is one of the most beautiful kayaks I’ve ever laid eyes on, especially in the limited edition silver of my test yak. Construction: Like all of Hurricanes products the Skimmer is thermoformed from a special plastic called Trylon. It’s thinner, tougher, and lighter than traditional roto-moulded plastic, and has a gloss finish that looks for all the world like fibreglass. Design: Hurricane gave Setzer a brief to start afresh with the Skimmer, and the first thing they came up with was a much more efficient touring style hull. For a relatively short craft it’s surprisingly fast, due to that clean smooth hull and relatively flattish bottom, which significantly reduces drag and turbulence. It is without doubt one of the quietest yak I have ever paddled, and as it draws very little draft it would be perfect for flats fishing. Surprisingly even without the rudder it tracks straight and true, due no doubt to the rather prominent skeg like keel at the aft end. Deploy the rudder however and it really shows its pedigree. This new Smart Track Rudder System with its clever foil shaped blade is a revelation. Unlike most rudders which are stamped from flat aluminium bar stock in a random shape someone thinks is aesthetic, the foil produces more turning forces without stalling out or slowing the kayak. It needs just a few degrees of angle to produce a much easier turn than a standard rudder system; so good in fact the Skimmer turns in its own length. Now that’s impressive.1 comment

I currently have a Hurricane Phoenix 14 that I bought new in 2005 and its rigged for fishing. Although not exactly long in the tooth yet, I was thinking of replacing it with a Skimmer 128. Is there room behind the seat for two flush mounted rod holders?

I agree with this reviewer (Occy). I purchased the Skimmer 128 as my first kayak and it handles superbly. Although I am not tall I am able to throw it on the Roof racks of the 4X without too much effo... Read more
rt. It is light and streamline, well balanced and unlike a lot of Fishing Kayaks easy to paddle. There is enough room in the boot to take my 6 year old for the occasional fun paddle or fit my fishing crate with ease. The only drawback I found is there is only a small (150mm) hatch within handy reach for storage and not as much space available mid ships for fishing gear, bait containers etc which I overcome by only carrying a small esky with only with bait, hooks etc inside. The addition of Paddle and pump bungee holders also helps. However the skimmer's light weight, ease of handling both in and out of the water and the speed to get where you want to go with a minimum of effort makes this a fantastic fishing or general recreational Kayak. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
